The show tells the story of the team as they work various cases and tackle their personal struggles.

SWAT is trained and equipped to resolve situations regular police units cannot, such as standoffs, crisis negotiation, hostage-takings, robberies, active shooters, assassinations, bomb threats, organized crime, and terrorism.

The show is a direct parody of the reality show Cops, which follows actual police officers through their daily duties, such as chasing criminals, and intervening in domestic disputes. The show deals heavily in politically incorrect and racy humor.

5. White Collar
Neal Caffrey, a renowned con artist, forger, and thief, is captured after a three-year game of cat and mouse with the FBI, specifically Special Agent Peter Burke, the head agent of the FBI’s White Collar Crimes Unit at the FBI's New York City field office.

6. Bones

In addition to the prospective murder cases featured in each episode, the series explores the backgrounds and relationships of its characters, particularly the romantic tension between Brennan and Booth

7. Rizzoli and Isles

Based on the series of Rizzoli & Isles novels by Tess Gerritsen, the plot follows Boston Homicide police detective Jane Rizzoli and Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Maura Isles combining their experiences and strikingly different personalities to solve cases. Rozzoli's family life plays a lot in the show.

8. Brooklyn Nine Nine
Set in the fictional 99th Precinct of the New York City Police Department in Brooklyn, Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows a team of detectives headed by the serious and intellectual Captain Raymond Holt, who is assigned as their new commanding officer in the pilot episode. The station's exterior is based on Brooklyn's 78th Precinct.

9. Southland
Southland takes a "raw and authentic look" at the lives of the LAPD officers who police L.A. The show's first season is more a character-driven drama than a police procedural. Among the characters are rookie Officer Ben Sherman and his training officer, John Cooper who, unknown to most of his colleagues, is gay; Detective Lydia Adams, who must balance work with the responsibility of living with her mother; Officer Chickie Brown, who aspires to be the first woman on the LAPD's elite SWAT team; and Detective Sammy Bryant, whose home life interferes with his working life.

11. The Shield
The series follows the activities of an experimental division of the Los Angeles Police Department set up in the fictional Farmington district ("the Farm") of Los Angeles, a district rife with gang-related violence, drug trafficking, and prostitution. At the center of the division is the Strike Team, and the Strike Team use criminal methods to coerce information and stage arrests and take a share of various drug busts.

12, Law & Order
Set and filmed in New York City, the series follows a two-part approach: the first half-hour is the investigation of a crime (usually murder) and apprehension of a suspect by New York City Police Department homicide detectives, the second half is the prosecution of the defendant by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. Plots are often based on real cases that recently made headlines, although the motivation for the crime and the perpetrator may be much different.

The series follows the Reagans, a family who has a history of work in law enforcement. Frank's eldest son, Danny, is an NYPD detective, his youngest son, Jamie, is an NYPD sergeant, and his daughter, Erin, works as an assistant district attorney. Frank's father, Henry, is a former NYPD beat cop who rose through the ranks to become police commissioner. The Reagans are an Irish American Catholic family that gathers for Sunday dinner each week. According to People, "the Sunday supper is the heart of each show.

A spin-off of Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. focuses on the fictional 21st District, which houses patrol officers and the department's elite Intelligence Unit, led by Detective Sergeant Hank Voight.

17. Miami Vice
The series follows Sonny Crockett and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, two Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami. Unlike standard police procedurals, the show drew heavily upon 1980s New Wave culture and is noted for its integration of contemporary pop and rock music and stylish or stylized visuals.

18. Starsky and Hutch
The series' protagonists were two Southern California police detectives: Sergeant David Michael Starsky and Sergeant Kenneth Richard "Hutch" Hutchinson. Hutch is the divorced, blond, Duluth, Minnesota, native with a more reserved and intellectual approach. Under the radio call sign "Zebra Three", they were known for usually tearing around the streets of fictional Bay City, California.

The show is centered on Sergeant Cordell Walker, a Dallas–Fort Worth–based member of the Texas Rangers, a state-level bureau of investigation. Both Cordell and Uncle Ray share the values characteristic of Wild West sheriffs.

The series is set in the New York City Police Department's Eleventh Precinct.
