Alice Oseman is an author/illustrator and was born in 1994 in Kent, England. She has written four YA contemporary novels about teenage disasters: SOLITAIRE, RADIO SILENCE, I WAS BORN FOR THIS, and upcoming LOVELESS. She is also the creator of LGBTQ+ YA romance webcomic HEARTSTOPPER, which is now published in physical form by Hachette Children's Books.

Alice’s first novel SOLITAIRE was published when she was nineteen. Her YA novels have been nominated for the YA Book Prize, the Inky Awards, and the Goodreads Choice Award, and HEARTSTOPPER has been optioned for TV. She can usually be found staring aimlessly at computer screens, questioning the meaninglessness of existence, or doing anything and everything to avoid getting an office job.

Finish it because you want to read the whole thing and hold the book in your hands. As I was writing Solitaire I had no plans to get it published - instead I was convinced that I would write it and then get it made into a book using Blurb or a similar book printing website, just so I could hold the thing in my hands and flick through the pages and read the words that I had turned into a whole book. Just love what you're doing and don't feel you have to rush it. You don't have a deadline, after all!(less)

I was able to do most of my coursework and homework during school hours and I also just didn't do a lot of homework (if they weren't going to check it, I didn't do it!), which left me lots of time to do the things I actually enjoyed at home.
Writing brought me such joy and peace that I genuinely loved doing it and looked forward to it every single day. I didn't feel any pressure to write something amazing or write something that loads of people were going to read, like I feel now. I wasn't involved in any online writing communities - I wasn't even on Twitter - meaning I didn't ever compare myself to other writers. It just made me happy, so I did it!(less)
