I think the whole point of the ending, and the story, is that we never truly understand who Amber is as a person. I do believe that Claire was off her rocker and genuinely would blackmail Amber out of "love" in order to keep her in her life. I also believe Amber was truly a victim overall. She did bad things, most of which were put in motion by Claire, but was mostly at the mercy of her frail mind due to what Claire did as a child, and eventually her coma and what Edward did to her. I believe the "Taylor told me to do it" was the beginning of Claire's blackmail. If anyone ever found those journals, all fingers would point to Amber from just that one line, despite all other entries suggesting that Claire was fully responsible. It snowballed from there.
As for the ending...I think there are two possibilities. One -- it's Edward, somehow having acquired the bracelet and knowing good and well how it would frazzle Amber. Two -- Claire is still alive. We don't really know what happened to Claire. Last we hear of her is Amber noting that she is still breathing and her eyes are open. We never hear about the bodies, though Madeleine being charged for murder suggests at least one body was found. It's possible that only David died and it was assumed Claire did as well, though maybe she was able to leave enough of herself behind (DNA, clothing) to suggest she did in fact die. So why not claim her children? Because Amber is in control now. She's shown what she is capable of and now Claire is having to get creative. So she leaves the bracelet that she is still there, but distanced.
They're two sides of the same coin now. Two peas in a pod. Both capable of being the victim and villain.
"People think that good and bad are opposites, but they're wrong. They're just a mirror image of one another in broken glass."

I'm just really relieved that I'm not the only person struggling with this - not sure its a good thing if you have to spend half hour googling an explanation and not being able to find one!

i decided i would not acknowledge that last sentence of the story, because it doesn't make any sense. I was warned prior to reading that I would be utterly confused by the ending. And, like many of you, I was. I guess it's up for individual interpretation. Amber is the innocent and Claire is the bad guy. Claire is the innocent and Amber is bad. The twins murdered everybody and this is their story. Nobody was ever in a coma, fire, TV show, radio show. The bracelet never existed. Claire/Amber/Taylor/The Mailman/The Dog, all made it up. Actually they all lived in Fiji and made cookies for a living. Like seriously????? This book was so dumb!

I think what the author is trying to say with the bracelet...is that you can plan the perfect life and try to escape from your past but you can't. It is part of you and you cannot get rid of it no matter how hard you try. It will always be there haunting you.

Feeling the same - not only about the ending. The twists and turns in the middle of the book (who is who, and who did what to who) also left me a little confused at times. Annoying.

Keep in mind the clues that "Amber made me do it" and the phrase "I lie" leads the reader to a plethora of possibilities at the end, which is deliciously devious! Are they alive or is Amber a much more dangerous woman than you think?

I am just glad to know I am not the only one who doesn't quite get this. I love this type of book, it's sort of my thing, but either I just am a total space cadet, or there was too much nothing. Or something. To be honest, I read it twice, thinking I just wasn't paying enough attention. I think now that it was too hyped and I was looking for something larger than what was there.

At the end Claire told Amber that Amber said their was a child in the middle of the road in the pink night dress so Claire swerved and hit a tree. Her mother had bought her a new bed dress that was pink to wear in the house of Claire’s since it was always cold. The little girl is in all of Ambers dreams/realities while she’s in a coma. Amber says the little girl is me. Both Claire and Amber sing nursery rhymes when they’re upset. Claire in the diaries and Amber in her office. Claire is skinny so she didn’t eat as much food that was poisened by Amber, when Claire heard the tape of her kids crying upstairs I imagine she (as a mother) got up enough adrenaline to go up and look for her children. Claire did take the bracelet. Amber says she sheds her skin off and now loves who she is seeing in the mirror. Paul is smart but loves Amber. If Claire had found the diaries at Ambers House after the crash she would’ve destroyed them before Amber did at the end. I’m still confused as to if “my sister died in a terrible accident” was “Claire’s mother” having a miscarriage after she fell down the stairs. Jo was given to Claire by Taylor (Amber). Also, the diaries never ever say the name of the author. Your only told the name Ambers parents gave her. Which was Claire. Both of the women loved the color red. Amber only drank red wine. Claire liked dry white wine. I’m confused but it’s an amazing book. I’ve read it 3 times in 2 days.

I just finished this book - loved it - however, I am totally confused. My guess is multiple personalities. She is Claire, she is Amber, I am not sure if while she is Claire she mails the bracelet to herself and when she is Amber, she receives it. Awaiting the sequel.

Wow!! I know I am late reading this book but, I loved every minute of it.
Two things I have found:
1.In the hospital Amber says when she stopped for the little girl in the pink dress she was not there. "you either imagined her or she ran away" Amber says "Both" she must be crazy.. split personality or delusional.
2.Amber said she "longs for the silence to return" ... "I get my wish. The door closes and I am left alone. The bracelet is gone and so is my sister" Claire was the last one with the bracelet.
It is also clear that Claire put Amber up to taking Madeline down. She planned everything long in advance. She bought the petrol on Madelines card and stored it at her house. That was before the accident wasn't it? This leads me to wonder if the "anniversary" Paul refers to is when they started this plan to get rid of Claire and take her kids. Was Paul in on it all. or just something to throw us off. It is possible that the bracelet was not even really there.
Another observation- She says three things you need to know... everything is 3... checking on things, the squeezes of the hand. There is a game 2 truths and a lie. Could these be that? The lie is my husband doesn't love me anymore and in the last entry the lie is my sister died in a tragic accident. flip of that is the lie is sometimes i lie... maybe she does not ever lie anymore. ?? lots of questions from just those last few words and that darn bracelet.

I think the twist at the ending are in the three things that Amber Taylor Reynolds writes on the last page: 1. I was in a coma. Two. My sister died in a tragic accident. Three sometimes I lie.
If you compare that to the very beginning of the book, there are three things that she says there: One. I’m in a coma. Two. My husband doesn’t love me anymore. Three. Sometimes I lie. We find out that it’s the middle one, “my husband doesn’t love me anymore,” that is not true, so if you follow the same sequence at the end of the book, what isn’t true is that her sister, Claire, died in a tragic accident. it’s a twist that’s hard to imagine how it could have actually happened, but it seems like maybe Claire isn’t actually dead. We are left wondering whether the author of those words believed them to be true at the time she thought them, or if she is consciously lying!

I approached it like a detective. there are two key pieces of info: who could know the meaning of the bracelet and who could actually have it.
for the first there are the 'sisters', the husband (if he read more then he claimed) or the ex (if he isn't dead).
for the second the list is the same give or take.
I played with the idea that the narrator was actually the other sister who assumed the identity of the other but that doesn't work (twin calling her mom for the first time). then I pondered the husband but that doesn't track either (why would he be there). or the ex. this does track, he was in the house and could have read the diaries before she showed up, as a hospital person he could have access to the room. he wouldn't know everything but he knows a lot. has to be him. it felt like a cheap ending since it was suggested strongly one of the sisters killed him using the tanning bed. but I am convinced it is the only one remotely plausible.

After reading a number of comments and doing some more thinking about the book, I'm liking the idea that Amber "subsumes" Claire at the end, splitting herself into two personalities. In killing Claire, Amber attempts to free herself from Claire's influence, but not surprisingly this does not work. They are "two peas in a pod," reflections of each other, "twins," and one cannot exist without the other (just like good cannot exist without bad in the world of dualities). Ultimately, Amber killing Claire is like killing herself. Therefore, Amber takes Claire on, leaving the bracelet for herself. I'm also reading "my sister died in a tragic accident" as Amber dissociating from her murderous act. Her hate drove her to kill Claire, but her "love" cannot accept this treason. This illustrates the ways in which Amber is caught between another duality that cannot be resolved, except through splitting and denial.

)Yeah.. I don't get the 'twist' that everyone seems to be referring to... Is Claire really alive? If so, I'd hardly call that a twist. That's just your average thriller where the villain isn't really dead. I thought it would be something a lot more interesting. Would anyone care to explain?

I assume the sister, Claire, survived the fire and assumed the identity of Amber/Taylor. I was very disappointed with the book as a whole. It was confusing, not very original and somewhat predictable as it went on.

I read through most of the replies on here and realize I've already spent too much time trying to figure out this book! I didn't see anyone theorize about whether or not the bracelet is actually there at the end. The inscription changed, which would be quite a feat... perhaps this is just another thing that Amber is lying about?

Obvious questions: police are looking for Edward for hospital room rape. He disappeared only to return to his place and tan? Not plausible. Police are looking for him and would keep his place under surveillance, Why would detectives say tanning bed was an accident?Claire is extremely thorough in her wickedness and murders! She would have seen Edward’s demise through! Therefore, bad and illogical ending.
Emily
I don’t believe that the line “Taylor made me do it” in the last diary entry is the “big twist” because it was Claire’s love for Taylor (Amber) and her need to belong to a family that drove Claire to set her childhood home (and parents) alight.
The list at the beginning of the book:
1. I’m in a coma
2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore
3. Sometimes I lie
follows the trend of two truths and one lie as we know that Amber was definitely in a coma and was an unreliable narrator and pathological liar (so was Claire) but we find out her husband does still love her. So we can assume the final list:
1. I was in a coma
2. My sister died in a tragic accident
3. Sometimes I lot
follows the same pattern. We know one and three to be a true. But for number two to be a lie Claire doesn’t have to be alive… Amber killed Claire (and David) so her death can’t really be considered a “tragic accident”.
I think the only outstanding question is that of the bracelet, who left it or whether it was even there to begin with. I don’t believe that Claire is alive there is absolutely nothing that points to this theory nor would it add to the book in any way. I don’t belted Paul is responsible although I don’t doubt that he read the diaries (who could help themselves when it was the source of so much tension between the “sisters”) and knows everything that has happened in the past. However, he wouldn’t gain anything from planting the bracelet so it seems unreasonable to assume it was him. I also have no idea what this anniversary he refers to is? I don’t believe Edward left the bracelet and I think if he were alive Amber would still be living in fear so we can assume he died in the “suntanning accident”. However, I am a little confused by his inclusion in the book, I didn’t feel that he added anything extra to the book. His abuse of Amber contributed little to the ending of the book and if anything blurred the lines of a few other plot lines however this may have been Alice Feeney’s intention. Based upon Ambers consistently loss of time and tendency to disproportionate minor details I think the most likely explanation for the bracelet is that it was never there at all, what Amber saw was simply the gold foil from the champagne bottle that her mind conjured into a relic of her past because no matter how hard she tries she will never be able to out run her past.
All in all I loved the book and all its twists and turns. Would definitely recommend!

The fact that it ended with Amber saying, "Sometimes I lie," means it literally could be anything. What did she lie about? Herself? Claire? Madeline? Edward? Paul? If any one of those pieces of the puzzle are false, everything changes. And the best endings are the ones that keep you thinking and talking about it, whether you're happy about doing it or not.

I found Paul to be rather untrustworthy throughout the novel… as well as Amber/Taylor. At times I thought Paul & Edward were either the same person (split personality or a twisted game between him and Amber/Taylor) or Edward was entirely made up like Jo was. Edward seemed sudden and extreme and surreal (more of a caricature of an abusive stalker than an actual return-ex of hers). I lean towards her imagining him coming into (or back into) her life as a means of her coping with the idea of her husband and Claire having an affair. She lied about her fictitious friend Jo being a real coworker at a job and position (never a cohost always a PA) that she also lied about (to us as readers and perhaps also Paul?). If she went out for drinks and conversed with Imaginary Jo in public settings… couldn’t she have also done this with “Edward”? She was likely dramatizing her life. She admitted to fabricating part of her “Then” storyline (Jo & her position) which makes her incredibly unreliable for anything & everything. I think she wrote the diaries… and is a liar. I also have a hard time believing Madeleine was Claire’s Aunt… why would she or anyone live in an inherited house that was supposedly set fire to by Claire to kill those parents? Those parents being Amber/Taylor’s in my mind… I think Claire was real and we were deceived into thinking she was controlling rather than protective of Amber/Taylor. I do think her and Paul were likely having an affair… and as for the bracelet, I do not think there is an evil Claire still alive stalking her. Or that Edward was ever real. I am most suspicious of Amber (losing time in her timelines… long shower when Paul said short… countless revealed lies/alternate realities/murders…). Maybe she imagined the bracelet? Or thought the shiny champagne wrapping was the bracelet? Paul was acting super sketchy in the final scene too which is throwing me off the most (or else she was acting paranoid and dramatizing everything). I am still pondering Paul’s role in this novel…
aymcb
I kept reading in the comments about the twist, “Taylor made me do it” and when the child called her “mom”. I think all the characters are only in her head, she is both Amber and Claire, married to David with two kids. Paul is her imagination for a better husband. And Madeline is the real God mother. She plot revenge on her because she abandoned her, killed her husband and point it to Madeline. Sent the bracelet to herself and continue to live with her imaginary husband Paul.
Adina
I think Katie who calls her "mommy" put the bracelet there and she is the next psycho that inherited the traits. She knows about Amber killing her parents and she will revenge.

I was confused most of the book. I do not plan on rereading it because it is so weird. I was interested in reading the entire book, but it became so disjointed and difficult to follow that I was glad when it was over. I, also, was very confused by the ending. Were they both psychos? Who was doing all the stuff to Madeline? That was just insane - that relationship. I was not crazy about the book - will not plan on reading the sequel. I like books that I can figure out who is who and what is happening. The names got all mixed up and who was talking and who was writing in the diary. I thought I had missed something until I read all the entries here.

I think when one of the twins says ‘mommy’ they actually see Claire, and is calling out to her? Claire is there after she delivered the bracelet and is watching for Amber’s reaction. I seem to agree with all the sentiments below that the two truths/ one lie is that Claire didn’t die.
Cathy
At the end, I thought...maybe Amber is a split personality with Claire and Taylor, and that she (Amber) had arranged to have the bracelet delivered to the beach..But Claire had a husband and children. Taylor had parent's that took Amber in...it really is mind boggling because Madeline turned out to be an aunt? Edward died accidentally, and Claire and her husband died in the fire Amber set..I enjoyed the book, but I'm still confused...Kind of like watching a movie and you don't understand the ending. What I do know is that Amber was deeply disturbed throughout the story.

I think that when Amber told Paul that the diaries were Claire’s. That’s Amber lying.
And if that’s the case her writing in the diary that Taylor made me do it is also a lie.
I don’t think Taylor’s parents would have left the house to their adopted daughter. They were good parents and loved their child and I don’t believe that they would just forget about their first child. I believe Claire was Taylor. The write for the diary hates anyone that Taylor loved reason why Amber hated Taylor’s husband for no reason and also killed him in the end.
If Claire really was the dangerous one then why didn’t she kill Paul once Amber was in a coma.
Amber is the writer of the diary and Claire is Taylor. This would also explain the hate Amber has towards Madeline.
In the diary the writer was jealous of Taylor’s life. Amber also says she’s jealous of Claire.
The bracelet is the one thing I can’t explain.

Did Jo actually exist? To me (as the book progressed), Jo sounded like a figment of imagination.
…but wouldn’t her colleagues have noticed her talking to herself?!

I think that the bracelet might also be Amber's imagination as when she was in comma in one of her dreams a little girl was also wearing something gold on her wrists. I am srsly confused

Maybe I'm wrong but there are only 2 people left who knew about the bracelet....Amber and her husband.
But I'm still not sure......
I think the husband had something to do with it, how i 'm not sure though.

Yeah I was confused by the ending too. I was listening to it on Audible so I went back a chapter or two to re-listen and I feel like there's a huge chunk missing still.

I’m glad I’m not the only one confused. My thought on this was that Amber, Claire, Paul, Taylor, etc were all multiple personalities in one person. But I couldn’t determine who else was real. I couldn’t tell if the whole plot beyond the killing of her parents happened in her head or if her adult life where she had a career, met Edward, had kids, etc. was real.

I just read this book-finally. I got it but the answer is a definite spoiler. Try rereading the final chapter-between the lines.

Apart from claire, amber is also twisted....yes amber was in coma, yes her sister had a tragic death...but she sometimes I lie as...' diaries are Ambers' ...also amber had planned to accuse Madeline with murder of claire while she was working as pa

I would say turn it upside down. Or more accurately turn your thinking upside down. I thought it was great. I thought "Boy, I didn't see that coming."
Susan
Me too! Haven’t found the time to reread.

I totally agree with Taz

IN THE HOSPITAL WHEN CLAIR TOOK THE BRACELET AMBER SAYS SHE OPENS HER EYES AND THE BRACELET WAS GONE ....
ALSO Sometimes when she is talking she talks as if she was Claire as a child.....

I don't understand it either. I think it may be lots of cliff hangers at the end????
Edie
I am confused as well as everyone....glad I am not alone...I think Edward is still alive and stalking her and he was the one who laid the bracelet down??
