I don't think he was dead due to them never finding a body. WHO KNOWS this was a confusing book, but then again, maybe the author did it on purpose so we could experience through Amber's eyes her life and constant mental state. I don't know.
Amber never told Claire where he lived. I think Edward faked his own demise.
Claire could have killed Edward and planted the blood on the tanning bed? I don't know. Where is Edward's body?
