What about the fact that they were born on the same day?there are some many reasons I think they are the same person, but why does Claire have a "real" family?
Claire, Paul and Edward are all real.
But really, Amber have masochist tendencies, OCD, is a pyromaniac etc.
Amber and Claire can't be the same person because then why would there be a murder trial for Madeline? Unless that too is in her head.
Her being both of them and having a split personality is a possibility, but Claire had another family before and Madeline is blamed for a murder. Those two things point to it not being a multiple personality disorder thing.
If it weren't for those elements, I would think Claire and Amber/Taylor were the same person.
But I believe that they aren't. Instead Claire had complete control over Amber because she would blame the whole thing on her. Claire could manipulate people well, so Amber knew with that line that Taylor made me do it and Claire's mainpulation abilities, the whole thing would be blamed on her if she said anything.
So this to me was a story of a victim that had enough and became the person she hated. She committed the same kinds of crimes: murder and manipulation.
I have also entertained the idea that Amber is the real psycho and Claire was the victim and Amber is painting the story she wants us to see it.
My only problem with that version is the Diary entries are written by someone with mental issues--that is very clear. She is overly obsessed with Taylor. But then again, maybe those weren't what the diary entries said and Amber led us to believe that was what Claire wrote.
But for now I stick with the theory that Claire was the psycho, Amber was the victim, but the victim snapped and became a villain herself.
