LittleDeadRedGoddessPersephone I definitely believe that Amber is a split. There were too many times when things happened and Amber seemed very confused. I feel that we were given multiple hints throughout the book that Amber has a split. I also wonder if perhaps Jo is her split. Sometimes personalities do converse with one another.

Elizabeth Was waiting to see if anyone was going to say anything about Jo because Paul tried to get in touch with Jo only to find out that there was no Jo employed there.

LittleDeadRedGoddessPersephone Yeah, that is why it totally makes sense to me that she is her split.

Marti Young Amber also loses time. There are occurrences when she doesn't remember getting out of the shower, walking downstairs, etc. If she is a split, this makes perfect sense and also is a set up for the sequel.

Sheri G I thought through the whole thing there was only one person with 2 personalities - Claire and Taylor/Amber - yet others refer to each of them so they must be 2 people. I really think in the end Amber is the real psychotic and has manipulated everything from the start during their childhood. I also noticed the time discrepancy and the intentional mention of an anniversary - almost conspiritorial in nature - like they were in on something sinister together. But the bracelet on the tray makes no sense in any of it. Unless Amber turned into Claire (her other personality) and did it to mess with Amber.

Katie Chambers I like the idea of it being a split personality and it would fit in a lot of ways, but there are two ways it doesn't seem to fit to me:

Her being both of them and having a split personality is a possibility, but Claire had another family before and Madeline is blamed for a murder. Those two things point to it not being a multiple personality disorder thing.

Amber could have made up Claire being from another family true. But how can you make up a dead body of a person named Claire for Madeline to stand trail for murder?

If it weren't for those elements, I would think Claire and Amber/Taylor were the same person.
