Yeah I'm with you Claire - totally confusing. However I think Taz has explained it perfectly, but clearly there are writing flaws to leave so many readers confused!!
Listened to the audio book. Somewhere in chapter 53 or so it took a strange turn out of nowhere and I am completely lost on that ending. I shouldn't have to research to figure out what that was
I'm so glad I'm not alone in the confusion. I listened to the end, and don't doubt that I would have loved the story if I just understood who's who.

Same!! I was like what just happened? and here I am researching all of it bc I feel like I invested so much time reading it!
