Laura Mary Roth I kind of agree with this. Her mom could have had two personalities too which would explain why Claire’s mom was horrible and Taylor’s mom was nice. Amber did say that her mom didn’t want to have kids. Doesn’t sound like something Taylor’s mom would say.

Julie Miller Of course Claire would have thought Amber’s parents were awesome, as a poor 10-year old with alcoholic parents! But of course she wouldn’t see all the complication in Ambers own world, because she’s just a messed-up kid. We can’t trust the validity of the diaries.

Donna Lichtfuss Not all the characters, but some of them. I think Paul was real and she did kill her parents. The battle between Claire and Amber was her alter egos.

Empress5150 I think this is what I'm going to settle on as well as it ran through my mind many times that Amber had multiple personalities even before the "twist" at the end. Did anyone else catch that, early in the book, she was feeling sorry for Madeline's PA (she apparently had some co-talk show host role) but then towards then end when she was describing how she'd framed Madeline for Claire's murder (if this even happened) she described herself as the PA? And, it's possible she "made up" the images on the TV towards the end (of the trial). Just like it's possible she was "someone else" when she slept with Edward. Did he even exist? He seemed way over the top as well. In general I agree, this was confusing and made me think how much better, say, Shelter Island by Dennis Lehane was for a real super duper twist ending!

Michaela I agree with this also!

aymcb I think this statement made a closure for me. I can accept this ending and move on. Thanks for the insight 😆
