Oooh... they planned it all along. Remember not much is said about claire and David's relationship. And if Claire didn't die at the end, then the only one really dead is David. The sisters probably set up Madeline to take the fall for it all, and Amber somehow taking custody of the children while Claire stays away is somehow payment for all that Amber has done for her? Earlier in the book, Claire stood up for Taylor in school and Claire interpreted Taylor's behaviour afterwards as payment as well. Seems like the logical explanation.
