why would goodreads disallowed it? pls enlighten me
Antoine wrote: "Riddle of the Sands, published in 1903, belongs on this list, but is being disallowed by Goodreads."According to my searches, although Riddle of the Sands was written in 1903, it was not published until 1915. I think this is a moot point. To my mind, if the date of writing is known and that differs from the publication date, it should be the former date that is accepted. After all the author was writing the work in the context of that earlier date. If one always took the publication date as being sacrosanct, we should have, for instance, no chronology for Shakespeare's plays as none were published in his lifetime and there is a great deal of difference in the plays written in Elizabeth's reign from those written in James's reign because of both the context in which they were written and the developing maturity of the writer.!
Janna wrote: "The Secret Garden wasn't published until 1911."That was in book form. It was serialised in the autumn of 1910 and we don't know when, before that, it was finished. I think we can allow it to squeak in, don't you?
Deirdre wrote: To my mind, if the date of writing is known and that differs from the publication date, it should be the former date that is accepted. This would cause great confusion with, especially, collected works, translations, anthologies, works published posthumously, etc. Also, a writer may take ten years to complete something, during which time the work may have been published in part; we do not catalogue the date the world first witnessed the text (unless that date is specific to the edition in question), but rather the date the work was first published in the form/state of completion as we know it. Think of chapters or excerpts published in magazines before a work is finalised: it is more consistent and easier to nail down a date of publication if that date is considered to be when a work was first published whole (or as complete as possible, such as in cases of unfinished works, most likely published posthumously). Ultimately, goodreads is organised around books, not writing. Hope that helps clarify!

I take your point, but there were a few publications of quartos of Shakespeare in his lifetime. We have a fairly solid chronology for the WRITING of the plays, give or take a year here and there, but of course the major publication date is the First Folio, 1623.
Lobstergirl wrote: "Maurice wasn't published until 1971."True. Removed it.
ETA: Also removed the "two in one" edition of "White Fang" and "Call of the Wild," since both books are on the list individually already.

Riddle of the Sands was definitely published in or by 1903, as I'm looking at a 1903 edition of it on Googlebooks.
Peter Pan was first published in 1911. It is already in the list Best books of the decade: 1910. I think we should remove it.
It actually does belong on both lists: The play dates from 1904, the novelization from 1911. Unfortunately, in the GR database, both text versions seem to be linked; and quite frankly, with 527 individual editions to be sorted out, I for one don't have the stamina to separate them ...
LOL.Besides, isn't there some rule to the effect that once it's more than 500 (or so) combined editions, it actually takes a super-librarian to separate or (re-)combine books?
I don't remember what exactly is the limit of books -- but I do remember running into this when trying to sort out another huge bestseller in the past ...
I don't understand the argument for keeping The Secret Garden in the 1900s list... It was written in 1910, not 1911, sure, but 1910 is in the 1910s, not the 1900s. Duh?
All the Googling and Wikipedia searching in the world doesn't seem to be giving me any evidence of the existence of such a play... Is it by the same author? All the sources I've found just say that it was serialized starting in 1910, and published as a complete book in 1911.

Removed The Secret Garden ... there certainly isn't any reason why THAT book should be on this list (first serialized in 1910, first published in one piece in 1911, as you said).

Oooh, haha! I'm glad to know I'm not just crazy. :)
Regarding The Education of Henry Adams, does anyone have book in hand or a solid source to confirm the date?
Depending on where I look, I see a publication date of 1918, a publication date of 1907, and written in 1907 but published in 1918. Without book in hand, I hesitate to remove it from this list though it currently shows a publication of 1918.

Removed the combo edition of Call of the Wild/White Fang again because both are on the list individually. :D
Also ran a check for duplicates, 2 found and removed.

According to Wikipedia, Adams paid to have the book printed in a very limited edition and circulated this privately among friends from 1907. But the first commercial edition appeared in 1918. My personal inclination would be for the latter date, since that's when the book became available to the general public, as a result of which it went on to win the Pulitzer in 1919.

Book number 139, 'Why I Am So Wise' by Nietzsche, is only a chapter from the book 'Ecce Homo', which was indeed published in 1908, though written in 1888.
Removed Perrault, 'Puss in Boots', published 1697. Removed Nietzsche, 'Why I Am So Wise', excerpt from 'Ecce Homo'.
Deleted Peter Pan the novel, which was published in 1911. (The play was first performed in 1904, but the play script was not published until 1928.)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_a...
A Princess in Calico by Edith Ferguson Blackwas published in 1903. I have checked Worldcat.
The system will not allow me to add it.
