Books That Should Be Made Into Movies

This is a list of books that are not movies now but should be in the future.

If you would like a book-to-movie remake, there is another list where you can add it, so please do not post those here.

Also, please do not post boxed sets or samples; many of them have books that are already on the list or books that have already been made into movies, and samples of books are incomplete excerpts of books that are about to be released.

Lastly, please do not spam this list by making puppet accounts to promote your own book or a book by someone you know. Any books listed that appear to be violating this rule will be removed without prior notice.

message 1: by Robin (new)

Robin Reading this book you can almost "see" the scenes it would make a great movie.

message 2: by Michael (new)

Michael Kucharski Likely none of the books listed, the average movie script is 100 pages, which means the best movies are made from short stories, novellas or (by today's standards) short novels. I, for one, am tired of butched movie adaptions of novels, which are usually made not because the movie will be better than book or to further book sales but simply to make money and because studios are scared of doinf something original.

message 3: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Most screenplays I've seen are 100-120 pages; the screenplay for Whale Song fits in that range and a respected film director is already interested. In fact, he called me after he read the script. Thankfully, he sees the vision of this film as much ad I do.

message 4: by Carol (new)

Carol With the exception of Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon I haven't read any of the others yet.

message 5: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Did someone change the name of this list? If so, what was the original title? Something to do with books that would make good movies? Let me know and I'll change it back.

message 6: by travelmel (new)

travelmel This was already done!

message 7: by Eddie (new)

Eddie 3 people voted for Angela's Ashes? Umm...there was a very famous movie made out of that a few years ago!

I suppose movies based on the Dark Tower series would be interesting, although it wouldn't work nearly as well as the books. Why bother?

Life of Pi would have definite movie potential.

message 8: by Mia (new)

Mia Marlowe I was just about to point that out, Emma. The movie Angela's Ashes was quite poignant and made me read the book.

message 9: by C. (new)

C. McKenzie I voted with the hope that if the books I enjoyed would be movies I could enjoy as well.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I think that Clay by David Almond should be made into a movie... I can actually see the movie when I read the book. Too bad I'm not a producer, I wouldn't be able to make a movie or flash animation to save my life... :D

message 11: by Rob (last edited May 17, 2009 05:39AM) (new)

Rob "Should" be pretty subjective, I'd like to think of my votes as "a few books/stories I'd love to see made into movies". (Also: what's up with the comments on my particular votes not "sticking"...?)

message 12: by Mike (last edited May 26, 2009 12:06PM) (new)

Mike I would argue that Ender's Game should be a movie. Yes, it's great, it's amazing really, but it's amazing because it's a well written book. I think it would lose a lot in translation to screenplay and would lose a lot depending on the actors. I chose not to put it in my list because of this. It's the thought of another book being ruined by a bad movie version. At least if we're going to ruin books, let's ruin the bad ones and not the good ones.
Not that I'm saying that the books I chose are bad books, just that if we're going to ruin a book by making it into a movie, just making it trite and predictable and easily accessible to all audiences, let's choose bad book that's poorly written. Then we'll look up from our good books that we're all snobby about and say "Oh, well, I wouldn't have read THAT." I think my new goal in life is to be as snobby as possible while not deserving to be.

message 13: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I don't know what I did. I thought I was making my own list. Sorry if I messed up your list. =(

message 16: by Lee (new)

message 17: by Heather (new)

Heather Into Thin Air A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster was made into a movie by an independent company. My dad has the DVD.

message 18: by Mallory (new)

Mallory The Time Traveler's Wife has already been made and will be released in theaters August. The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

message 19: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan i love th emorganville vampires books!!! they are my favorite series out of all the books ive read!..and ive read alot of books....

message 20: by Hadley (new)

Hadley I think the mysterious benedict society would be a great movie. (I pretty sure that the book would still be better)

message 21: by Serena (new)

Serena I think Airborn by Kenneth Oppel should be on there. It was soo good!

message 22: by Heather (new)

Heather Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and all but the last Harry Potter book have been made into movies.

message 23: by Heather (new)

Heather So has Twilight and New Moon is in post production.

message 24: by Ronyell (new)

Ronyell I think "The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship" should be on that list, but that's a kid's book! Although, this list seems pretty good.

message 25: by Amaal (new)

Amaal Ibrahim i think " Sundays at Tiffany's" should be added here

message 26: by Conor (new)

Conor 45 books on this list that have been made into movies, are being made into movies, or books adapted for television.

message 27: by Nina (new)

Nina Therkildsen Uglies should definitely be made into a movie!

message 28: by Silver (new)

Silver It is funny, I found there were some books that I liked too much to want to see as movies, becasue the movies always end up ruining them in someway. But there are some books that would be kind of cool to see.

message 29: by Shannan (new)

Shannan Henry when you're reading a book, you can visualize it like a movie, but when they actually are made into movies they almost never live up to my expectations.
like many of the harry potters.
like the golden compass.
like twilight.

message 30: by Shannon (new)

Shannon how do u add a book

message 31: by Shannon (new)

Shannon thr3e is already a movie

message 32: by Glenda (new)

Glenda I think "She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb should be made into a movie.

message 33: by Claire (last edited Sep 07, 2009 01:42PM) (new)

Claire I think "Kissed by an Amgel" by Elizabeth Chandler should. I read the book several times and it is soo good! Anyone else read it??

message 35: by Daryn (new)

Daryn Weil Definitely would like to see Home Repair as a movie-- along the lines of Something's Gotta Give or My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It would be one of those quirky movies with heart. The movies this year have been dismal except for Every Little Step!

message 36: by Sam (new)

Sam OMG if City of Bones was made into a movie I would FREAK OUT!!

message 37: by Mir (new)

Mir I am Legend and Dragons of Autumn Twilight are both movies already.

Charlotte (Buried in Books) The Pilot's Wife - TV movie in 2002. Had Christine Lahti in it.

message 39: by J (new)

message 41: by Kristie (new)

Kristie Klickin
I agree about Life of Pi. It would be a challenge but worth trying. I also agree about Home Repair Give me a movie with heart every time. I get so tired of violent movies.

I saw a picture of the cast of the Lightning Thief and the boy who's going to play Grover, well, I think that he doesn't look like Grover.

same here!!!

message 48: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith i was reluctant to vote for some of the books i did, but out of the ones i did vote for i am hoping that if they were, they wouldn't/won't be messed up entirely.

message 49: by Darienbo (new)

Darienbo I want to see Cuba Gooding play Jonah in Home Repair! I agree that the danger of voting for a book you love is the fear of what they might do-- then again think of Heart is a Lonely Hunter or To Kill a Mockingbird where film and books are equally great. It DOES happen. It still can.

message 50: by George (new)

George Green I'm choosing Home Repair by Liz Rosenberg because it's the kind of heart warming people-centered movie I am always looking for and hardly ever find. Also Lonely Londoners because it's the kind of movie we SHOULD all see. And To the Lighthouse because it would be such a challenge.
