Ellsie wrote: "looked at this list, the books seem a little bit young"What do you mean by "little bit young"? That's what MG is???
Ellsie,There is a difference between middle school and middle grade. Middle school is from (usually) 6th to 8th grade. Middle grade books are usually categorized as from about 4th to 8th grade.(These are the middle grades of the US educational system - K-3 is primary and 9-12 is high school -4-8 is in the middle.) Therefore there would be books on this list that are too young for you. As a middle school student you are on the upper end of middle grade and the lower end of young adult. When telling about a book, publishers often designate either lower mg (4-6) or upper mg (5-8). Hope this helps.
Ellsie wrote: "i am in 6th, right in the middle"While many of the books on this list are for 9-12 year olds, there are some that are being marketed for 10-14 year olds. Books like The False Prince, The Runaway King, and Wake Up Missing are written for kids exactly your age - and I know they are good books! I read One Came Home and even though Barnes and Noble has it listed for 9-12, I would disagree. I teach fifth and my more mature students would have liked it, but not everyone. You are right in the middle right now, but there are many books out there that I know you will enjoy. Keep looking!
Ellsie wrote: "what is your favorite book"When I was your age, I loved the The Chronicles of Narnia. I also loved Madeleine L'Engle. Although I loved the Time Trilogy (which is now a Quartet), starting with A Wrinkle in Time, I actually prefered some of her other books, including the series starting with Meet the Austins and The Arm of the Starfish. I especially loved how her books were interconnected - characters from one book would show up in a different book! It was like a puzzle putting them all together. Of more recent books, I have really liked One Came Home, The Center of Everything, A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story, and Courage Has No Color, The True Story of the Triple Nickles: America's First Black Paratroopers. I am reading The False Prince now and am enjoying it. I know that one of the favorite authors of the girls I teach is Wendy Mass. I need to read more of her stuff. I know A Mango-Shaped Space was really enjoyed by a bunch of my girls last year.
What are some of your favorite books?
my favorite books are, the book thief, sense and sensibility, harry potter, the apothecary, animal farm, the count of Monte Cristo, and little women.

Ellsie, since I am in the same grade as you, I think we might like similar books. My favorite books are: the Infinity Ring series, Percy Jackson, Heroes Of Olympus, Matched, Divergent, and Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life. If you want more of my recommended books, you can go to my bookshelf. Read books that are the types of my books you like (ex. historical fiction, realistic fiction, and fantasy).

Someone should remove "The Princess and Curdie" from this list. It's not from 2013."The Junction of Sunshine and Lucky" is 2014, not 2013. "The False Prince" is 2012, not 2013. "Frindle" is from 1996, not 2013.
I love "The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door," but I don't think it counts as a middle grade novel. The characters are freshmen in high school and there is profanity. I think once a character drops the f-bomb, you can't really count the book as middle grade!
Just became a librarian, so removed several non-2013 books as well as a few titles that were YA, not middle grade.
Ok, I spent some time cleaning up this list. Frankly it was kind of a mess.Removed these for wrong publication year....
Culloo (2012)
Drama (2012)
Coraline (2008)
Hero on a Bicycle (2012)
Song of the Quarkbeast (2011)
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2011)
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Race Against Time (2012)
Removed these for wrong publication year *and* wrong category.....
The Kite Runner (2003, not middle grade)
Ghost World (1998, not middle grade)
Leader of the Tribe (2012, not middle grade)
The Iron King (2010, not middle grade)
Etched in Clay (2012, not a novel)
V for Vendetta (1982, not middle grade)
Watchmen (1987, not middle grade)
The Walking Dead Compendium 1 (2009, not middle grade)
There's probably more, but I'll have to come back to it later. If anyone notices problematic books they can mention them here and I'll remove them.
Rainbowheart,Thank you so much for your clean up. Most of the ones you removed were correct. The book by Hughes Hero on a Bicycle
, though, is a middle grade novel published in 2013. It says so right in the publication data on Goodreads, and has been a part of some Newbery discussions this year. I am going to add it back on the list.
Hi Becky, no prob! I wasn't sure about that one. Hero on a Bicycle was actually first published in England in 2012, but the American edition came out in 2013. Are we counting from first publishing date or American publishing date?
Removed these....The End Games
Vampire Academy
The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door
The Counterfeit Family Tree of Vee Crawford-Wong
They're all YA, not middle grade.
Ellsie wrote: "looked at this list, the books seem a little bit young"Ellsie,
You are wrong. I've read a few and I'm older than you. They are all magnificent books despite your age. The School for Good and Evil is utterly AMAZING and so is A Tale Dark and Grimm. Their sequels are even better. So I completely disagree that they 'are a little too young' If you really believe this, then try reading a High School level book and then you'll want to read six grade level books again. Other people reading this and are interested, do not be put down by ' Ellsie'. The books are great no matter how young or old you are.
Removed: The False Prince by Jennifer NielsenThis book was first published in 2012 and is already on the "Middle Grade Novels of 2012" list (link: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...)
