Lisa McMann lives and writes in the Phoenix area. Her newest middle grade fantasy series is called The Forgotten Five. Book one, Map of Flames, was an instant NYT bestseller. It's about five supernatural kids, raised in a deserted hideout, who enter civilization for the first time to search for a hidden stash left behind by their missing, criminal parents.

Book two, The Invisible Spy, is on sale now! Book three, Rebel Undercover, is coming summer 2023, and book 4 will be out in spring of 2024.

Also out now: CLARICE THE BRAVE. It's a story of hope against all odds, about sibling mice who get separated in a mutiny and vow to find one another again.

I got the idea for The Unwanteds series from my children when they were 9 and 12 (they are now in college at the time I of this writing).

They came home from school one day with a letter that said that the arts classes at school would be canceled because of budget problems.

I knew my kids would be sad, because my son loves art. My daughter loves to sing and act. To sympathize with them, I said "I'm so sorry, kids. It kind of feels like you're being punished for being creative."

And then I thought about that, and I asked out loud, "What if there really was a world where children were punished for being creative?" and my son (who was 12) said, "Not just punished--sent to their deaths!"

And that is how The Unwanteds began. :) (less)

Happy reading!

Book three in The Forgotten Five series is available now. It's called Rebel Undercover, and continues the story of five supernatural kids, raised in a deserted hideout, who enter civilization for the first time ever to search for their missing criminal parents and the stash they left behind. It's kind of like The Incredibles, but the parents are supernatural villains instead of heroes. Will the ki Read more of this blog post »

Lisa answered Emmy G's question: Lisa McMann
Hi! I cried as I wrote the deaths too (well, the deaths of the good characters, anyway). Some were terribly sad. But each one was so important to the story. I knew in my writer-heart and my writer-soul it was the right thing to do, even if it made me See Full Answer
Lisa answered tdadragon's question: Lisa McMann
I love them all in different ways! But Cabot and Tenner are the most like me (I like to spy on people and I'm awkward), and Lada is a favorite too because she is modeled after a friend of mine.

“That was the goth stage, where I decided I'd never get the girl of my dreams because of my scars. Not to mention my hairstyle. (pause) But then she slammed a door handle into my gut. And when a girl does that to a boy, it means she likes him.”
Lisa McMann, Wake

“Dreams aren't memories," he says.”

“Cabel: Um, Janie?
Janie: Yesss, Cabel?
Cabel: I have another lie to confess.
Janie: Oh, dear. What is it?
Cabel: I do, actually, know what my GPA is.
Janie: And?
Cabel: And. I have a full-ride scholarship.
Cabel is pushed violently from the beanbag chair. And pounced upon. And told, repeatedly, what a bastard he is.
Janie is told that she will most certainly get a scholarship too, with her grades. Unless she plays hooky with drug dealers.”

“WAKE

Dealing with an alcoholic single mother and endless hours of working at Heather Nursing Home to raise money for college, high-school senior Janie Hannagan doesn’t need more problems. But inexplicably, since she was eight years old, she has been pulled in to people’s dreams, witnessing their recurring fears, fantasies and secrets. Through Miss Stubin at Heather Home, Janie discovers that she is a dream catcher with the ability to help others resolve their haunting dreams. After taking an interest in former bad boy Cabel, she must distinguish between the monster she sees in his nightmares and her romantic feelings for him. And when she learns more about Cabel’s covert identity, Janie just may be able to use her special dream powers to help solve crimes in a suspense-building ending with potential for a sequel. McMann lures teens in by piquing their interest in the mysteries of the unknown, and keeps them with quick-paced, gripping narration and supportive characters.”

message 22: by Angee (last edited Apr 05, 2009 04:20PM)

Angee Wentz Thanks again for your email with advice! By your taking time to respond to me, I went to Barnes & Noble and bought your books Wake and Fade. Well, for some unknown reason, every time I am at Barnes & Noble, people always randomly approach me and ask me for my recommendations for books. Why? I have no idea, but honestly the last three times I've been there I've been approached by someone I don't know asking me what books I like.
The reason I'm telling you this is because yesterday while I was picking up your book, again I was approached. The lady that came up to me saw your books in my hands and I told her of your kindness and the time that you took for me. She then (being touched also by your story of kindness) bought your books for herself and for her mother; it was her mother's birthday.

So, thank you! And I'm glad to have been able to refer your book!

message 21: by Kendra

message 20: by Neal

Neal Hey Miss. Mcmann, i just finished fade. It was just as good if not better than the first. I read it in like 2 sittings. lol. You are an amazing author/writer. I realy love the way you narrated the whole book. I can't wait to read the books you write in the future. :)

message 19: by Shel

Shel I just wanted to say that I think you're an amazing author. I read soo many books and Wake & Fade both have spots in my top ten favorites. I sort my books on shelves by favorites, both of yours are on the top shelf. I lend my books to friends all the time, and whenever I lend them yours, they always say they loved it and it's one of their favorites, too. They always ask, "When's the next one coming out ?" And whe I tell them 2010, they groan and say it's too long. I agree ! Haha.

Keep writing and being amazing !

Elizabeth Scott Thanks for the rec!
