message 1559: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 54 comments Well I wasn't sure I'd participate this round, but I've found myself with an unplanned day and figured why not see what fits in.

10.7 Promise Her Anything: The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories by Susanna Clarke
The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories by Susanna Clarke

10.10 Top Ten Lists: Dracula by Bram Stoker
From the TOP 10 Good Sex in Fiction.

Personal opinion? I don't agree, I know the bloodlust is supposed to be a metaphor for another kind of lust but there just isn't that much "bloodlusting" going on in this book. I think there are more interesting metaphors present and the popular consensus is based more on pop culture movie versions of the tale than on the novel. It makes me wonder if the list maker has actually read it.

Anyways...

15.7 The Book is Always Better: The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot
From "The Movie Was Better than the Book" list.

I agree with this one. Julie Andrews was actually classy or posh enough to feel like she might be a queen of a small country, as opposed to the ridiculous character (More Jersey Shore than Grace of Monaco) that was her grandmother in the book. Her best friend was equally irritating in both however.

15.10 Keep It Simple: An Arsonist's Guide to Writers' Homes in New England by Brock Clarke

20.3 Frosty the Snowman: Marked by P.C. Cast
I think I would prefer to keep my own shape, but I wouldn't mind having magical powers of some variety. That would be pretty sweet.

20.6 The Twenty-tens: Love in the Asylum: A Novel by Lisa Carey
The Main character Alba Elliot is 25 and I'm in my 20's.

Bea 20.5 Bigger is Better...

Something to Prove by Yvonne Thornton

At first I thought I might have chosen the wrong book; but as I read, I began to marvel at this woman who truly did not let the obstacles of bigotry, race, being a woman in a man's arena, family demands and failures to side-track her from being her best and doing what was right for her patients and family. Many other women would have been deterred or reduced by some of the obstacles that Dr. Thornton faced. Yet, she persevered by recalling her father's teachings and life example. Truly a woman to be emulated and admired. One whose approach to her own life beckons others to try to be better too.
I think I read the right book for this task. Dr. Thornton is definitely unconventional in many ways!

The Sixty Minute Father and The Sixty Minute Mother

20.7

I quite enjoy Christmas so I read Slow Man which is about a man coping with losing a leg after an accident. It's pretty dark and depressing. Although by the end he is learning to accept what has happened, he is still a shadow of his former self.
