30.3 HO! HO! HO!

A. cold weather- set in Sweden: Sun Storm by Åsa Larsson

B. Santa's spirit- "list": Hit List by Darcia Helle

Sun Storm was ok- a moody, psychological thriller, but a bit predictable. Hit List needed a good editor- it had enjoyable characters and a decent plot, but too many unnecessary scenes feeding cats, ordering in diners, etc. that slowed the story considerably.

On Writing for Children & Other People by Julius Lester

A very nice book on different aspects of Lester's life that informed his writing.

30.5 Old/New

Old: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold; number 4 on my tbr list; read Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon long ago - very weird! Lovely Bones was surprisingly different - TAM was very dark and strange while LB was very touching.

New: Room by Emma Donoghue; newish to my TBR list; new to me author. I was curious about this one but not sure I'd like it. It was a very worthwhile read, glad I read it!
