To root out, with your help, the highest rated books on Goodreads. Please only include books with at least 100 ratings. Not all of these may be ones you yourself rate highly, but think it could be an interesting list.
NOTE: Please do not include layman-unfriendly textbooks or collections (box sets/complete works/collector's editions, that is, collections of entire books. Single volume anthologies can be included.) where the individual books do not score as highly - this could skew the list.

I was looking out for a list like this one, but I think it's not worth adding books with less than, say, 100 ratings. Is there any way you can create a query on Goodreads with certain criteria, instead of creating a list from scratch? Does anyone know?
Susanna wrote: "Several very good books miss by only .01! That's cutting it close."Yes, I noticed the same thing ... :(

I thank you."
Deleted:
Ireland-now the good news: the best of "Bread" Vols.1 & 2, 1990-1993 (only 1 rating, the author's own ... who also added it to this list)
The Heaven Tree Trilogy ("complete set" of Pargeter's Heaven Tree novels)
Vampire Academy Box Set

Melissa: Is there a certain minimum number of ratings you'd like to see? If so, you could include it in the list description and we could at least TRY to weed out the non-compliant books every so often ...
Tiger's Quest (# 16) seems to be just under in rating - 4.46. Should I remove it? ETA: Several on the list are currently less than a 4.5 rating. Should they be removed?

I'd be all for that -- several of those books were only added within the last couple of hours, incidentally, if I'm not wrong. Looks like this is a list to be closely monitored, at least for the time being!
Removed, for average ratings below 4.5:Unbroken, by Lauren Hillenbrand

Susanna, that sounds like an awful lot of work! On behalf of those who care, thanks for taking the time ...
No problem. The way GR lists the average rating right next to the title on the list made this pruning fairly easy!
Removed from list: Blue Lights and Long Nights (rating: 4.44) and Scanners Live in Vain (rating: 4.49).
Removed, for having an average rating of less than 4.5:The Hunger Games
The Ninth Orphan
The Unwords

Catching Fire
Memoranda on Poisons
Tiger's Curse
Front-Line Diplomacy: Humanitarian Aid and Conflict in Africa
Empire of the Clouds: When Britain's Aircraft Ruled the World

Lees Lieutenants Volume 3: A Study in Command, Gettysburg to Appomattox
Horses of the Camargue
Great list, but I think you should only include books with say at least 100 reviews...otherwise it isn't very indicative of much.
I agree with Miquixote above, and would even raise it to 200 ratings, IMHO. There seem to be quite a few books with 10 or fewer ratings, which isn't a good gage of how a book would do normally.Heck, I voted for an older, not-very-well-known children's book with 32 ratings, and I'd be ok with it being nixed. Even though I loved it, I gotta admit that it probably wouldn't be as well-rated if more people weighed in.
Miquixote wrote: "Great list, but I think you should only include books with say at least 100 reviews...otherwise it isn't very indicative of much."Exactly what I proposed on April 12th, to no effect until now...
For a number of reasons, some listed above, Goodreads ratings are not worth much. They might help sell books, but they have little if any integrity. Stars without a review are totally meaningless.
Deleted Foster Fox: A 10,000 Lakes Tale : ZERO GR ratings and sole book voted onto this list by its own author (who has also added it to a large number of other lists recently, regardless whether in keeping with the list description or not, and in several cases while at the same time also adding a self-promotional message in the comments section soliciting reviews).
removed for falling below 4.5:life and fate
roots of the cypress
taash and the jesters
if this is a man/the truce
some of the books have very low number of ratings . i think only books which have been rated more than 500 should be included
Librarians can only remove books which do not fit the category. Because of this, we will only remove books which are not over 4.5--we will have to leave the ones with few ratings because the category doesn't specify that a book has to have a certain number of ratings. To do anything else would be to risk losing librarian status.Removed for falling below 4.5:
The Whore and Her Mother (rating: 4.40)
PA Exposé (rating: 3.80)
Chocolate for Breakfast (rating 4.30)
The Magic Penny (rating 4.33)
Grande Sertão: Veredas (rating 4.49)
Jackie Leven Said (rating 4.29)
Great idea for a list and glad to see it's being curated, so to speak! (If you want help, I'm happy to chip in too.)Honest, I think 100 ratings it too low a threshold. It's not all too difficult to mount a campaign to up-vote a book with so few ratings. If you want to stay in statistically solid territory I'd say at least 500 ratings is a good threshold.
I'd also recommend putting the threshold in the list description. I know some people will still ignore it or simply not notice it, but it would help a little.
Removed, for falling below a 4.5 average rating:Past, Present, and Promises
The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap
Hillbilly Tales from the Smoky Mountains - And Other Homespun Remedies, Proverbs, and Poetry

The Sibylline Oracle

Also removed, for having been added in contravention to message 1 above ("And authors - if your book has only one rating, and that rating is from you - don't be cheeky! That's not what this list is about and you know it!")
Fateful Firsts
Second Thoughts: A Collection of Poetry
A Candlelit World
Scrambled Egg: Poems and Other Confessions
I was going to add The Complete Shakespeare to my list, but I see the directions say we shouldn't include Complete/collected Works. I guess this should be deleted, along with Jane Austen's complete novels.
Thank you so much for keeping this up- I really appreciate this list. And it does help to include books with at least 100 ratings IMO and delete those collections or box sets that keep popping up. I am always looking for ways to find the best books to spend my limited time reading. I have some gems that don't make the "at least" 100 ratings cut-off and others like "The Little Prince" or Mary Oliver's latest poems that don't quite make the 4.5 cut-off, but no rating system is perfect. Keep up the good work!
Looking through the list with the desire to add books to my "to read" list, I was disheartened to see SO many with fewer than '25'! ratings. And I don't think you mean to include the Bible or the Book of Mormon which are collections of books actually. So those were not helpful to me. However, as I said, this is a great list and I will keep coming back to it for gems I might find!
I compiled a list of the books currently on the list with less than 100 ratings:1106 Grand Boulevard

WOW Cary. Goes to show that not many books really stand the test of time- over time. Without checking, I have voted for one of them...However, I have several books that are on my "read" list that I gave 5 stars but they are still below 100 ratings so I didn't add them. Until or unless these are removed we will have to be more careful when choosing books.
Indeed. It's quite easy to move the average rating of a book with less than a 100 ratings. A modest lobbying of one's friends could certainly do it. In fact I think 100 is too low a threshold from a statistical standpoint. However making it 500 or something like that would keep a lot of books that really (probably) are good off the list. This also shows that it's not difficult to go through this list, identify and remove these books. I made that list in perhaps 30-40 minutes.
As Kara explained in a comment in October, the category says the list is about ratings, not number of ratings or we lose "library" status. So I guess each person must decide for themselves whether a book merits a "to read."
There's a similar list to this for books of at least 4.2 with 1000 ratings. Interesting to compare.http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/24...
I see that my book, THE MOON COIN, has been added to this list. I completely understand the more than x argument. So, before I'm voted off the island, I just want to say, as an Indie Author, with only 84 ratings at present, it's really exciting to be represented. :DTHE MOON COIN won a gold medal in the Moonbeam Children's Book Awards this Fall, but that doesn't always translate quickly into ratings or sales. For books not published by one of the 6 Goliath Book Corporations, things usually happen in slow motion.
The complete works of Shakespeare and Jane Austin should both be removed as per the original guidelines of no complete works of authors or box sets.
Wow, this list really gets out of hand when no one looks at it. It's important to note that I did NOT remove books with fewer than x ratings as that would be against Goodreads policy.Removed
Darkest Powers Trilogy - individual books do not score as highly (per original guidelines)
The Orphan Factory - 4.48 rating

A couple of those were mine; obviously I need to check the ratings more often.Feynman is also one of mine. I added it because it's fairly layman friendly, has quite a few ratings, and the individual volumes rate as high or higher than the collected works. Nor is it a textbook.
Cheers. The moon coin's dropped to 4.47. I took my vote off, but there's four more,so you might work your magic on it.
Pretty sure The Authoritative Calvin And Hobbes is a collection of works and not a single title.
It is interesting to compare this list to http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/24... which sets the threshold at 4.2 but requires a minimum of 1000 ratings.
I'm not sure if other people have noticed this, but there are books on here that have, say, 2 ratings, which brings the average up to 4.75. On top of that, there are books that have THOUSANDS of ratings, and still maintain a 4.5 rating.Obviously, the books with fewer ratings may not be of the same standard as some of the other titles on this list. After all, what is a more reliable statistic - 2 ratings, or 20,000?
Sadly Toda Mafalda should be removed as it is a collection of all the series's strips. Maybe Mafalda 9 could be added, but it has 10% of the other book's ratings

And authors - if your book has only one rating, and that rating is from you - don't be cheeky! That's not what this list is about and you know it!
And for the last time - no boxsets!
So...let's tidy this up a bit and have some pride in our list!
I thank you.
