Join us in learning more about how countries across the world celebrate New Years. Some are slightly more unusual than others.

Duration Jan 1, 2023 - March 31, 2023
Level 1: 5-10 tasks
Level 2 11 or more tasks.

TASKS

1. Brazil: Heading to the beach
In Brazil, people usually go to the beach since it’s the summer there. Immediately after midnight, you’re supposed to jump seven waves while making seven wishes. The tradition is rooted in paying homage to Yemanja, the goddess of water. Before you get in the water, you’re supposed to wear all white, as it symbolizes purity.
🥳 Read a book with a white cover. (Show us the cover).
🥳 Read a book set in a beach town.
🥳 Read a book that is seventh in a series.

2. Spain: Eating grapes.
The Spanish start off their new year by eating 12 grapes, which symbolize each strike of the clock. The tradition of las doce uvas de la suerte started in the late 19th century and is believed to ward off evil while boosting your chances of a prosperous and lucky new year. However, this will work only if you manage to eat all of the grapes in a matter of seconds since they need to be gone by the time the clock finishes striking midnight.
🥳 Read a book where a character eats grapes. (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #)
🥳 Read a book with a clock on the cover. (Show the cover.)
🥳 Read a book where the author's initials can be found in MIDNIGHT.

3. India: Building a sculpture of an old man and burning it down.
In India they make an effigy of an ‘old man’ that symbolized the old year and burn it at midnight. The burning symbolizes the passing of grievances from the old year and makes space for a new year to be born. People often sing 'Auld Lang Syne’ while it burns.
🥳 Read a book where a character lights a fire.
🥳 Read a book with a character who is an old man.
🥳 Read a book where the author's first name starts with a letter in AULD LANG SYNE.

4. United States: Watching the ball drop
Millions of Americans gather around their television sets or on the streets of Times Square, despite freezing temps to watch the ball drop at the stroke of midnight each year. Kicking off in 1907 to ring in January 1908, New York Times owner Adolph Ochs created the event to draw attention to the Times’s new headquarters, and it’s been an annual spectacle and one of the most popular New Year’s Eve celebrations ever since.
🥳 Read a book with a ball on the cover. (Show cover).
🥳 Read a book from the New York Times best sellers list. (Any year).
🥳 Read a book where the author's initials can be found in TIMES SQUARE.

5. Japan: Eating soba noodles.
People in Japan kick off the new year by eating a warm bowl of soba noodles. The tradition dates back to the Kamakura period and is tied to a Buddhist temple giving out the noodles to the poor. Because the long thin noodles are firm yet easy to bite, it is believed eating them symbolizes a literal break away from the old year.
🥳 Read a book where someone eats noodles. (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #)
🥳 Read a book where something gets broken.
🥳 Read a book where the MC's initials can be found in KAMAKURA.

6. Ireland: Banging bread against the walls
To ward off evil spirits, families in Ireland make way for a healthy and prosperous new year by banging loaves of Christmas bread against the walls and doors throughout the home.
🥳 Read a book that is tagged as Paranormal.
🥳 Read a book set in Ireland.
🥳 Read a book where the author's initials can be found in LOAVES.
7. Haiti: Sharing soup joumou.
January 1 is actually Haitian Independence Day. People eat pumpkin soup (soup joumou) because it was a delicacy that enslaved Black people were not allowed to have. They often go to other people’s houses and bring some of their soup and swap for some of their soup since everyone makes it a little different.
🥳 Read a book where a person eats soup. (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #)
🥳 Read a book with a pumpkin on the cover or a black cover. (Show cover).
🥳 Read a book where the author's initials can be found in JOUMOU.

8. Colombia: Placing three potatoes under the bed
On New Year’s Eve, Colombian households have a tradition, called agüero, of placing three potatoes under each family member’s bed—one peeled, one not, and the last one only partially. At midnight each person grabs for one with eyes closed and depending on the potato they select, can either expect a year of good fortune, financial struggle, or a mix of both.
🥳 Read a book set in South America.
🥳 Read a book that is 12th in a series.
🥳 Read a boo where the author's initials can be found in POTATOES.

9. Mexico: Giving the gift of homemade tamales
In Mexico families gather to make New Year’s Eve food—specifically tamales, which are corn dough stuffed with meat, cheese, and veggies all wrapped in husks—and then hand them out to loved ones on New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day, the warm pockets are often served with menudo, a traditional Mexican soup made from cow’s stomach.
🥳 Read a book set in Mexico.
🥳 Read a book where a character eats tamales.
🥳 Read a book where the author's initials can be found in HOMEMADE.

10. Canada: Going ice fishing
Freezing temps don’t keep Canadians from starting the new year with a winter favorite sport—ice fishing. According to Global News, families will rent heated huts and cooking equipment so that they can enjoy their feast with loved ones on the spot.
🥳 Read a book set in Canada.
🥳 Read a book where a character goes fishing.
🥳 Read a book where the author's initials can be found in FREEZING.

🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

🥳TOTAL: 7/30🥳

TASKS

🥳1. Brazil: Heading to the beach🥳
- Read a book with a white cover. (Show us the cover).
🥳🥳- Read a book set in a beach town.
Beach Read by Emily Henry - Read: 16/01/23

- Read a book that is seventh in a series.

🥳2. Spain: Eating grapes.🥳
- Read a book where a character eats grapes. (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #)
- Read a book with a clock on the cover. (Show the cover.)
- Read a book where the author's initials can be found in MIDNIGHT.

🥳3. India🥳
Building a sculpture of an old man and burning it down.
In India they make an effigy of an ‘old man’ that symbolized the old year and burn it at midnight. The burning symbolizes the passing of grievances from the old year and makes space for a new year to be born. People often sing 'Auld Lang Syne’ while it burns.

- Read a book where a character lights a fire.
- Read a book with a character who is an old man.
🥳🥳 Read a book where the author's first name starts with a letter in AULD LANG SYNE.
Wanderlust by Ann Aguirre - Read: 06/01/23

🥳4. United States: Watching the ball drop🥳
- Read a book with a ball on the cover. (Show cover).

🥳🥳- Read a book from the New York Times best sellers list. (Any year).
Fire Touched by Mercy Thompson - Read: 12/01/23
https://www.nytimes.com/books/bestsel...

🥳🥳- Read a book where the author's initials can be found in TIMES SQUARE.
Thereby Hangs a Tail by Stephen Quinn - Read: 08/01/23

🥳5. Japan: Eating soba noodles.🥳
- Read a book where someone eats noodles. (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #)
- Read a book where something gets broken.
- Read a book where the MC's initials can be found in KAMAKURA.

🥳6. Ireland: Banging bread against the walls🥳
To ward off evil spirits, families in Ireland make way for a healthy and prosperous new year by banging loaves of Christmas bread against the walls and doors throughout the home.
- Read a book that is tagged as Paranormal.
- Read a book set in Ireland.
🥳🥳 - Read a book where the author's initials can be found in LOAVES.
Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater - Read: 09/01/23

🥳7. Haiti: Sharing soup joumou.🥳
January 1 is actually Haitian Independence Day. People eat pumpkin soup (soup joumou) because it was a delicacy that enslaved Black people were not allowed to have. They often go to other people’s houses and bring some of their soup and swap for some of their soup since everyone makes it a little different.
- Read a book where a person eats soup. (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #)

🥳🥳- Read a book with a pumpkin on the cover or a black cover. (Show cover).
Ninth House (Alex Stern, #1) by Leigh Bardugo by Leigh Bardugo - Read: 15/01/23

- Read a book where the author's initials can be found in JOUMOU.

🥳8. Colombia: Placing three potatoes under the bed🥳
- Read a book set in South America.
- Read a book that is 12th in a series.
- Read a book where the author's initials can be found in POTATOES.

🥳9. Mexico: Giving the gift of homemade tamales🥳
- Read a book set in Mexico.
🥳🥳 Read a book where a character eats tamales.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz - Read: 02/01/23
Page 211 - 'I loved homemade tamales. I liked to warm them up in the oven ...'
- Read a book where the author's initials can be found in HOMEMADE.

🥳10. Canada: Going ice fishing🥳
Freezing temps don’t keep Canadians from starting the new year with a winter favorite sport—ice fishing. According to Global News, families will rent heated huts and cooking equipment so that they can enjoy their feast with loved ones on the spot.
- Read a book set in Canada.
- Read a book where a character goes fishing.
- Read a book where the author's initials can be found in FREEZING.

New Years Celebrations
Duration 1/1/23 - 3/31/23
Level 1: 5-10 tasks
Progress: 9 of 10
Updated: 3/2/23

TASKS

The Murder House by James Patterson & David Ellis (2/22/23)

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn (1/19/23)

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo (1/8/23)

The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline (1/15/23) ~ 2020

Holy Moments: A handbook for the rest of your life by Matthew Kelly (1/23/23)

📆 6. Ireland: Banging bread against the walls

🥳 Read a book that is tagged as Paranormal.
🥳 Read a book set in Ireland.
🥳 Read a book where the author's initials can be found in LOAVES.
You’ve Got Murder by Donna Andrews (1/31/23)

The Last Mile by David Baldacci (1/27/23)
p. 44 "Jamison [had] French onion soup."

🥳 Read a book where the author's initials can be found in POTATOES.
Billionaire in Wolf's Clothing by Terry Spear (3/2/23)
