“Historically, the people who weather crises the best are those who adjust their expectations to fit the reality of the situation.”

“Like, Well, there you go. Or, It is what it is. And, Well, what can you do? I suppose these one-offs are less idiotic than they seem on the surface. They're all a way of saying the same thing, that shit happens and you have to deal with it. You can try to ignore it, wait for it to go away. Maybe that works, but sometimes the knot won't untie itself and your attention is required. A thing you never expected, could not have predicted, suddenly becomes the foremost event in your life and no amount of wishing it away will work. In some cases, the event is small and the ramifications manageable. In my case, it affected everything. Forever.”

“Democracy in America was never the same as Liberty in Europe. In Europe Liberty was a great life-throb. But in America Democracy was always something anti-life. The greatest democrats, like Abraham Lincoln, had always a sacrificial, self-murdering note in their voices. American Democracy was a form of self-murder, always. Or of murdering somebody else... The love, the democracy, the floundering into lust, is a sort of by-play. The essential American soul is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer. It has never yet melted.”

Hi JC - Thanks! Same here. Happy reading!
matt i.

Michele, thank you so much. You've been such a great supporter of my work since we met here on GR. I can't thank you enough!
And I'm so glad you enjoyed Blueblood...the story came really easily to me (maybe too easy. The third book, Signs, has been more of a struggle). Here's hoping the others in the series keep flowing!
Happy holidays and I'll tak to you soon!
Matt

Hi Melissa - No problem. I'm getting almost overwhelmed by my GR notifications and messages...time to start "digesting" and paring down some lists. :)
Thanks for your well-wishes and thanks also for picking up A Reason to Live. I hope you enjoy it (and Blueblood).
cheers,
matt

Thank you very much for the friend invite! I've had "A Reason To Live" in my sites. Looking forward to checking it and your others all out! Have an awesome night..."
Hi Melissa - Thanks so much for the kind words! I'm somewhat new to Goodreads (joined in 2007, but almost totally inactive until a few months ago) and have met a ton of great people and readers here. It's been wonderful encouragement to this indie writer. :)
I'll see you around GR!
matt
p.s. I'll be holding more Giveaways and contests soon, as I hope to release Blueblood , the sequel to A Reason to Live , in early-mid August. I'll let all my GR friends know first!

Hi Jessica - Thanks so much! I hope you enjoy them w..."
I enjoyed Stephen King's On Writing, it was a book I read quite some time ago, that was leant to me by my cousin. I really enjoyed reading about the process he goes through when writing, and all that he went through in order to get noticed in the world of writers. Definitely one I should read again!

Hi Jessica - Thanks so much! I hope you enjoy them when you get a chance to read them. I should be holding another giveaway for A Reason to Live soon...I'll be pulling for you to win!
BTW, what did you think of Stephen King's On Writing?
Best,
Matt

You're welcome, and thank you, as well! Hope to bump into you around GR!

Hey Catie! Thanks for friending me back. You're the first person in a *while* I've met that's read 'Stars...how cool! I wish Bester had written more...two good novels and that's about it.
And you live in Woodbridge! Hope traffic on 95/495 isn't getting you down...I live in Alexandria and it can be a pain. Thank god for books :)
ciao, matt
