Geared to writing would be: do some background research (my favorite was on Prohibition for "Rekindling Motives"); tell myself I only have to write 100 words--and then do it; look at my bank account and ask myself if I want it to stay at that level. Usually one of these three will light a fire under my buns.(less)

Seeing a Story from Each Character's Perspective

If I had to pick one thing that has made a difference in my writing it would be seeing a story from each character's perspective. It puts the pieces into a cohesive puzzle.

That doesn't mean expressing all that to the reader. They may only need to know what the protagonist shows them. However the protagonist operates in a world with other people, and they march to their own drummers.

Description: Jolie appraises the vacant Tillotson-Fisher house and finds the skeleton of Richard Tillotson hidden in an antique attic wardrobe. He vanished just after his sister married his business partner in 1929. Jolie sees a link to the Fisher family's Prohibition era business and works with friends Scoobie and Ramona to gather clues from old photo albums and ledgers. The photo albums lead her to Mary Doris Milner, Richard's girlfriend, who has fond memories of him and is certain of who murdered him. But, there was nothing to link her suspect to the murder then, and he's long dead himself. The present day murder of Mary Doris tells Jolie and Scoobie they are on the right track. Did the secret she kept all these years finally kill her? Between running the food pantry at Christmas time and escaping a burning building, Jolie and Scoobie hope to figure out who the modern killer is before someone else gets hurt.

"Absolutely Delightful

As usual, a wonderful story by Elaine Orr. While the mystery is intriguing, it is Ms Orr's ability to thoroughly capture the small moments in life that make her writing come so vividly alive.
