arianna You know i've already read about half of these... there's got ot be more! :)

message 2: by Kelly (new)

Kelly I agree Arianna, with me having no life at all, I have all the time in the world to pour through books (even if I cannot for my skin remember what they were about).

message 3: by Michele (new)

Michele Milliner Everybody starts Ulysses, but do they actually finish it?

message 4: by Courtney (new)

Courtney For those of you who put slaughter-house five on the list. If you never get to any of the others, get to that one! It's quick and easy and amazing. The best book EVER! And I don't say things like that lightly.

message 5: by Meredith (new)

Meredith I finished Ulysses! My senior seminar in college was on James Joyce, and we spent most of the semester on it. I still haven't been able to muscle my way through Finnegans Wake, though.

message 6: by Pollyanna (new)

Pollyanna I've got quite a few of these at home, I really should read them now, at least I have finally read 1984 and To Kill a Mockingbird.

message 7: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Meredith- Congrats! I am ashamed to say that I have never finished this particular novel.

message 8: by Meredith (new)

Meredith Thanks, Kel! It would never have been possible if I hadn't had a great professor to guide us through it! It's a tough read.

message 9: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin Stokes love this list!

message 10: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Jul 11, 2010 09:02AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Well, I didn't vote for any Hemingway because I think I've read most of it.

You could try voting for him. The form to add books to the list is at the right-hand side of the page.

message 11: by Tanya (new)

Tanya Are we supposed to look at this list so that if authors aren't near the top it's becuase people have already read them?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Tanya wrote: "Are we supposed to look at this list so that if authors aren't near the top it's because people have already read them?"

That's what I did - not vote for the authors I've read.

message 13: by Frank (new)

Frank R Michele wrote: "Everybody starts Ulysses, but do they actually finish it?"

yes

message 14: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Feb 16, 2011 10:24AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I guess more people have read Dickens?

My own theory is that if it hasn't been out at least 20 years you don't really know if it's a classic.

message 15: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn Frank wrote: "Michele wrote: "Everybody starts Ulysses, but do they actually finish it?"

Yes, yes I did,.... yes.

message 16: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn Lady Alice wrote: "It was probably easy for you Thom since I am sure you speed read."

Not so. I read slow but have been at it for 60 years.

message 17: by Tajma (new)

Tajma Lady Alice wrote: "Michele wrote: "Everybody starts Ulysses, but do they actually finish it?"

LOL! thanks for this laugh.....I have never even started it.

So many of these just bog me down"

message 18: by Tajma (new)

Tajma I've started it about five times since high school and never get past the first chapter!

message 19: by David (new)

David Sometimes life is too short to slog through a 'classic'. If I'm not enjoying a book after 100 pages in, I abandon it. Ulysses I have tried twice and had to give up on. It hasn't left a hole in my existance. ;-)

message 20: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn I read through War and Peace, it was hard! It was really, really boring at times, but I read it without cheating once! =D

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks to goodreads I was just able to remove 6 of them!

message 22: by PinkPanthress (last edited Apr 20, 2013 11:15AM) (new)

PinkPanthress So far this is one of my favourite Lists!!!

message 23: by Phillip (new)

Phillip Ur wrote: "you motherfuckers. how are there 61 books before hemingway is listed. 61 books! the one that stands out to me most is wicked at #60. what...the...fuck."

The whole list gets a bit wonky towards the end. Stephanie Meyer? I'd venture to say that this list has a few errors in judgment.

message 24: by Phillip (new)

Phillip Okay. So, lets just get THIS out of the way: Take all the Stephanie Meyer off and put in A Picture of Dorian Gray and (inplace of the horrific Twilight series in particular) The Dark Tower by Stephen King.

message 25: by Phillip (new)

Phillip Carolyn wrote: "I read through War and Peace, it was hard! It was really, really boring at times, but I read it without cheating once! =D"

I never found it boring. Maybe I was just really interested in the social engagement of Russian society. Anyways, agree to disagree.

message 26: by Tytti (last edited Dec 08, 2013 03:38PM) (new)

Tytti I have so many of these I don't know where to start. Although one of them is a book I won't even think about reading even though it was chosed as the best Finnish book written during the first 75 years of independence in 1992. It hasn't been translated so here is the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alastalo... For example choosing a pipe takes over 70 pages, so hmmm... And the sixth chapter is called "you can easily skip this chapter because in it happens no more than in any other chapter". But you could then get a t-shirt that says "I have read Alastalon salissa". :D

message 27: by BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) (last edited Jan 29, 2017 03:34AM) (new)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) I came across this list again, by accident more or less, and managed to delete 10 of my votes because I've read the books. Which means there's room for 10 more titles I'd really like to read:-)

message 28: by BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) (last edited Feb 05, 2017 01:01AM) (new)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Check out Books I Intend to Read before I Die. Ideal for anyone who thinks 100 votes isn't nearly enough :-)

message 29: by Tim (last edited May 10, 2021 05:16AM) (new)

Tim Butcher I was sorry to see just now my book, `Blood River’ vanish from this list. Apologies to the 90 odd members who voted for it. I am trying to work out where those votes went. We authors are rightly not allowed to put our own books on lists like this, nor can we vote for them. So, to the kind supporter who first put the book on this list, a particular apology. And to anyone who might help me better understand why the book was removed, please message me, privately if you prefer. I would love to avoid similar mistakes in the future and to learn if I have done anything wrong. With best wishes to all who make GoodReads an important hub for readers, writers and bibliophiles, author Tim Butcher
