September

[Genevieve]

As we head into September I thought we might want to listen to songs about this month.

September
Duration September 1, 2026 - February 28, 2027

Level 1: One task from each song.
Level 2: Two tasks from each song.

TASKS

1 "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire
"September" is a timeless disco-funk masterpiece by the American band Earth, Wind & Fire, originally released as a single on November 18, 1978. The entire song is framed as a recollection of a joyful romance. It uses the transition from late autumn/winter back to a warm autumn night to show how happy memories can bring warmth and happiness even during colder, darker times.
🍂 Read a book that has one of these words in the title Earth, Wind or Fire, or read a book published in November of any year or a book that is set in winter.

2 "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day
"Wake Me Up When September Ends" is an iconic 2004 rock ballad by the American band Green Day, written by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong as a deeply personal tribute to his father. His father passed away from cancer on September 1, 1982, when Armstrong was only 10 years old. The famous title comes from the exact words a heartbroken Armstrong told his mother when he locked himself in his room after the funeral.
🍂 Read a book with a green cover or where a character goes to a funeral or a character dies or has cancer.

3. "September Song" by Kurt Weill (and covered by artists like Willie Nelson and Frank Sinatra)
The song was originally written for the 1938 Broadway musical Knickerbocker Holiday. It was tailored specifically for actor Walter Huston, who played the aging, peg-legged governor Peter Stuyvesant. Huston requested a solo song, and because he had a limited vocal range, Weill and Anderson composed the haunting melody and poignant lyrics in just a few hours to match his gruff delivery.
🍂 Read a book tagged Holiday or with a character called either Walter or Peter, or with a character who is gruff. (Your interpretation).

4. September Gurls" by Big Star
"September Gurls" is a landmark power pop song written by frontman Alex Chilton and performed by the American rock band Big Star. Despite its bright, jangly guitars and soaring harmonies, the song carries a heavy dose of romantic longing and unrequited devotion. The song's title was inspired by three women in Chilton's life at the time including his ex-wife Suzi who all happened to be born in September.
🍂 Read a book with a MC who is divorced or a character who plays a guitar or where a character longs for someone.

5. See You in September" by The Happenings
"See You in September" is a classic pop song written by Sid Wayne and Sherman Edwards that became an iconic end-of-summer anthem. While first recorded by the Pittsburgh vocal group The Tempos in 1959, the most famous and successful version was released by The Happenings in June 1966.The bittersweet lyrics tell the story of two young lovers parting ways for summer vacation, with one expressing anxiety over losing the other to a "summer love".
🍂 Read a book set in Pennsylvania or a book with young lovers in it or set in summer.

6 "September Morn" by Neil Diamond
The song was co-written by Neil Diamond and Gilbert Bécaud, taking inspiration from Bécaud's less-romantic French track "C'est en septembre". Diamond transformed it into a haunting, nostalgic ballad about two ex-lovers reflecting on a magical night they shared.
🍂 Read a book where a character things of an ex lover or set in France or with the word diamond in the text (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #).

7 "The September of My Years" by Frank Sinatra
"The September of My Years" is a poignant, reflective song about aging, looking back on life, and accepting the autumn of one's existence. Written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn specifically for Frank Sinatra's 50th birthday album. The "September" in the title represents the transition from the vibrant summer of youth into the cooler, reflective autumn of old age.
🍂Read a book with a character called Sammy, Frank or Jimmy or read a book published in September of any year or where a character celebrates a birthday.

8. "September in the Rain" by Dinah Washington
"September in the Rain" is a famous jazz and pop standard written by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Al Dubin in 1937. While it was originally introduced by James Melton in the movie Melody for Two, it became a massive hit and a signature song for the legendary jazz singer Dinah Washington in 1961. A nostalgic love song about remembering a past romance during a rainy autumn
🍂 Read a book that is second in a series or a character called Harry, Al or Dinah or a scene that takes plane in the rain.

9. Pale September" by Fiona Apple
"Pale September" is a beautifully poetic song written and performed by American singer-songwriter Fiona Apple. It was released on July 23, 1996. Fiona Apple wrote the song about an ex-boyfriend. The lyrics detail a transition from a cold, guarded emotional state ("winter") to a safe, warm space brought on by a gentle lover.
🍂 Read a book published in July or any year or with the word apple in the text (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #) or where a character has a lover.

10. "It Might as Well Rain Until September" by Carole King
"It Might as Well Rain Until September" is a classic 1962 pop song written by the legendary songwriting team of Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Initially recorded by Carole King merely as a demo for singer Bobby Vee, her version was so spectacular that music publisher Don Kirshner released it as a single anyway. The song tells a sweet but sad story about missing someone deeply during the summer months. Even though the weather outside is beautiful and friends are enjoying beach picnics, the narrator stays locked away inside because their lover is far away.
🍂 Read a book where a character goes on a picnic or where a character is in a long distance relationship or with a beach on the cover.

11. "September Grass" by James Taylor
"September Grass" is most famously known as a beautifully nostalgic folk-rock song by singer-songwriter James Taylor. The song describes the peaceful transition from late summer to winter. It uses a "little patch of green" as a metaphor for finding comfort and intimacy in a massive, fast-moving world.
🍂 Read a book with grass on the cover or with an author called James or Taylor (Either first or last) or a little book (Under 200 pages).

12. "September When It Comes" by Rosanne Cash
"September When It Comes" is a moving country-folk song released in 2003 by singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash, featuring a powerful guest appearance by her legendary father, Johnny Cash. It holds deeply emotional significance because it was one of Johnny Cash's final studio recordings before he passed away on September 12, 2003. The song acts as a reflection on life, aging, and mortality.
🍂 Read a book with a character called Rosanne or Johnny or set in the country or where a character has a guest stay.

13 "September Love" by Kool & The Gang
"September Love" is a smooth, romantic R&B and funk ballad by Kool & The Gang, released on November 21, 1983. The lyrics tell a nostalgic story about two people looking back on a youthful, naive summer romance that faded away as time pulled them apart.
🍂 Read a book tagged Romance or a book published in November of any year or a couple who have a summer romance.

14. "One September Day" by Nina Simone
"One September Day" is a beautiful, melancholic jazz song recorded by the legendary singer and pianist Nina Simone. The song tells a bittersweet story about a romance that quickly bloomed and then ended just as fast, all within the span of a single day in September. Simone sings about how other memories might fade over time, but she will always remember that specific day.
🍂 Read a book that is a quick read or where a character listens to jazz (Give a partial sentence and page/loc #) or where the authors initials can be found in SIMONE.

15. "The Late September Dogs" by Melissa Etheridge
"The Late September Dogs" is a raw, emotional song about the painful end of a romantic relationship and the struggle to move on. Melissa Etheridge uses the change of seasons and howling dogs as metaphors for her own internal heartbreak and anxiety.
🍂 Read a book where the season is changing or where a character struggles to move on from something or with a dog on the cover.

3 "September Song" by Kurt Weill (and covered by artists like Willie Nelson and Frank Sinatra)

4 "September Gurls" by Big Star
"September Gurls" is a landmark power pop song written by frontman Alex Chilton and performed by the American rock band Big Star. Despite its bright, jangly guitars and soaring harmonies, the song carries a heavy dose of romantic longing and unrequited devotion. The song's title was inspired by three women in Chilton's life at the time including his ex-wife Suzi who all happened to be born in September.
🍂 Read a book with a MC who is divorced or a character who plays a guitar or where a character longs for someone.

5 "See You in September" by The Happenings
"See You in September" is a classic pop song written by Sid Wayne and Sherman Edwards that became an iconic end-of-summer anthem.

10 "It Might as Well Rain Until September" by Carole King
"It Might as Well Rain Until September" is a classic 1962 pop song written by the legendary songwriting team of Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Initially recorded by Carole King merely as a demo for singer Bobby Vee, her version was so spectacular that music publisher Don Kirshner released it as a single anyway. The song tells a sweet but sad story about missing someone deeply during the summer months. Even though the weather outside is beautiful and friends are enjoying beach picnics, the narrator stays locked away inside because their lover is far away.

13 "September Love" by Kool & The Gang
