🎸 Grammy-award-winning rock duo the Black Keys has steadily won increasing popular and critical recognition for their classic bluesy sounds and dynamic rhythms in the years following their 200¬2 debut, The Big Come Up. Growing up in the same neighborhood in Akron, Ohio, guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney did not officially form until 2001 after Auerbach was looking for assistance in making a demo. Even though they knew each other at an early age, they weren’t part of the same crowds, nor did they really become friends until high school when they were encouraged by their brothers to collaborate.

🎸 Before too long, the duo had started to grow a regional fan base and after recording a demo in Carney’s basement, they signed with independent label Alive to release their debut. Over the course of the next couple years, the duo signed with different labels, eventually attracting national attention. The Black Keys were brought to new audiences after opening for musicians such as Beck and Sleater Kinney. Their third album, Rubber Factory, a reference to the former Akron tire plant where they recorded the album, marked a turn towards alternative music and a focus on songwriting.

🎸 In an interview, Carney said that by the time the fifth album came around, he and Auerbach felt that they were ready to work with a producer because they couldn’t teach themselves anything more. So entered Brian Burton, also known as Danger Mouse. Several songs from the 2007 album, Attack & Release, which was also their first record to chart on the US Billboard 200, were picked up for commercials and television programs, further helping to make the band's music familiar to many new listeners. The band had some tension due to Carney’s now ex-wife, but the duo reconciled in 2009.

🎸 After a move to Nashville in 2010, The Black Keys released their next album, Brothers, which was their most successful to date, earning the number two spot on Rolling Stone’s best albums of 2010. Brothers showed a return to their roots with grittier blues and rock tracks, especially the songs "Tighten Up," “Howlin’ for You,” and "Next Girl." At the Grammys, they won three of the five awards they were nominated for, including Best Recording Packaging for the cover. They continued to gain exposure through song licensing and were Warner Bros Records’ most licensed band of the year. The video for “Howlin’ for You” was nominated for the 2011 MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video, and in 2014, the band donated the song rights to PETA for an animal adoption ad campaign.

🎸 Overwhelmed with the success and additional commitments and touring stops, in early 2011 the group cancelled concerts in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. The desire to record another album soon after Brothers also led to the decision. Carney said, "We could have waited another year or so, and milked the Brothers album and kept touring, but we like bands, and our favorite bands growing up and even today are bands that put out a lot of music and every album is different from the last.” In December of 2011, The Black Keys released El Camino their seventh album. The record draws from popular genres from the 1950s–1970s, including rock and roll, glam rock, rockabilly, surf rock, and soul. The band cited several retro acts as musical influences on the album, including the Clash, the Cramps, T. Rex, Ramones, the Beatles, and the Cars. The single, “Lonely Boy” made it to the number 2 spot on the Billboard 200, their highest chart position to date.

🎸 El Camino put The Black Keys back at the 2013 Grammys with a nomination for Album of the Year and a win for the Best Rock Album. They also made several appearances on late-night television programs, including Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. After a five year hiatus, in 2019, they released a new album titled Let’s Rock and a North American tour with Modest Mouse. The band is still creating and in April 2021, the band announced via the Lonely Boys and Girls fan club that there were releasing 11 covers of hill country blues songs on an album titled Delta Kream.
