My main advice is to keep writing. 4DQ was the 3rd manuscript I tried getting an agent with and while it was difficult shelving my other two manuscripts, I'm so glad that 4DQ was my debut.

It also helps knowing what's already out there. I wrote 4DQ to stand out in a crowded YA fantasy market, combining two of my favourite things: fantasy and murder mysteries. While you shouldn't write to trends, it's good to know what is selling and how your book will fit in, and stand out, on the shelves.

Query letters should hook the reader, much like the back of a book. How is your story different from others of its genre. Be specific but not too convoluted (if fantasy or sci fi). Share it with friends and then get them to tell you what the book is about.

All the best with your writing journey! :)(less)
