Riding the Highways: WA Olympic Loop Highway 101

The Olympic Peninsula Loop Drive in Washington is one of the most scenic drives along the West Coast.

Located across Puget Sound from Seattle, Highway 101 loops around the peninsula through dense evergreen forests and past wild coastal bluffs. The area is protected from development by the Olympic National Park, but there is much to see beyond the national park. Let’s see what this road trip has to offer!

Here's how it work:
The number of miles traveled from place to place will be the numbers you use to choose your books. You can mix and match one of the below ways to complete the task but please indicate in each post which option you are using.

1. Olympic Loop Starting Point: Olympia
Olympia is the capitol of Washington and the state capital building is definitely worth visiting. Located on a beautiful campus beside the Capitol Lake, the grounds are beautiful year-round and are a popular location for photoshoots. The historic building has beautiful architecture and is built from marble from five countries. The Tiffany chandeliers inside the building are absolutely stunning.

2. Drive 21 Miles from Olympia to Shelton
Shelton lies on the Hammersley Inlet and its landscape is dominated by impressive views of the water, mountains and colossal cedar, spruce, and fir trees. Resident and transient orcas and humpback whales find their way to these waters several times each year to the delight of onlookers. This well-equipped town is a great place to stock up on staples and grab a meal. Check out the quaint shops that line Railroad Avenue in the center of town.

3. Drive 16 Miles from Shelton to Hoodsport
Hoodsport is a lovely town that hugs the coast of the Hood Canal. First settled by ship captain G. K. Robbins who logged and farmed this area's wealth of natural resources, today his legacy lives
on in Hama Hama Oyster Company, owned and operated by his descendants and an obligatory stop on any oyster lover's journey. Nearby, among plumose anemones, wolf eels, and giant pacific octopus, SCUBA enthusiasts from all over the world discover the diving mecca near Sund Rock.

4. Drive 4 Miles from Hoodsport to Lake Cushman
Peaceful Lake Cushman offers a year-round open season but it has “classic summer day” written all over it. If you care for a swim, stop at Skokomish Park Beach to get access to the water for day-use. Canoes and kayaks are also available to rent. Meanwhile, anglers cast for the bass, trout, and salmon that swim in the lake. There’s also golf and disk golf just a few miles down the road.

5. Drive 13 Miles from Lake Cushman to Staircase
We will be visiting several sections of Olympic National Park and the Staircase Area is the least visited section, which is perfect for visitors who love quiet and dreamy walks in a lush rainforest filled with green ferns, mossy trees and a river full of bubbling rapids. The most popular hikes include the Rapids Loop, The North Fork Loop, and the Shady Lane Trail that leads back to Lake Cushman. Camping is available, so if you end up loving this stop, consider staying overnight.

6. Drive 30 Miles from Staircase to Dosewallips State Park
This lovely park includes both a river and the ocean and is a popular clamming site. There are also five miles of loop trails which take you through woods, marsh and beach. An elk herd lives nearby and is known to wander the marsh, so if you are lucky you can have an authentic wildlife experience. Berry picking is also a favorite pastime here – depending on the season you can enjoy blackberries, red and blue huckleberries or sample some Washington grapes. There are camping facilities that include campsites and permanent tent cabins.

7. Drive 37 Miles from Dosewallips State Park to Port Townsend
We head north to the charming Victorian
seaport of Port Townsend, where you can stroll the unique shops lining its main street. They include Whistle Stop Toys, The Writers’ Workshoppe and several lovely art galleries. The town’s Victorian architecture signify the wealth that once flooded into the port in the early 1900s. Its rich history can be relived in a visit to Fort Worden State Park, built during World War II to protect the straits of Juan de Fuca and the entrance to Puget Sound. It is fun seeing the bunkers and walking through its underground tunnels. The point Wilson Lighthouse is also located inside the park and is very photogenic.

8. Drive 31 Miles from Port Townsend to Sequim
Heading out of Port Townsend to Sequim,
you may think you’ve been transported to the South of France. Along the roadside farms exploding with purple blooms and the intoxicating scent of lavender abounds. Stop at one of the farms to get your first taste of the herb that this part of the Peninsula is wild about. Sequim itself has a charming downtown with plenty of shops to visit (many with signature lavender themed products). A favorite eatery is Salty Girl Seafood Co. - a no frills, "order at the counter" spot for local seafood. The shrimp melt is popular with their signature cocktail: the Sake Slush, a mix of cucumber vodka and sake on shaved ice. Yum!!

9. Drive 6 Miles from Sequim to Dungeness Spit
Just outside Sequim, you can stretch your legs along the 5.5 mile Dungeness Spit. As the longest natural sand spit in the U.S., it’s a fascinating geologic formation, though you mostly look out across the Strait of Juan de Fuca toward Canada and the San Juan Islands. If you plan ahead, you can do one of the daily tours at the New Dungeness Lighthouse. Keep your eyes open along the way for birds and other wildlife, since this area is also a wildlife preserve.

10. Drive 17 Miles from Dungeness Spit to Port Angeles
Port Angeles is the other major town you’ll pass through in the Olympic Peninsula, home to almost 20,000 people. As its name suggests, it is a port town, and has ferry service to Victoria, British Colombia (if you want to take a side trip). Explore PA’s historic downtown area, shop in the boutiques, sample wine at the wineries or eat at one of the restaurants near the waterfront. The highlight here is the Feiro Marine Life Center where you can learn about the local water species. They also have a hands-on tide pool exhibit that is especially fun for the kids.

11. Drive 20 Miles from Port Angeles to Hurricane Ridge
Named for its intense gales and winds, Hurricane Ridge is the most easily accessed mountain area within Olympic National Park. In clear weather, fantastic views that include Mount Olympus, can be enjoyed throughout the year. The Visitor Center is a great place to stop for brochures, maps, and tips regarding your visit. There are a number of hiking trails, from ridgetop traverses to steep trails that descend to sub-alpine lakes and valleys. In spring, wildflowers abound in the meadows and during the winter months, snow enthusiasts enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and sledding in the area. But check road conditions before departing if you are visiting during the winter.

12. Drive 39 Miles from Hurricane Ridge to Lake Crescent
This is my favorite stop on the trip and one of my all-time favorite happy places. Crescent lake is one of the park’s most beautiful lakes. Strikingly clear due to the lack of nitrogen in the water, this crescent-shaped lake is extremely deep – 624 feet at its deepest. In the mornings, mist hovers over the water and in the evenings, the sun paints the water gold. The delightful lodge on its banks was built in 1915 and includes a stone fireplace, great restaurant and bar and a cozy sun porch overlooking the lake. Rent a kayak for a day on the water, jump off the pier for an afternoon swim, or just relax in an Adirondack chair with a good book. Believe me, it’s a little slice of paradise!

13. Drive 14 Miles from Lake Crescent to Salmon Cascades & Ancient Grove Trail
A great place to stop if you are traveling during the salmon spawn (usually during September-November) is the Salmon Cascades on Sol Duc Hot Spring Rd. Its viewing platform is one of the best places to view a salmon run. Watching the salmon jump their way upstream is quite fascinating. Just down from the viewpoint is the 0.6 mile self-guided nature trail loop through the Ancient Groves, an old-growth forest which is a quiet jaunt for capturing the area’s beauty and for stretching your legs!

14. Drive 5 Miles from Salmon Cascades to Sol Duc Hot Springs
Continue up the road to the Sol
Duc Hot Springs Resort, which offers mineral hot springs that you can soak in for a small fee. The resort also offers a restaurant, gift shop and lodging options. If you pass on the resort offerings, don’t miss the beautiful hike to Sol Duc Falls that starts near the parking lot of the resort. This 1.6 mile round trip hike takes you through a temperate rainforest to an overlook where you can watch the falls tumble 50 feet into the slot canyon below. In the autumn rainy season and early spring runoff these falls can be spectacular as they boom beneath your feet.

15. Drive 64 Miles from Sol Duc Hot Springs to Neah Bay
For a worthy detour,
let’s take a side trip off Highway 101 to Neah Bay and Cape Flattery. The bay has some beautiful pristine beaches and is also home to the Makah Indian Reservation. Their Makah Cultural and Research Center gives a fascinating look into their traditions and history. And be sure to take the 1.5 mile round trip Cape Flattery trail. It’s a gorgeous boardwalk hike through the forest to impressive coastal views AND you can boast that you made it to the northwestern-most point in the contiguous United States.

16. Drive 49 Miles from Neah Bay to Forks
Heading back to the 101 we continue south into Forks - best known as the setting for the Twilight series. A Twilight walking tour to see many locales mentioned in the books is a must for fans. But the town was originally settled around the wood logging industry, so be sure to check out the Forks Timber Museum to learn about its history "pre-Twilight". Another unique attraction is John’s Beachcombing Museum. This private collection of items that has washed up on the beaches of Washington is diverse and quite interesting.

17. Drive 15 Miles from Forks to La Push
La Push is a village that lies at the mouth of the Quillayute River, surrounded by Olympic National Park. It’s known for its wild Pacific beaches. First Beach (yes that it its name) is known for its huge waves. Forested trails lead to Second and Third beaches, where birds gather on offshore rock formations. Rialto Beach is particularly beautiful and moody, with bare driftwood and a constant fog to set the mood. If you feel a little adventurous, hike Hole-In-The-Wall trail (4 miles round trip) to a natural tunnel-like formation and some impressive tide pools.

18. Drive 39 Miles from La Push to Hoh Rainforest
We head back into the National Park today to
Hoh Rainforest -a place where legends are made. The moss covered trees grow dense and tall with some giants towering at 300 feet. The sunlight can barely penetrate through the canopy of the evergreen trees. The air is always humid, foggy, and misty and the area gets over 14 feet of rain a year making it one of the rainiest places in the country. This unique set of climatic conditions has led UNESCO to designate Hoh Rainforest as a World Heritage Site. Grab a raincoat and experience it first hand by meandering through the Hall of Mosses and Spruce Nature Trails. Keep your eyes
open for Roosevelt Elk and the banana slugs that can grow up to 10 inches long.

19. Drive 25 Miles from Hoh Rainforest to Ruby Beach
We travel south to Ruby Beach which is also considered part of the National Park. The rocky beach has beautiful sea stack formations and is very photogenic; however, you must hike a short, kid friendly trail to reach it. On the beach you can find driftwood, shells, and colorful pebbles. If you visit at low tide, you can also find tide pools where you can spot sea anemones, crabs, barnacles, and starfish. The beach is especially breathtaking just before or after sunset and during winter when a thick fog blankets the area.

20. Drive 8 Miles from Ruby Beach to Kalaloch Tree of Life
The Kalaloch Tree of Life, is a unique phenomenon of a tree growing right over an eroding river bed. As the crevasse gets wider, the tree stretches its roots on either side, suspending itself in mid-air, going against all the rules of science and biology. Since there is no logical explanation for
why it hasn't toppled over yet, many say that “magical powers” must be involved.
Not knowing how long this iconic Pacific Northwest landmark will continue to “hang on”, I think it is a worthy stop on our trip. The tree is easily accessible, requiring only
a minimal hike.

21. Drive 32 Miles from Kalaloch Tree of Life to Lake Quinault
Lake Quinault is located in the glacier-carved Quinault Valley, also known as the "Valley of the Giants." Here you will find the largest Sitka Spruce tree in the world, along with other nationally recognized giants of Hemlock, Douglas Fir and the mighty Western Red Cedar. There are miles of trails to explore, and an array of water activities are easily accessible from the many campgrounds and resorts around the lake and surrounding rain forest. The historic Lake Quinault Lodge is a great place to hang out with its welcoming “living room” complete with a stone fireplace, luxurious leather lounges, vintage photographs and lodge memorabilia – all creating a lovely ambiance.

22. Drive the 31 Mile Lake Quinault Loop Drive

For a closer look into this beautiful valley you can take the 31 mile loop drive which circles around the lake, following the Quinault River and even enters into the National Park for a few miles. You will get fantastic views of the surrounding mountains, get up-close to the giant trees, see numerous waterfalls and open meadows where elk graze, and get access to the many trailheads available for hikers. A couple easier, family centered trails that are a must, would be the Rain Forest Nature Trail, Quinault Big Cedar Trail and Trail of the Giants. The July Creek Picnic Area is the perfect place to stop for lunch and offers the best photo opportunities of the lake.

23. Drive 55 Miles from Lake Quinault to Aberdeen
If you’re a Nirvana fan, you may have heard of the small town of Aberdeen. Home to Kurt Cobain in his youth, the town is proud of and holds many memories of the late singer. The town's walking tour includes Cobain’s childhood home and the memorial park established in his honor. But music history is not its only claim to fame. Stroll down to the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport to see the two tall ship replicas that were built here in Aberdeen: Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain. The “Lady” has appeared in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, and the TV show Once Upon a Time. Tour the vessels or sign up for an Adventure or Evening Sail to experience a taste of history on the open seas.

24. Drive 21 Miles from Aberdeen to Westport

We have one more side trip to take before completing our loop back to Olympia. The seaport town of Westport is a popular fishing destination but is also home to the Grays Harbor Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in the state and third tallest on the west coast. For a nominal $5 fee, you can climb the spiral staircase consisting of 135 steps, all the way to the top to see the amazing views. Then head to the town’s Westport Maritime Museum, located in the historic Coast Guard Station which dates back to 1929. It has some amazing exhibits including some fascinating whale skeletons. End your trip here with some fresh local shellfish bought from one of the many seafood markets at the marina. Highway 101 will take you back to Olympia to complete our trip.
