A tournament in Vegas means gambling, archery… and murder? The last thing Di, her roommate Mary, and Great Dane Moo expect when they arrive in Sin City is to be swept up in another investigation. But when friend Loggin fears he might be the next victim, the competition takes a back seat to finding a killer. A wholesome cozy murder for every sleuth in the family This is the fifth book in the Target Practice Mysteries series.
Nikki Haverstock is a writer who lives on a cattle ranch high in the Rocky Mountains. She has studied comedy writing at Second City and has published 6 cozy mysteries that are heavy on the humor.
Before fleeing the city, she hosted a competitive archery reality show, traveled the world to study volcanoes, taught archery and computer science at a university and now works on her family’s ranch herding cattle. Nikki has more college degrees than she has sense and hopefully one day she will put one to work.
Nikki likes to write comedy pieces that focus on the everyday humor of one-uppers, annoying family members and strange behavior of the ultra-rich. She tried stand up but the cattle weren’t impressed.
This book in the Target Practice series is set in Las Vegas at a tournament. This time one of Di and Mary's friends, Loggin, feels threatened due to a couple of accidents which have happened since he has arrived. Di and Mary, with help from Moo, must figure out who is behind the mischief to keep their friend safe. I love that I learn something new about the sport of archery every time that I read a book in this series.
Book five in the series is as much fun, or perhaps more, than the previous four! Di and her friends are out to solve another mystery – this time – is there a plot against the male pro archers and if so just what is it and who is behind it.
Di is growing as a character. She has more responsibilities at work, is improving her archery skills and has great friends that surround her – oh – and Moo the Great Dane is there for her no matter what. Her friends have their ups and downs, there is a mystery to solve, more than one person dies and there is romance in the air.
Great fun for every one of every age in this cozy murder mystery! Thank you to the author for the ARC to read for an honest review.
Another wonderful mystery from Niki haverstock. Di is back and sleuthing again while competing in an archery tournament in Vegas I loved it so much, great characters especially Moo, good mystery and just a great enjoyable read
For anyone interested in sports that are seldom in the public eye then I cannot recommend this series highly enough. Like the previous 4 novels this one is set amongst the highly competitive world of archery target shooting. This time the focus is on a huge annual competition taking place in Las Vegas and Di, Mary, Liam and of course Moo pluys the others working or training at the sports centre are all in attendance. This starts with a frantic text asking when they are dur to arrive in Vegas as someone has just tried to kill the sender. When they arrive it is to discover that someone has been killed in a hit and run with several others injured and one of those is positive that it was no accident, it was a case of attempted murder. The story focuses on the investigation combined with protection for one of the archers while also giving an idea of what is involved at a top flight target archery competition. If you are new to the sport of archery and have any interest then I recommend that you read the other 4 books as well, they can be read as stand alone books but each one will introduce you to more and more of this fascinating sport. As a spectator to archery competitions, although not the modern target shooting which is full of gadgetry but the mediaeval shooting at butts or other targets using only a plain bow, these books have been an eyeropener to the modern sport. I am not sure it would be for me, or my husband and daughter who are the archers in our family, but I can appreciate the hard work and practice that is put into a sport that seldom features in the news or on television. If you have no real interest in archery but want a book that is good clean reading set in a world that is different to the normal one of cozy mysteries - mainly based around the food industry or the paranormal - then these books are for you. A must for archery fans but equally a must for those wanting a book set in a different sphere to most.
Moo is still my fav character...but I'm surprised at how much he tags along, esp to a tournament in a casino. Plus, why didn't he fly with Liam instead of being cooped up in the car for days?
Anyway, Di and Mary, wanna-be sleuths, are at it again when their friend Loggin believes someone is targeting not just him but most of the men's competitors in the Vegas tourney. Who's behind it? And will Di and Mary have time to sleuth around between their turns in the competition?
I like that Haverstock includes Di's developing role in the Westmound family of companies. Seems like each story, she gets a bit more of a role, and in this one, speaking her mind (albeit reluctantly and clearly on a subject she hasn't even researched) pays off. It'll be interesting to see how her new role evolves.
Another great cozy mystery from a fabulous author. I love how this series has something for everyone- murder mystery, comic relief, and some romance! It is always exciting to see what Di and her fellow friends are up to in the world or archery. Of course, Moo is back as her trusty companion! This dog is so adorable! This tournament had someone looking to get rid of the competition. There were twists that kept coming. Many different suspects with motive. It was a fun read for the summer.
Sometimes a book can stand on its own with a strong plot and enough historical background to inform the first-time reader of previous significant events. I would say that this book is not one of them. However, for the reader of the previous books this is a well-written continuation. While short, it also serves as a lead-in to the next book in the series.
Fabulous! If what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas then the girls wouldn't be hot footing through the suspects to find the killer before a friend ends up dead. Great story with multiple suspects and motives. Get on your sleuthing hats for another action packed adventure.
Rigging an archery tournament is the storyline of this mystery. There are suspicious injuries and deaths of contestants and just a touch of romance. Very fast read.
You have to love Moo ( see I listed the dog first as I am a dog lover) and the gang in this fast paced story. When Mary and Di's friend Loggin thinks he maybe the next person to be killed, then Mary and Di need to pick up the pace and figure out who the murder is. Love these characters!
Amazingly beautiful writing. This author allows the reader to see the the archery tournament as if we were actually there. Exciting read with relationship issues, financial questions and physical activity all rolled up into a very interesting story!
Archery is not a sport that is often used as a portion of the plot in a book. This plot is developed so that you not only get a great story, but you also learn something of the sport. And, there is even a bit of romance thrown in.
A well orchestrated and fast paced storey line in the truest form of cozey mysterys. An amazing cast of caracters so diverse in in nature yet bonded in one goal in interest. A definite read for those who also enjoy sports as well as reading a great cozey mystery.
This was a great book to read, fast paced with great characters and good interaction between them. It will keep you ones till the end and wanting more.
I wasn't sure of this book at first, it was a bit up and down, I was pleased I finished the book and I have to say I enjoyed the way it was written. I look forward to her next book.
Death in the Casino is the fifth book in Nikki Haverstock’s Target Practice Mysteries series. I found this book to be even paced and entertaining. It’s a fun read with an intriguing mystery, and just the right touch of humor and a blossoming romance. The storyline is well written, flows smoothly, and the characters are well developed, likeable, and relatable. I have enjoyed reading this series and learning about competitive archery. I would recommend the Target Practice Mystery series to readers who enjoy a good, clean, and cozy mystery.
Di, Mary, and other representatives of Westmound Center for Competitive Shooting Sports are in Las Vegas for the Casino Cup, the first archery tournament of the year. They all receive a text message from Loggin, one of their co-workers and a competitor in the tournament, saying someone is trying to kill him. When they find him hiding out in a truck in the casino’s parking lot, Loggin tells them someone tried to run him down last night, several competitors had their drinks doped, one competitor was hit by the same van and later died, and that many of the competitors were withdrawing from the competition. Amateur sleuths, Di and Mary, start their own investigation when it looks like someone may be targeting the entire pro men’s compound division.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
