The 100 Most Popular Young Adult Books on Goodreads

Whether it’s magic schools, dystopias, paranormal love stories, or contemporary explorations of important real-life issues, young adult books are known to create long-lasting publishing trends and to produce passionate feelings in their fans of all ages.
For this year’s YA week, we set off to discover Goodreads members’ all-time favorite young adult reads. We started by focusing on titles that have been added the most to Goodreads members’ shelves. Then we narrowed down our search to books with at least a four star–average rating and sorted by total reviews. Finally, given how prolific some YA authors are (looking at you, Cassandra Clare and Sarah J. Maas!), we also selected only the first book in a series.
So without further ado, we present the 100 Most Popular YA Books on Goodreads, ranked by total reviews per book. How many have you read? Tell us in the comments!

Jason Reynolds' Long Way Down is categorized as YA ??? I read it and wouldn't say that it is (not that it is a bad thing or anything). I seem to not understand how YA categorization works, can someone explain ?

While age of the MC is a criterion to determine the genre, its not always correct- like Sanderson's Mistborn whose MC is 16, and yet its an adult book. YA doesnt have grimdark/heavier topics in it, things which have trigger warnings assocaitated with them, but marketing strategies are such that they market adult/new adult books as YA, like Sarah J Mass' books. There are a lot of criterias for determining whether a book is YA or not.
I enjoyed these 2 popular YA books a lot. Unfortunately, both of them couldn't make it to this list because their average rating is a little under 4 but they are really good I'm sure most people will like them!Gone
by Michael Grant & 13 Reasons Why
by Jay Asher.
I've read more of the most popular books than I thought. The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix that Sabriel is the first book of is seriously underrated (partly because there's been several hiatuses between installments).I would also recommend several more YA books:
Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust
Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust
Lovely War by Julie Berry
Fly Girls by Sherri L. Smith
I have read just four from this list --- Harry Potter, Hunger Games, TFIOS, Looking for Alaska.Hoping to read few more this year.

I've read twelve books on this list. That honestly sounds about right to me. XD I was so happy to find The Book Thief high on this list! It's a wonderful book and I recommend all of Markus Zusak's books!
I've only read 15% of these books! What on earth am I doing? 😆 Mind you, 22% of them are on my Want-to-Read list, so...

Please explain someone!"I've heard a lot about this book, but never read it. I still need to add it to my to-reads. XD it sounds fun, though. I really want to!
I have read 39/100 of these. I would not call Red Rising a YA. Darrow is I think 15-16 in books one by book 2 he is an adult and by the most recent book he is 33. Just because Rand is 16-17 in Eye of the World doesn’t mean WoT is a YA series. 🤨
I've read 24 so far! There are 5 titles on that list that I will definitely read soon, and 12 others that I might give a chance someday.

you should definitely read six of crows or children of blood and bone! 😊
I have read like the first ten of these lol they are mostly pretty poular. I didn't know the ones as you went further down the list, though.

I will add these to my TBR!!
38/100. Not too bad, but I don't know if I agree with all the picks on this list and some of these books are more NA than YA, while some others we don't generally think of YA at all.

Tanya wrote: "What is NA??"It means New Adult. Basically books for readers in their late teens to early twenties.
I've read 45 of these and planning on several others soon! I would love to see a list of 100 best YA books written in the last 5 or 10 years though, that would also be great, since some of these are much older, and I want to read some new releases but don't want to go through each year individually
I have read 22 and have 8 more on my to read list. Have read the first four! ;) Harry Potter, Hunger Games, TFIOS and Divergent
I'm halfway through reading Steggie Belle & the Dream Warriors and I am loving it! It was recommended by LoveReading and I decided to give it a try. I definitely recommend it!
I’ve read 48/100. I honestly thought I had read more. I do have a lot. them as want to reads but I just haven’t gotten to them ( Cinder, ACOTAR etc). I agree that not everything on this list is YA but I understand it’s really hard to narrow down the criteria for this category. Poison Study for example is always shelved in bookstore under adult fantasy and Gayle Foreman’s Just One Day is usually in Romance beside Nicholas Spark and no where near the YA shelves. For the most part the list is pretty accurate.
Florence wrote: "What about 'A Good Girl's Guide to Murder' by Holly Jackson?"I love this one too! It should be on the list for sure.
