1. historical: Nefertiti by Michelle Moran - 07/12★★★ - the story and characterisation had striking similarities to Philippa Gregory's book, the ending was rushed and the most interesting part of the book was the author's note which left more questions than answers - like "why portray Mutnodjmet as happily married for the entire book, when in the author's note you say that another character becomes pharaoh later and she will be his queen????"
2. contemporary: Austenland by Shannon Hale - 07/15★★★★★ - i started this book with no expectations beyond the average chick-lit, but i ended up loving it, it was so easy to read, so engaging and funny, that time flew by and i found myself in the early hours of the morning with a finished book and a warm, happy feel
3. time-travel: The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers finished 07/03★★★ - a little bit confusing at times, pretty hard to get into, also a bit outdated
4. futuristic: Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron (Shades of Grey, #1)by Jasper Fforde - 07/05★★★★ - very very good read after you get past the first third of the book, can't wait for the sequel!
5. year 1983: Untamed by Nora Roberts - 07/08★★★ - didn't like the circus references, also i felt the romance lacked that certain "something"
6. urban: Salvation in Death (In Death, #27)by J.D. Robb - 07/22 ★★★★★ - a book in this series is always a hit with me, i love the police work, the futuristic world, the characters, and above all Eve and Roarke; it's been more than a year since i've started the series, and as i'm closing to the last ones i try to space them out, to preserve that feeling of anticipation when you know you're going to read a great book and reconnect with old friends and a familiar setting
7. rural: Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley - 07/14★★★ - last month i read Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast, which was the retelling of the same story by the same author, only written 20 years earlier, and which was wonderful... i hoped this book would not only compare but reflect the experience and maturity of 20 years of writing, but i'm afraid it felt way short in all aspects
8. off-planet: Dune (Dune Chronicles, #1)by Frank Herbert - 07/19★★★★ - i've read this book, and all the dune books 10 years ago and upon rereading i expected it to be a 5-star read, but it didn't blow me away this time...

MARTINA'S JULY CHALLENGE - OF TIME & SPACE - 7/10 COMPLETED

Just finished Time Transit by Kay Austin (★★★★). This is futuristic to present time travel romance and is 2nd in a series. Unfortunately, I didn't know this before reading Time Transit as the books are under different publishing houses (I think that's the term). The first book, Time Rogues is listed as a "Timeswept" book while this one is a "SHOMI" book. A third book, Time Fugue is coming out sometime soon and who knows how that'll be listed!

Still, I enjoyed the book. All the SHOMI books have been surprisingly good - most five stars. And while Time Transit is, IMO, a solid 4 stars, I had a hard time getting into it and found a lot of questions unanswered to give it a five star rating. For instance, WHY do the Time Rogues choose to be bald? And WHY is the futuristic community of The Core living underground? Maybe these were answered in the first book, but they really should have been re-addressed briefly in this one, too. I loved the visits to the assassinations of the past - Caesar, Lincoln, & JFK. I'm about 50/50 right now on whether I'll back up and read Time Rogues or not. Only time will tell (guffaw!).
