Martina the Book Fairy (book_fairy) | 442 comments MARTINA'S JULY CHALLENGE - OF TIME & SPACE - 4/10 COMPLETED

Ugh. Discovered that the one suggested website had an error in it's listing and Captain Jack's Woman was published in 1997, not 1977 (my birthyear) so I'm using it as my historical book instead since it takes place in Regency-era England.

Also finished Rebels & Lovers by Linnea Sinclair which I loved AS USUAL for my space category and Kissing Sin by Keri Arthur for my contemporary category, a series which I'm continuing to enjoy and really wish I'd discovered earlier.

1. HISTORICAL: Captain Jack's Woman by Stephanie Laurens - 7/5 - ★★★★
2. CONTEMPORARY: Kissing Sin (Riley Jensen, Guardian #2) by Keri Arthur - 7/9 - ★★★★★
3. FUTURISTIC:

Actually the rule is in Space or off planet. There are a few PNRs set on different worlds. All of Jayne Castle and Celta's Heartmate series by Robin D. Owens come to my mind. You might also check out what other people have listed in the category.

Some of J.D. Robb's In Death books have Roarke or Eve going 'off-planet' - don't know if that would count or not.

There's Orson Scott Card's 'Ender' series, altho the first one, Ender's Game, isn't a romance. I'm using the 3rd one, Xenocide, but I listen to these.

1. historical: Nefertiti by Michelle Moran - 07/12★★★ - the story and characterisation had striking similarities to Philippa Gregory's book, the ending was rushed and the most interesting part of the book was the author's note which left more questions than answers - like "why portray Mutnodjmet as happily married for the entire book, when in the author's note you say that another character becomes pharaoh later and she will be his queen????"
2. contemporary: Austenland by Shannon Hale
3. time-travel: The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers finished 07/03★★★ - a little bit confusing at times, pretty hard to get into, also a bit outdated
4. futuristic: Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron (Shades of Grey, #1)by Jasper Fforde - 07/05★★★★ - very very good read after you get past the first third of the book, can't wait for the sequel!
5. year 1983: Untamed by Nora Roberts - 07/08★★★ - didn't like the circus references, also i felt the romance lacked that certain "something"
6. urban: Salvation in Death (In Death, #27)by J.D. Robb
7. rural: Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley - 07/14★★★ - last month i read Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast, which was the retelling of the same story by the same author, only written 20 years earlier, and which was wonderful... i hoped this book would not only compare but reflect the experience and maturity of 20 years of writing, but i'm afraid it felt way short in all aspects
8. off-planet: Dune (Dune Chronicles, #1)by Frank Herbert
9. fantasy: The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1)by Terry Pratchett - 07/11★★★ - i liked it and will probably read the other Discworld books in the future (why 3 stars? i could not follow some of the more imaginative details)
10. country/city visited: UK - The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory - 07/08 - ★★★★ - a voluminous novel but engaging from the very first page

Ann Aguirre has a series set in space. The first book is Grimspace. Also Jayne Castle's Crystal series takes place on the planet Harmony so they would qualify.

Martina the Book Fairy (book_fairy) | 442 comments Marlon wrote: "I'm stumped for a book set in space. I don't think I've ever actually read a book set in space."

There's also all of Linnea Sinclair's books - they're romance set in space (and they're fabulous!). A lot of the "space opera" category books get pretty romantic, too - though they're usually categorized with sci-fi/fantasy. The authors that come to mind for that are Anne McCaffrey & Mercedes Lackey.

One of my very favorites is The Rowan by Anne McCaffrey, but she's got lots of series that would fit the bill.

1. historical: Nefertiti by Michelle Moran - 07/12★★★ - the story and characterisation had striking similarities to Philippa Gregory's book, the ending was rushed and the most interesting part of the book was the author's note which left more questions than answers - like "why portray Mutnodjmet as happily married for the entire book, when in the author's note you say that another character becomes pharaoh later and she will be his queen????"
2. contemporary: Austenland by Shannon Hale - 07/15★★★★★ - i started this book with no expectations beyond the average chick-lit, but i ended up loving it, it was so easy to read, so engaging and funny, that time flew by and i found myself in the early hours of the morning with a finished book and a warm, happy feel
3. time-travel: The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers finished 07/03★★★ - a little bit confusing at times, pretty hard to get into, also a bit outdated
4. futuristic: Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron (Shades of Grey, #1)by Jasper Fforde - 07/05★★★★ - very very good read after you get past the first third of the book, can't wait for the sequel!
5. year 1983: Untamed by Nora Roberts - 07/08★★★ - didn't like the circus references, also i felt the romance lacked that certain "something"
6. urban: Salvation in Death (In Death, #27)by J.D. Robb
7. rural: Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley - 07/14★★★ - last month i read Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast, which was the retelling of the same story by the same author, only written 20 years earlier, and which was wonderful... i hoped this book would not only compare but reflect the experience and maturity of 20 years of writing, but i'm afraid it felt way short in all aspects
8. off-planet: Dune (Dune Chronicles, #1)by Frank Herbert
9. fantasy: The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1)by Terry Pratchett - 07/11★★★ - i liked it and will probably read the other Discworld books in the future (why 3 stars? i could not follow some of the more imaginative details)
10. country/city visited: UK - The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory - 07/08 - ★★★★ - a voluminous novel but engaging from the very first page

ൠSinful (sinful) | 118 comments Michelle in Florida:
JULY 12TH DONE 10/10 :)

Of Time:
1. Historical: Sinful Yah. Not so much. Not for me. The writing was fine. The character development fine. It was all ok, but I didn't like how the story went. I still thinnk he is an ass and I don't like the ending. Not an HEA to me.

*2. Contemporary To All A Good Night Talk about a left field book to buy and read in July!! It was an anthology and frankly being novella's with a HEA it was just too unbelievable that in a couple of days 3 couples were proclaiming love. Good stories. Yes. But, they all seemed unrealistic. I think I like theses short novella love stories when it's a shifter who meets their destined mate. That makes sense- love in 24 hours when it is a chemical reaction makes sense. The rest was ridiculous. But I knew what I was buying didn't I. (*This is 1st of 3 non Paranormal element books)

3. Futuritic Bonds of Justice This was a great addition to the Psy Changeling series. If you haven't read them, start with book 1. Although each book is a HEA, there is a big political story that evolves in each book. A LOT continues to evolve with the Pure Psy fanatics working for the elimination of humans, changelings and fractured psy... Great new characters and even a few more I want to know more about. Max has a brother I hope we meet at some point

4. time-travel The Immortal Highlander You know, I am kinda glad I didn't read all these way back when. I think I did the 4 big ones you need for Fever and now I am a happy girl. First, I just love my highlanders. Ooooohh. Yummo. Second, I think I want to go crazy and read all the highlanders and fever books with a spiral taking copious notes before the final book comes out. I had no idea this is how bad ol D was changed from Fae to Mortal. Sittin on Cocoa beach as happy as a girl can be!

*5. 1967 At Wit's End (This is my 2nd of 3 allowed non paranormal element books) Mom had this book. Not in great shape at all because it is funny funny funny and has been abused through the years. Nice revisit. Funny how much is still appropriate and where times have changed. I would think it is out of print now. I know kindle and BN didn't have it as a download.

6. a major city (urban) Twice Bitten I just love this series. One of my favorite three and I am so sad that I have to wait another YEAR for a new one. UGG. That being said, there were points in this book where I wanted to chuck it against the wall. I read the first two in a fast day and this one took a long time. I kept walking away mad at a character. But, in the end I am ok for another year. Thank heavens.

7. a rural setting: The Mane Attraction LOVE Shelly Laurenston. Just love her humor and story telling. The characters are fun. The story is sexy, but they don't jump in bed and stay there. By the time they hook up I am drooling for it. And the plot is always great.

8. space or off-planet Born of Night I liked the book. I typically can't stand anything set in space or another planet, but this was typical Kenyon. Infact, it reeked of Acheron. SK makes no bones about her childhood and it creeps into this story with the same brutality that it did in Ash's story. 3AM and my guts are on the ground.

9. cannot be found in a current world map. (fantasy). Night Life decent UF. Actually, I did enjoy the story and the world/character building of this first in series. What I got sick of was her being so negative and grumpy all the time. Well. I think the last sentence was uplifting. Until then she needed a shot of happy or even snarky. I will read the next one, but if she is always like this I won't last for 5 books.

10. you have visited: The Mane Squeeze(New York City) Another Shelly Laurenston. Just love the relationships she develops between lovers, family, and friends. Yummy!

Others Read:
Voyeur Great story. Really loved the characters but normally I think m/f romantic erotica isn't any more tawdry than BDB. But this one is blush city. For a book titled voyeur, I sure felt like I needed to draw the shades and have a bit of privacy whilst I read. :)
Naughty Little Secret I did like this erotica book. It is a bit bizarre- just NOTHING like anything I have ever read along plot lines. And that is refreshing. But it did disturb me at times. It isn't dark- like rape or out there like menage- it is a romance- but how he romances her is just .... nothin' I would respond to.
Strip Search Follow up story to Bound and Determined. I enjoyed both.
An Invitation: Alayna's Training good story but I won't recommend it. This is about a BDSM experience and has an erotica disclaimer BUT there isn't ANY action the first 3/4 of the book. No joke- she is given books to read. She is very frustrated and as the buyer of a book billed as BDSM erotica, I was frustrated too. Seriously, have sex already. Heck TOUCH her!
A Table for Three Really loved this story about 2 best friends (heterosexuals) who share their women. This is how they find the love of their lives.
Passion Historical Romance written 5 years ago. It starts off with sex ends with sex and is filled with alot of pretty much vanilla sex. but she can sure write it hot! There is actually a good plot and good character build in all the sex too.
At the Dungeon Master's Hand , A Toy For Two ,Yes, My Mistress
These three books are about 3 friends who go to a BDSM club one one particular evening. Each book is each girls story and I believe the print version is bound as one book. Kindle sells them seperate. All together they make a really cutee fun and sex filled read. You find out how friend Dani set the whole thing up in her book which is the last one. Erotic romance.
Sex Magick I hated this short story. Spend a couple more bucks and get a full length novel. I think it took 10 minutes to read.
Beck And Call New author with strong ratings on Amazon. This is a wonderful semi erotic romance about a ceo and his assistant who are secretly in love with each other and how he makes his move. There is a strong corporate political plot running through it to keep things interesting. I really enjoyed it.
Belonging to Them One girl. Four men. Not usually what I would even consider but it was getting tons of stars all over so I gave it a whirl. Loved it. The town of Daly has a total of seven women so menage is kind of the norm. The heroines car stalls out here and she ends up finding her soul mate. It is more about the two of them than the four of them as the book summary leads you to believe.
Hanging On Follow up to Lean on Me. I didn't like Sophia in book one so I hadn't meant to read this. But I love her in her book and I love the man meant for her. This is the man of my dreams. Move over Roarke.

Sinful by Charlotte Featherstone To All A Good Night by Donna Kauffman Bonds of Justice (Psy-Changeling, #8) by Nalini Singh At Wit's End by Erma Bombeck Twice Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires, #3) by Chloe Neill The Mane Attraction (Pride, #3) by Shelly Laurenston Night Life (Nocturne City, #1) by Caitlin Kittredge The Mane Squeeze (Pride, #4) by Shelly Laurenston The Immortal Highlander (Highlander, #6) by Karen Marie Moning Born of Night (The League, #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon
