My fifth read is the only non-pnr for this challenge - The Pride of Lions. It was pretty darn good. It had a great romance, but it is obvious the author did a lot of research for that time period. Just a warning, even though it is a romance, the book does end with a cliff hanger. I am resuming it gets resolved in the next book, though.

MARTINA'S JULY CHALLENGE - OF TIME & SPACE - 5/10 COMPLETED

Just finished Cast In Secret (Elantra #3) by Michelle Sagara West. It's fantasy, not PNR, but there's some sexual tension between the main female character and a few of the males in the series, which I LOVE. Kaylin is a law officer in the multi-racial city of Elantra. Humans, the elf-like Barrani, the lion-like Leontine, the mind-reading Tha'alani, and humanoid Dragons all share the city. It's a world fraught with mystery, politics, and magic. I'm continuing to adore the series and will definitely be picking up the next book!

Hey Valorie, I just noticed that you have Down Home Zombie Blues listed for your space category. Unfortunately, DHZB is pretty much the ONLY Linnea Sinclair book that does NOT happen in space - it's pretty much exclusively on Earth. :-( If you have any of her other books, they should work for the category, though.

I really enjoyed Magic Bites. It had great characters and intriguing world building and mythology. Really look forward to the next in the series.

1. historical: Nefertiti by Michelle Moran - 07/12★★★ - the story and characterisation had striking similarities to Philippa Gregory's book, the ending was rushed and the most interesting part of the book was the author's note which left more questions than answers - like "why portray Mutnodjmet as happily married for the entire book, when in the author's note you say that another character becomes pharaoh later and she will be his queen????"
2. contemporary: Austenland by Shannon Hale - 07/15★★★★★ - i started this book with no expectations beyond the average chick-lit, but i ended up loving it, it was so easy to read, so engaging and funny, that time flew by and i found myself in the early hours of the morning with a finished book and a warm, happy feel
3. time-travel: The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers finished 07/03★★★ - a little bit confusing at times, pretty hard to get into, also a bit outdated
4. futuristic: Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron (Shades of Grey, #1)by Jasper Fforde - 07/05★★★★ - very very good read after you get past the first third of the book, can't wait for the sequel!
5. year 1983: Untamed by Nora Roberts - 07/08★★★ - didn't like the circus references, also i felt the romance lacked that certain "something"
6. urban: Salvation in Death (In Death, #27)by J.D. Robb
7. rural: Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley - 07/14★★★ - last month i read Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast, which was the retelling of the same story by the same author, only written 20 years earlier, and which was wonderful... i hoped this book would not only compare but reflect the experience and maturity of 20 years of writing, but i'm afraid it felt way short in all aspects
8. off-planet: Dune (Dune Chronicles, #1)by Frank Herbert - 07/19★★★★ - i've read this book, and all the dune books 10 years ago and upon rereading i expected it to be a 5-star read, but it didn't blow me away this time...
9. fantasy: The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1)by Terry Pratchett - 07/11★★★ - i liked it and will probably read the other Discworld books in the future (why 3 stars? i could not follow some of the more imaginative details)
10. country/city visited: UK - The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory - 07/08 - ★★★★ - a voluminous novel but engaging from the very first page

MARTINA'S JULY CHALLENGE - OF TIME & SPACE - 6/10 COMPLETED

Just finished A Spell for Chameleon (Magic of Xanth, #1) by Piers Anthony. I really enjoyed this book! It's fantasy - and possibly even YA fantasy based on writing style - and not PNR/UF, but there really wasn't much PNR/UF around back in 1977. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys light fantasy. However, I probably won't continue reading the series. Mostly this is b/c I simply prefer reading PNR/UF to fantasy, but also because there are THIRTY-FIVE books in the series! CRAZY!
