🎧ABBA was a Swedish pop group that formed in Stockholm in 1972. The original members were Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad. They each began their own individual musical careers before meeting and creating ABBA. Prior to 1972, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad had solo careers with moderate success. In the meantime, Björn Ulvaeus was the frontman for the Hootenanny Singers, a folk-skiffle group, and Benny Andersson was a member of the popular Swedish pop-rock group the Hep Stars. The two bands often crossed paths. The manager of the Hootenanny Singers saw potential between Ulvaeus and Andersson and encouraged them to collaborate. Around 1969, Lyngstad met Andersson and eventually they became a couple. In the same year, Fältskog and Ulvaeus met and started dating, eventually marrying in 1971.

🎧 In April 1970, the two couples went on holiday together to Cypress. They combined talents by performing on the beach for United Nations soldiers stationed on the island. They tried recording together for a project, but it received negative reviews, so they all went back to individual projects until 1971 when the couples started performing together again at festivals. Ulvaeus and Andersson kept songwriting and experimenting with their music, including featuring the women as the predominant vocals. They were known as Björn, Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid, but their manager was tired of the long name and started calling the group ABBA privately and publicly. Their big breakthrough came in 1974 with the Eurovision Song Contest.

🎧 ABBA had actually entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973, but didn’t qualify. They used the song “Ring, Ring” off their debut album, Ring, Ring. They decided to plan better and used the song “Waterloo” off their second album with the same title. They sang “Waterloo” in English this time and ended up winning the concert, and the song was a hit across multiple countries. The subsequent tour was a disappointment in terms of attendance and sales, but their success picked up again with the release of “Mamma Mia” in 1974. They released several other songs with moderate success in various countries, but their next breakthrough was in 1976 with the release of their compilation Greatest Hits, which included the song “Fernando”. Their fourth studio album, Arrival, had even more hits, including “Money, Money, Money,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” and “Dancing Queen.”

🎧 “Dancing Queen” helped solidify the band’s success. It reached number one in a number of countries, not only in loyal countries like Sweden, the UK, Germany and several other European countries, but it also reached number one in the US, Australia, France, the Soviet Union, Japan, Mexico and South Africa. Their fifth album, ABBA: The Album was released to coincide with ABBA: The Movie. The hit songs ”The Name of the Game,” and “Take a Chance on Me” were on the album. By 1978, ABBA was one of the biggest bands in the world. In early 1979, Ulvaeus and Fältskog announced they were divorcing, causing speculation regarding the future of the band. Ulvaeus and Fältskog had two children together. In 1981 Andersoon and Lyngstad announced they were also divorcing. Their last album from that era, The Visitors, was released in late 1981.

🎧 ABBA never officially announced the end of their group, but their last public performance was in 1982, until a reunion in 2016. Between 1982 and 2016 all four members worked on individual projects. In 1994, two Australian cult movies that featured ABBA’s music helped a resurgence of interest. In the 2000s, the band has come together for various events, including releasing another album, Voyage. They have won numerous awards and are considered one of the most popular and successful musical groups of all time, with album sales estimated to be between 150 million to 285 million sold worldwide. ABBA was also the first group from a non-English speaking country to achieve consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries. ABBA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

They tried recording together for a project, but it received negative reviews, so they all went back to individual projects until 1971 when the couples started performing together again at festivals. Ulvaeus and Andersson kept songwriting and experimenting with their music, including featuring the women as the predominant vocals.
