Because I'm interested in the horse-human bond, I have a file of interesting stories about horses and people from the past. I came across Annie's story for the first time about ten years ago-- but I got a little bit of pushback when I first suggested telling her story. She's an older woman-- not too rich, not too healthy, not much money. Nothing special about her except that she wasn't ready to be written off by the world. You hear about older women actors having trouble finding roles, and in truth, it's the same for women in books-- you might read about movie stars, spies, the mistresses of Presidents... but when's the last time you read a book about an ordinary woman who just refuses to be taken for granted? That's why I was so delighted to be able to introduce this indomitable woman to the world.

Elizabeth Angie, thank you so much for the lovely and luminous review of The Eighty Dollar Champion. I'm so happy that you liked it, and I'm glad that you received an ARC copy.
Let's keep our fingers crossed for a movie. I can't decide who I would want to play Harry...
