As I write this, I'm on Prince Edward Island in Canada. It's such a beautiful place--green fields, the deep blue of the ocean and unusual red cliffs and sand. The history here goes back 10 thousand years to the arrival of the first humans on the island, and the fossil record goes much farther back than that. Lots of stories!(less)

That sense of humor, that desire to find the light in the darkness, that we might demeaningly call "plucky" or even find inappropriate or offensive, intrigued me. I began to see how humor was a potent weapon when fighting a Fascist government that sought total control over its people. (less)

Writers and rain

It's another rainy day here in California--but I am not complaining! Despite 8 (9?) consecutive atmospheric rivers, we are not yet out of the drought (though we must be close, right?). I drove past our local reservoir yesterday and it's looking good, unless you are a houseboat owner--the houseboats broke free of their moorings in the last storm and got carried into a huge gyre of driftwood that wa Read more of this blog post »

I devoured this entire book on one rainy day, which always heightens enjoyment, I think. I have undertaken some "long rides" myself on horseback without as much planning as I should have done, and it was wonderful to be immersed in Annie Wilkins's ho ...more

I loved the setting --London, 1926. Usually novels about that era focus on the Bright Young Things, but this one looks at London's underworld--missing girls, gangsters, class conflict, and women's roles in that moment. I'm a huge Atkinson fan, and th ...more

"If a book about Mussolini's Italy can be called fun, this is that book. Sally Brady is sent away from her family at age 12 -- they couldn't afford to feed her & she was old enough to get a job. She lands in LA, then is picked up on the streets by a m" Read more of this review »

“American tourists come here and they see only the happy, beautiful Italy they want to see, and that the Italians want them to see. The party. They don’t see the scars. The ongoing struggles. Why would they? They don’t see them at home, either.”
Christina Lynch, The Italian Party

“The world’s first bank was born here—Monte dei Paschi di Siena, in 1472. Before Columbus even set sail!”
