As I write this, I'm on Prince Edward Island in Canada. It's such a beautiful place--green fields, the deep blue of the ocean and unusual red cliffs and sand. The history here goes back 10 thousand years to the arrival of the first humans on the island, and the fossil record goes much farther back than that. Lots of stories!(less)

The chapters are named for the neighborhood organizations (in Italian: "contrada/contrade") in Siena, which are named for those animals/objects. Each contrada's symbol is on its flag, which becomes part of the Palio horse race pageantry each summer. I thought it was a fun way to introduce the contradas to the reader, along with their mottos. In my original plan, each chapter would take place in a different area of the city (contrada), but that became unwieldy in terms of story, so I just used them as names, though there are some chapters where they events take place in the contrada the chapter is named for...
Thank you for writing! I hope you enjoy the novel.(less)

What is it like balancing writing and teaching?

A lot of people assume that my students are deeply impressed by my work as a novelist--ha! Teaching is a humbling profession. As most teachers will tell you, our students assume we disappear into a puff of smoke when we leave the classroom, and have no lives outside of meeting their needs (answering emails that begin "What did I miss today?"). “American tourists come here and they see only the happy, beautiful Italy they want to see, and that the Italians want them to see. The party. They don’t see the scars. The ongoing struggles. Why would they? They don’t see them at home, either.”
Christina Lynch, The Italian Party

“The world’s first bank was born here—Monte dei Paschi di Siena, in 1472. Before Columbus even set sail!”
