Around the World in 80 Days Journey

We are going to follow the travels of Phileas Fogg from this classic adventure novel
by Jules Verne.


✱ Published in 1873, this classic has become synonymous with travel over the years. Phileas Fogg, a rich British gentleman, sets off with his French valet, Jean Passepartout, on an epic adventure that takes him all over the world in order to win a bet he made for £20,000. He sets out to prove that with the opening of India's new railway it is possible to travel around the world in 80 days.
✱ Today parts of Fogg's journey would be very difficult to complete due to travel restrictions and lack of available ocean travel. Despite this, there have been many real life imitations. The two most famous were Nellie Bly in 1889, who traveled the world in 72 days for her newspaper, and in 1988, Michael Palin (Monty Python) completed the journey for a BBC travelogue in 79 days and 7 hours.
✱ It's interesting that the Hot Air Balloon has become a popular image connected with the book because Fogg never actually used that method of transportation. It was made popular by the 1956 film where a hot air balloon was used for a portion of the journey.

Below you will find Fogg's itinerary. Choose one of the options and complete a task for each location for a total of 27 tasks.

ITINERARY

Days 1 - 3

1. London, England - The Reform Club

Upper class gentlemen of the 19th century frequented “gentlemen clubs” on a regular basis. Fogg’s bet was made in The Reform Club, which does exist. Founded in 1836, it is a private members' club that was comprised of an all-male membership for decades. It wasn’t until 1982 that it changed its rules to include the admission of women. It was the first gentlemen’s club in London to make the change.

2. Dover, England

Fogg and his valet, Passepartout ,begin their journey on the night of October 2, 1872. Their first challenge is to cross The English Channel. There isn’t a lot of detail regarding this in the book but they would have had to take a train to Dover, the closest ferry port on the Strait of Dover which is the narrowest part of the English Channel. Though now the area may be better known for the spectacular White Cliffs of Dover which bring travelers from all over the world to see.

3. Calais, France

The ferry’s destination was the French port of Calais. Since the Middle Ages it has been an important center for trading with England. Under English rule from 1347 to 1558, it was called the "brightest jewel in the English crown". Calais is still a key transport hub, but also draws visitors as a popular beach destination and is home to the Lace Museum for which the town is famed.

4. Paris, France

The next step of Fogg’s journey would be getting to Paris - a 3 hour train ride from Calais. At the time, Paris was in the middle of a major restoration period following a recent revolution. Even though the iconic Eiffel Tower was not yet built, the city was gaining beautiful squares and parks and wide new avenues all converging at the famous Arc de Triomphe. Fogg would not have had the time to enjoy the charms of the city but would be switching trains and heading through the French alps to Italy on the Orient Express.

5. Turin, Italy

Our adventurers’ train stops in Turin, a major political center in northern Italy that served as the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865. Today it is an important business and cultural center known for its rich architecture, numerous art galleries, churches, palaces, opera houses, piazzas, and museums.

6. Brindisi, Italy

Fogg now heads south by rail to the charming city of Brindisi which lies on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Due to its strategic position on the Italian Peninsula, the city has played an important role in trade. Fogg and his valet board the steamer The Mongolia for a 4 day voyage to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

Days 4 - 7

7. Mediterranean Sea

Their steamer heads out to the Mediterranean Sea which is actually made up of many smaller seas and borders 22 different countries. For hundreds of years it has served as the central superhighway of transport, trade and cultural exchange between diverse peoples encompassing three continents. The Mongolia was probably just one of many steamers crossing the sea since it boasts some of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

Days 8 - 20

8. Suez Canal, Egypt

Arriving in Egypt, Fogg’s first sign of trouble begins. Mistaken for a notorious bank robber, a Scotland Yard detective joins them when they reboard The Mongolia and he follows Fogg for the remainder of the journey. They travel down the newly built Suez Canal which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea making it the shortest link between the east and the west. This important thoroughfare opened for navigation in November of 1869.

9. Aden, Yemen

The steamer made a stop in the city of Aden. At the time, Aden was a British Colony and an important port and coaling station for trade between British India, the Far East, and Europe. The commercial and strategic importance increased considerably when the Suez Canal opened. From then and until the 1960s, the Port of Aden was one of the busiest ship-bunkering, duty-free shopping, and trading ports in the world. Unfortunately, today Aden is considered a highly dangerous destination and closed to travelers.

Days 21 - 23

10. Bombay (Mumbai), India

Promising the captain a reward if they arrive ahead of schedule, they cross the Arabian Sea and sail into Bombay two days early. Known as "The Gateway to India", it was a booming trade center in the 19th century and home to the country’s first railway. Fogg soon discovers the Trans-Indian Railway ends 50 miles short of Calcutta, their next destination, so he must make an alternative plan. Believe it or not, he purchases an elephant, hires a guide, and the group rides the elephant through the Indian jungles.

11. Allahabad, India

The adventure continues when our travelers rescue Aouda, a young woman about to be put to her death at a Sati ceremony, a former practice in India whereby a widow throws herself onto her husband's funeral pyre. They create a plan to have Passepartout take the place of the deceased husband on the pyre - rising from the dead, scaring the priests so they can carry Aouda away. Their plan works and they even manage to make it to Allababad in time to catch the train to Calcutta.

Days 24 - 36

12. Calcutta, India

Fashioned by the colonial British in the manner of a grand European city, Calcutta was the capital of India at the time and under British rule. It is now one of India’s largest cities and one of its major ports. Then considered British soil, Detective Fix takes the opportunity to arrest Fogg and Passepartout but of course, they escape, jump bail and hurry off to board their awaiting steamer The Rangoon which is heading to Hong Kong. Fix also boards the steamer at the last minute - he will not give up!

13. Singapore

During their 13 day journey across the South China Sea, the steamer makes a stop in Singapore to take on more coal. During the 19th century, Singapore quickly grew as an important trade hub, attracting immigrants from China, India, the Malay Archipelago and beyond. We discover that something is brewing between Fogg and Aouda - they disembark for a romantic carriage ride through the city. You can actually still take a horse and carriage ride through the Singapore Zoo.

Days 37 - 42

14. Hong Kong, China

Hong Kong was another British Crown Colony in the 19th century. It was the main supplier of tea to the Commonwealth and in return they supplied the country with opium. Seeing this as his last chance to arrest Fogg, Detective Fix uses this drug to his advantage, taking Passepartout to an opium den, keeping him from informing Fogg of a change in the departure time of their next vessel, The Carnatic. The valet manages to catch the steamer but as Fix hoped, Fogg misses the departure. But Fogg still outsmarts the detective and escapes arrest.

15. Shanghai, China

Not finding another steamer in Hong Kong, Fogg and Aouda take a pilot boat to Shanghai. One of the first Chinese ports to be opened to Western trade, Shanghai has become one of the world's largest seaports. Its striking skyline today would look like science fiction to Fogg in the 19th century. They do find a steamer that will take them both to Yokohama where they hope to meet up with Passepartout.

16. Yokohama, Japan

Just south of Tokyo, Yokohama is a Japanese port that was opened to foreign trade in 1859 and became home to a large population of Chinese. Today it boasts having the largest Chinatown in all of Asia. Our travelers have all arrived safely and Fogg starts the search for his valet. He finds him working in a circus trying to earn his fare home. After being reunited, the four of them (including Detective Fix, who promises to stop trying to delay Fogg) board a paddle-steamer, the General Grant, to take them across the Pacific.

Days 43 - 64

17. Trans Pacific Crossing

This is the longest portion of their journey, taking 22 days to cross the Pacific Ocean. They have spent a great deal of time on steamers which were a major driver of trade globalization. In 1867, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company launched the first regularly scheduled trans-Pacific steamship service with a route between San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Yokohama. This route led to an influx of Japanese and Chinese immigrants, bringing additional cultural diversity to California.

Days 65 - 71

18. San Francisco, California USA

They arrive in the US via San Francisco, which had experienced two recent booms - the 1849 Gold Rush and the discovery of silver in the Comstock Lode in 1859. It had grown from a village of 800 people into a busy city of 35,000. Our travelers board the Pacific Railroad Train bound for Omaha, Nebraska not knowing that there are many obstacles ahead for them.

19. Ogden & Salt Lake City, Utah USA

The train crosses the Sierra Nevada mountain range into the state of Nevada where it must stop and wait for a giant herd of bison to cross the tracks. They enter Utah and marvel at the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA

Traveling into Wyoming and crossing the Rocky Mountains, the train is forced to stop near Medicine Bow because the suspension bridge that crosses the river has been damaged by bad weather and they are not sure it will support the weight of the train. After much deliberation they decide they can try crossing at full speed! They barely make it across before the bridge completely collapses into the rapids of the river. Close call!!! Maybe this is a good reason why suspension bridges are rarely used for railways anymore.

21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA

There is more excitement ahead when the train is attacked by Sioux Indians near Fort Kearney, an important stage station built in 1848 as a safe haven for Overland Trail travelers, Pony Express riders, and gold prospectors. The soldiers at the fort scare the attackers away but it was soon discovered that Passepartout had been kidnapped. Fogg departs with a team of soldiers, leaving Aouda in the capable hands of Detective Fix, and goes off to rescue his faithful valet. He is successful but when he returns he finds that the train has left without them.

22. Omaha, Nebraska USA

Our travelers’ next mode of transportation was quite unusual - a sledge with sails! Fashioned to the “sail” over the frozen plains, it could reach a speed equal if not superior to that of the express trains. The distance between Fort Kearney and Omaha, as the birds fly, is almost 200 hundred miles. If the wind held good, the distance might be traversed in five hours, reaching Omaha in time to catch the train. And that they did with only enough time to board!

23. Chicago, Illinois, USA

Chicago is their next destination where they hope to find a train that will take them to New York City. The Windy City was in the throes of the “Great Rebuilding” from the devastating fire that happened the year previously, destroying 4 square miles of the city and leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless. Fogg and his companions find the city has risen from its ruins, proudly seated on the borders of its beautiful Lake Michigan. They board a train that will take them through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey like a flash, hoping to catch the steamer bound for England.

24. New York, New York USA

New York City in 1872 would look very different from the city we know. Several key landmarks would be missing: the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. “Missing” is the key word here - our globetrotters arrive to discover they have missed their transportation home by just a few hours. The only steamer available is heading to Bordeaux, France. With no other options they board the Henrietta the next morning.

Days 72 - 80

25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland

The 80 day mark is fast approaching and Fogg is getting desperate! He cannot convince the captain of the ship to make a detour so he bribes the crew to mutiny and make course for Liverpool. They encounter hurricane force winds and eventually run out of fuel. But Fogg buys the ship from the captain and has the crew burn the wooden parts of the ship for fuel. Unfortunately, they only get as far as Queenstown, Ireland, a seaport town now known as Cobh and famous for being the last port of call of the ill-fated Titanic.

26. Liverpool, England

Fogg’s party catches an express mail train to Dublin where they board a ferry to Liverpool, the famous maritime city that brought us The Beatles. Fogg is ahead of schedule but Detective Fix throws him a curveball - he has a warrant for his arrest, unbeknownst to him that the real thief was actually arrested 3 days earlier in Scotland. The misunderstanding is soon ironed out, Fogg is released and charters a train to London with very little time to spare and certain he has lost the wager.

27. London, England

Fogg, Aouda and Passepartout finally arrive at London but are five minutes past their deadline. Fogg is feeling defeated and has spent every penny he owns. He apologizes to Aouda for bringing her on this journey but she confesses her love for him and asks that he marry her right away. Passepartout goes to find a minister and learns that they have mistaken the date - because they have traveled eastward, they gained a day crossing the International Date Line. Fogg not only has won a bride but is able to get to the Reform Club in time and wins the wager too!

Upper class gentlemen of the 19th century frequented “gentlemen clubs” on a regular basis. Fogg’s bet was made in The Reform Club, which does exist. Founded in 1836, it is a private members' club that was comprised of an all-male membership for decades. It wasn’t until 1982 that it changed its rules to include the admission of women. It was the first gentlemen’s club in London to make the change.

Fogg and his valet, Passepartout ,begin their journey on the night of October 2, 1872. Their first challenge is to cross The English Channel. There isn’t a lot of detail regarding this in the book but they would have had to take a train to Dover, the closest ferry port on the Strait of Dover which is the narrowest part of the English Channel. Though now the area may be better known for the spectacular White Cliffs of Dover which bring travelers from all over the world to see.

The ferry’s destination was the French port of Calais. Since the Middle Ages it has been an important center for trading with England. Under English rule from 1347 to 1558, it was called the "brightest jewel in the English crown". Calais is still a key transport hub, but also draws visitors as a popular beach destination and is home to the Lace Museum for which the town is famed.

The next step of Fogg’s journey would be getting to Paris - a 3 hour train ride from Calais. At the time, Paris was in the middle of a major restoration period following a recent revolution. Even though the iconic Eiffel Tower was not yet built, the city was gaining beautiful squares and parks and wide new avenues all converging at the famous Arc de Triomphe. Fogg would not have had the time to enjoy the charms of the city but would be switching trains and heading through the French alps to Italy on the Orient Express.

The Mongolia was probably just one of many steamers crossing the sea since it boasts some of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

Arriving in Egypt, Fogg’s first sign of trouble begins. Mistaken for a notorious bank robber, a Scotland Yard detective joins them when they reboard The Mongolia and he follows Fogg for the remainder of the journey. They travel down the newly built Suez Canal which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea making it the shortest link between the east and the west. This important thoroughfare opened for navigation in November of 1869.

The steamer made a stop in the city of Aden. At the time, Aden was a British Colony and an important port and coaling station for trade between British India, the Far East, and Europe. The commercial and strategic importance increased considerably when the Suez Canal opened. From then and until the 1960s, the Port of Aden was one of the busiest ship-bunkering, duty-free shopping, and trading ports in the world. Unfortunately, today Aden is considered a highly dangerous destination and closed to travelers.

Promising the captain a reward if they arrive ahead of schedule, they cross the Arabian Sea and sail into Bombay two days early. Known as "The Gateway to India", it was a booming trade center in the 19th century and home to the country’s first railway. Fogg soon discovers the Trans-Indian Railway ends 50 miles short of Calcutta, their next destination, so he must make an alternative plan. Believe it or not, he purchases an elephant, hires a guide, and the group rides the elephant through the Indian jungles.

The adventure continues when our travelers rescue Aouda, a young woman about to be put to her death at a Sati ceremony, a former practice in India whereby a widow throws herself onto her husband's funeral pyre. They create a plan to have Passepartout take the place of the deceased husband on the pyre - rising from the dead, scaring the priests so they can carry Aouda away. Their plan works and they even manage to make it to Allababad in time to catch the train to Calcutta.

√12. Calcutta, India
Fashioned by the colonial British in the manner of a grand European city, Calcutta was the capital of India at the time and under British rule. It is now one of India’s largest cities and one of its major ports. Then considered British soil, Detective Fix takes the opportunity to arrest Fogg and Passepartout but of course, they escape, jump bail and hurry off to board their awaiting steamer The Rangoon which is heading to Hong Kong. Fix also boards the steamer at the last minute - he will not give up!

During their 13 day journey across the South China Sea, the steamer makes a stop in Singapore to take on more coal. During the 19th century, Singapore quickly grew as an important trade hub, attracting immigrants from China, India, the Malay Archipelago and beyond. We discover that something is brewing between Fogg and Aouda - they disembark for a romantic carriage ride through the city. You can actually still take a horse and carriage ride through the Singapore Zoo.

√14. Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong was another British Crown Colony in the 19th century. It was the main supplier of tea to the Commonwealth and in return they supplied the country with opium. Seeing this as his last chance to arrest Fogg, Detective Fix uses this drug to his advantage, taking Passepartout to an opium den, keeping him from informing Fogg of a change in the departure time of their next vessel, The Carnatic. The valet manages to catch the steamer but as Fix hoped, Fogg misses the departure. But Fogg still outsmarts the detective and escapes arrest.

Not finding another steamer in Hong Kong, Fogg and Aouda take a pilot boat to Shanghai. One of the first Chinese ports to be opened to Western trade, Shanghai has become one of the world's largest seaports. Its striking skyline today would look like science fiction to Fogg in the 19th century. They do find a steamer that will take them both to Yokohama where they hope to meet up with Passepartout.

Just south of Tokyo, Yokohama is a Japanese port that was opened to foreign trade in 1859 and became home to a large population of Chinese. Today it boasts having the largest Chinatown in all of Asia. Our travelers have all arrived safely and Fogg starts the search for his valet. He finds him working in a circus trying to earn his fare home. After being reunited, the four of them (including Detective Fix, who promises to stop trying to delay Fogg) board a paddle-steamer, the General Grant, to take them across the Pacific.

In 1867, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company launched the first regularly scheduled trans-Pacific steamship service with a route between San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Yokohama. This route led to an influx of Japanese and Chinese immigrants, bringing additional cultural diversity to California.

They arrive in the US via San Francisco, which had experienced two recent booms - the 1849 Gold Rush and the discovery of silver in the Comstock Lode in 1859. It had grown from a village of 800 people into a busy city of 35,000. Our travelers board the Pacific Railroad Train bound for Omaha, Nebraska not knowing that there are many obstacles ahead for them.

The train crosses the Sierra Nevada mountain range into the state of Nevada where it must stop and wait for a giant herd of bison to cross the tracks. They enter Utah and marvel at the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

√20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA
Traveling into Wyoming and crossing the Rocky Mountains, the train is forced to stop near Medicine Bow because the suspension bridge that crosses the river has been damaged by bad weather and they are not sure it will support the weight of the train. After much deliberation they decide they can try crossing at full speed! They barely make it across before the bridge completely collapses into the rapids of the river. Close call!!! Maybe this is a good reason why suspension bridges are rarely used for railways anymore.

There is more excitement ahead when the train is attacked by Sioux Indians near Fort Kearney, an important stage station built in 1848 as a safe haven for Overland Trail travelers, Pony Express riders, and gold prospectors. The soldiers at the fort scare the attackers away but it was soon discovered that Passepartout had been kidnapped. Fogg departs with a team of soldiers, leaving Aouda in the capable hands of Detective Fix, and goes off to rescue his faithful valet. He is successful but when he returns he finds that the train has left without them.

Our travelers’ next mode of transportation was quite unusual - a sledge with sails! Fashioned to the “sail” over the frozen plains, it could reach a speed equal if not superior to that of the express trains. The distance between Fort Kearney and Omaha, as the birds fly, is almost 200 hundred miles. If the wind held good, the distance might be traversed in five hours, reaching Omaha in time to catch the train. And that they did with only enough time to board!

Chicago is their next destination where they hope to find a train that will take them to New York City. The Windy City was in the throes of the “Great Rebuilding” from the devastating fire that happened the year previously, destroying 4 square miles of the city and leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless. Fogg and his companions find the city has risen from its ruins, proudly seated on the borders of its beautiful Lake Michigan. They board a train that will take them through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey like a flash, hoping to catch the steamer bound for England.

The only steamer available is heading to Bordeaux, France. With no other options they board the Henrietta the next morning.

The 80 day mark is fast approaching and Fogg is getting desperate! He cannot convince the captain of the ship to make a detour so he bribes the crew to mutiny and make course for Liverpool. They encounter hurricane force winds and eventually run out of fuel. But Fogg buys the ship from the captain and has the crew burn the wooden parts of the ship for fuel. Unfortunately, they only get as far as Queenstown, Ireland, a seaport town now known as Cobh and famous for being the last port of call of the ill-fated Titanic.

Fogg’s party catches an express mail train to Dublin where they board a ferry to Liverpool, the famous maritime city that brought us The Beatles. Fogg is ahead of schedule but Detective Fix throws him a curveball - he has a warrant for his arrest, unbeknownst to him that the real thief was actually arrested 3 days earlier in Scotland. The misunderstanding is soon ironed out, Fogg is released and charters a train to London with very little time to spare and certain he has lost the wager.

Passepartout goes to find a minister and learns that they have mistaken the date - because they have traveled eastward, they gained a day crossing the International Date Line. Fogg not only has won a bride but is able to get to the Reform Club in time and wins the wager too!

The adventure continues when our travelers rescue Aouda, a young woman about to be put to her death at a Sati ceremony, a former practice in India whereby a widow throws herself onto her husband's funeral pyre. They create a plan to have Passepartout take the place of the deceased husband on the pyre - rising from the dead, scaring the priests so they can carry Aouda away. Their plan works and they even manage to make it to Allababad in time to catch the train to Calcutta.

12. Calcutta, India
Fashioned by the colonial British in the manner of a grand European city, Calcutta was the capital of India at the time and under British rule. It is now one of India’s largest cities and one of its major ports. Then considered British soil, Detective Fix takes the opportunity to arrest Fogg and Passepartout but of course, they escape, jump bail and hurry off to board their awaiting steamer The Rangoon which is heading to Hong Kong. Fix also boards the steamer at the last minute - he will not give up!

13. Singapore
During their 13 day journey across the South China Sea, the steamer makes a stop in Singapore to take on more coal. During the 19th century, Singapore quickly grew as an important trade hub, attracting immigrants from China, India, the Malay Archipelago and beyond. We discover that something is brewing between Fogg and Aouda - they disembark for a romantic carriage ride through the city. You can actually still take a horse and carriage ride through the Singapore Zoo.

14. Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong was another British Crown Colony in the 19th century. It was the main supplier of tea to the Commonwealth and in return they supplied the country with opium. Seeing this as his last chance to arrest Fogg, Detective Fix uses this drug to his advantage, taking Passepartout to an opium den, keeping him from informing Fogg of a change in the departure time of their next vessel, The Carnatic. The valet manages to catch the steamer but as Fix hoped, Fogg misses the departure. But Fogg still outsmarts the detective and escapes arrest.

15. Shanghai, China
Not finding another steamer in Hong Kong, Fogg and Aouda take a pilot boat to Shanghai. One of the first Chinese ports to be opened to Western trade, Shanghai has become one of the world's largest seaports. Its striking skyline today would look like science fiction to Fogg in the 19th century. They do find a steamer that will take them both to Yokohama where they hope to meet up with Passepartout.

16. Yokohama, Japan
Just south of Tokyo, Yokohama is a Japanese port that was opened to foreign trade in 1859 and became home to a large population of Chinese. Today it boasts having the largest Chinatown in all of Asia. Our travelers have all arrived safely and Fogg starts the search for his valet. He finds him working in a circus trying to earn his fare home. After being reunited, the four of them (including Detective Fix, who promises to stop trying to delay Fogg) board a paddle-steamer, the General Grant, to take them across the Pacific.

17. Trans Pacific Crossing
This is the longest portion of their journey, taking 22 days to cross the Pacific Ocean. They have spent a great deal of time on steamers which were a major driver of trade globalization. In 1867, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company launched the first regularly scheduled trans-Pacific steamship service with a route between San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Yokohama. This route led to an influx of Japanese and Chinese immigrants, bringing additional cultural diversity to California.

Pt 2 - Around the World in 80 Days Journey

18. San Francisco, California USA
They arrive in the US via San Francisco, which had experienced two recent booms - the 1849 Gold Rush and the discovery of silver in the Comstock Lode in 1859. It had grown from a village of 800 people into a busy city of 35,000. Our travelers board the Pacific Railroad Train bound for Omaha, Nebraska not knowing that there are many obstacles ahead for them.

19. Ogden & Salt Lake City, Utah USA
The train crosses the Sierra Nevada mountain range into the state of Nevada where it must stop and wait for a giant herd of bison to cross the tracks. They enter Utah and marvel at the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA
Traveling into Wyoming and crossing the Rocky Mountains, the train is forced to stop near Medicine Bow because the suspension bridge that crosses the river has been damaged by bad weather and they are not sure it will support the weight of the train. After much deliberation they decide they can try crossing at full speed! They barely make it across before the bridge completely collapses into the rapids of the river. Close call!!! Maybe this is a good reason why suspension bridges are rarely used for railways anymore.

21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA
There is more excitement ahead when the train is attacked by Sioux Indians near Fort Kearney, an important stage station built in 1848 as a safe haven for Overland Trail travelers, Pony Express riders, and gold prospectors. The soldiers at the fort scare the attackers away but it was soon discovered that Passepartout had been kidnapped. Fogg departs with a team of soldiers, leaving Aouda in the capable hands of Detective Fix, and goes off to rescue his faithful valet. He is successful but when he returns he finds that the train has left without them.

22. Omaha, Nebraska USA
Our travelers’ next mode of transportation was quite unusual - a sledge with sails! Fashioned to the “sail” over the frozen plains, it could reach a speed equal if not superior to that of the express trains. The distance between Fort Kearney and Omaha, as the birds fly, is almost 200 hundred miles. If the wind held good, the distance might be traversed in five hours, reaching Omaha in time to catch the train. And that they did with only enough time to board!

23. Chicago, Illinois, USA
Chicago is their next destination where they hope to find a train that will take them to New York City. The Windy City was in the throes of the “Great Rebuilding” from the devastating fire that happened the year previously, destroying 4 square miles of the city and leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless. Fogg and his companions find the city has risen from its ruins, proudly seated on the borders of its beautiful Lake Michigan. They board a train that will take them through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey like a flash, hoping to catch the steamer bound for England.

24. New York, New York USA
New York City in 1872 would look very different from the city we know. Several key landmarks would be missing: the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. “Missing” is the key word here - our globetrotters arrive to discover they have missed their transportation home by just a few hours. The only steamer available is heading to Bordeaux, France. With no other options they board the Henrietta the next morning.

25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland
The 80 day mark is fast approaching and Fogg is getting desperate! He cannot convince the captain of the ship to make a detour so he bribes the crew to mutiny and make course for Liverpool. They encounter hurricane force winds and eventually run out of fuel. But Fogg buys the ship from the captain and has the crew burn the wooden parts of the ship for fuel. Unfortunately, they only get as far as Queenstown, Ireland, a seaport town now known as Cobh and famous for being the last port of call of the ill-fated Titanic.

26. Liverpool, England
Fogg’s party catches an express mail train to Dublin where they board a ferry to Liverpool, the famous maritime city that brought us The Beatles. Fogg is ahead of schedule but Detective Fix throws him a curveball - he has a warrant for his arrest, unbeknownst to him that the real thief was actually arrested 3 days earlier in Scotland. The misunderstanding is soon ironed out, Fogg is released and charters a train to London with very little time to spare and certain he has lost the wager.

27. London, England
Fogg, Aouda and Passepartout finally arrive at London but are five minutes past their deadline. Fogg is feeling defeated and has spent every penny he owns. He apologizes to Aouda for bringing her on this journey but she confesses her love for him and asks that he marry her right away. Passepartout goes to find a minister and learns that they have mistaken the date - because they have traveled eastward, they gained a day crossing the International Date Line. Fogg not only has won a bride but is able to get to the Reform Club in time and wins the wager too!

Upper class gentlemen of the 19th century frequented “gentlemen clubs” on a regular basis. Fogg’s bet was made in The Reform Club, which does exist. Founded in 1836, it is a private members' club that was comprised of an all-male membership for decades. It wasn’t until 1982 that it changed its rules to include the admission of women. It was the first gentlemen’s club in London to make the change.

Fogg and his valet, Passepartout ,begin their journey on the night of October 2, 1872. Their first challenge is to cross The English Channel. There isn’t a lot of detail regarding this in the book but they would have had to take a train to Dover, the closest ferry port on the Strait of Dover which is the narrowest part of the English Channel. Though now the area may be better known for the spectacular White Cliffs of Dover which bring travelers from all over the world to see.

The ferry’s destination was the French port of Calais. Since the Middle Ages it has been an important center for trading with England. Under English rule from 1347 to 1558, it was called the "brightest jewel in the English crown". Calais is still a key transport hub, but also draws visitors as a popular beach destination and is home to the Lace Museum for which the town is famed.

The next step of Fogg’s journey would be getting to Paris - a 3 hour train ride from Calais. At the time, Paris was in the middle of a major restoration period following a recent revolution. Even though the iconic Eiffel Tower was not yet built, the city was gaining beautiful squares and parks and wide new avenues all converging at the famous Arc de Triomphe. Fogg would not have had the time to enjoy the charms of the city but would be switching trains and heading through the French alps to Italy on the Orient Express.

Our adventurers’ train stops in Turin, a major political center in northern Italy that served as the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865. Their steamer heads out to the Mediterranean Sea which is actually made up of many smaller seas and borders 22 different countries. For hundreds of years it has served as the central superhighway of transport, trade and cultural exchange between diverse peoples encompassing three continents. The Mongolia was probably just one of many steamers crossing the sea since it boasts some of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

8. Suez Canal, Egypt
Arriving in Egypt, Fogg’s first sign of trouble begins. Mistaken for a notorious bank robber, a Scotland Yard detective joins them when they reboard The Mongolia and he follows Fogg for the remainder of the journey. They travel down the newly built Suez Canal which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea making it the shortest link between the east and the west. This important thoroughfare opened for navigation in November of 1869.

9. Aden, Yemen
The steamer made a stop in the city of Aden. At the time, Aden was a British Colony and an important port and coaling station for trade between British India, the Far East, and Europe. The commercial and strategic importance increased considerably when the Suez Canal opened. From then and until the 1960s, the Port of Aden was one of the busiest ship-bunkering, duty-free shopping, and trading ports in the world. Unfortunately, today Aden is considered a highly dangerous destination and closed to travelers.

Promising the captain a reward if they arrive ahead of schedule, they cross the Arabian Sea and sail into Bombay two days early. Known as "The Gateway to India", it was a booming trade center in the 19th century and home to the country’s first railway. Fogg soon discovers the Trans-Indian Railway ends 50 miles short of Calcutta, their next destination, so he must make an alternative plan. Believe it or not, he purchases an elephant, hires a guide, and the group rides the elephant through the Indian jungles.

The adventure continues when our travelers rescue Aouda, a young woman about to be put to her death at a Sati ceremony, a former practice in India whereby a widow throws herself onto her husband's funeral pyre. They create a plan to have Passepartout take the place of the deceased husband on the pyre - rising from the dead, scaring the priests so they can carry Aouda away. Their plan works and they even manage to make it to Allababad in time to catch the train to Calcutta.

12. Calcutta, India
Fashioned by the colonial British in the manner of a grand European city, Calcutta was the capital of India at the time and under British rule. It is now one of India’s largest cities and one of its major ports. Then considered British soil, Detective Fix takes the opportunity to arrest Fogg and Passepartout but of course, they escape, jump bail and hurry off to board their awaiting steamer The Rangoon which is heading to Hong Kong. Fix also boards the steamer at the last minute - he will not give up!

13. Singapore
During their 13 day journey across the South China Sea, the steamer makes a stop in Singapore to take on more coal. During the 19th century, Singapore quickly grew as an important trade hub, attracting immigrants from China, India, the Malay Archipelago and beyond. We discover that something is brewing between Fogg and Aouda - they disembark for a romantic carriage ride through the city. You can actually still take a horse and carriage ride through the Singapore Zoo.

14. Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong was another British Crown Colony in the 19th century. It was the main supplier of tea to the Commonwealth and in return they supplied the country with opium. Seeing this as his last chance to arrest Fogg, Detective Fix uses this drug to his advantage, taking Passepartout to an opium den, keeping him from informing Fogg of a change in the departure time of their next vessel, The Carnatic. The valet manages to catch the steamer but as Fix hoped, Fogg misses the departure. But Fogg still outsmarts the detective and escapes arrest.

Just south of Tokyo, Yokohama is a Japanese port that was opened to foreign trade in 1859 and became home to a large population of Chinese. Today it boasts having the largest Chinatown in all of Asia. Our travelers have all arrived safely and Fogg starts the search for his valet. He finds him working in a circus trying to earn his fare home. After being reunited, the four of them (including Detective Fix, who promises to stop trying to delay Fogg) board a paddle-steamer, the General Grant, to take them across the Pacific.

17. Trans Pacific Crossing
This is the longest portion of their journey, taking 22 days to cross the Pacific Ocean. They have spent a great deal of time on steamers which were a major driver of trade globalization. In 1867, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company launched the first regularly scheduled trans-Pacific steamship service with a route between San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Yokohama. This route led to an influx of Japanese and Chinese immigrants, bringing additional cultural diversity to California.

The train crosses the Sierra Nevada mountain range into the state of Nevada where it must stop and wait for a giant herd of bison to cross the tracks. They enter Utah and marvel at the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA
Traveling into Wyoming and crossing the Rocky Mountains, the train is forced to stop near Medicine Bow because the suspension bridge that crosses the river has been damaged by bad weather and they are not sure it will support the weight of the train. After much deliberation they decide they can try crossing at full speed! They barely make it across before the bridge completely collapses into the rapids of the river. Close call!!! Maybe this is a good reason why suspension bridges are rarely used for railways anymore.

21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA
There is more excitement ahead when the train is attacked by Sioux Indians near Fort Kearney, an important stage station built in 1848 as a safe haven for Overland Trail travelers, Pony Express riders, and gold prospectors. The soldiers at the fort scare the attackers away but it was soon discovered that Passepartout had been kidnapped. Fogg departs with a team of soldiers, leaving Aouda in the capable hands of Detective Fix, and goes off to rescue his faithful valet. He is successful but when he returns he finds that the train has left without them.

22. Omaha, Nebraska USA
Our travelers’ next mode of transportation was quite unusual - a sledge with sails! Fashioned to the “sail” over the frozen plains, it could reach a speed equal if not superior to that of the express trains. The distance between Fort Kearney and Omaha, as the birds fly, is almost 200 hundred miles. If the wind held good, the distance might be traversed in five hours, reaching Omaha in time to catch the train. And that they did with only enough time to board!

Chicago is their next destination where they hope to find a train that will take them to New York City. The Windy City was in the throes of the “Great Rebuilding” from the devastating fire that happened the year previously, destroying 4 square miles of the city and leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless. Fogg and his companions find the city has risen from its ruins, proudly seated on the borders of its beautiful Lake Michigan. They board a train that will take them through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey like a flash, hoping to catch the steamer bound for England.

Several key landmarks would be missing: the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. “Missing” is the key word here - our globetrotters arrive to discover they have missed their transportation home by just a few hours. The only steamer available is heading to Bordeaux, France. With no other options they board the Henrietta the next morning.

The 80 day mark is fast approaching and Fogg is getting desperate! He cannot convince the captain of the ship to make a detour so he bribes the crew to mutiny and make course for Liverpool. They encounter hurricane force winds and eventually run out of fuel. But Fogg buys the ship from the captain and has the crew burn the wooden parts of the ship for fuel. Unfortunately, they only get as far as Queenstown, Ireland, a seaport town now known as Cobh and famous for being the last port of call of the ill-fated Titanic.

Fogg’s party catches an express mail train to Dublin where they board a ferry to Liverpool, the famous maritime city that brought us The Beatles. Fogg is ahead of schedule but Detective Fix throws him a curveball - he has a warrant for his arrest, unbeknownst to him that the real thief was actually arrested 3 days earlier in Scotland. The misunderstanding is soon ironed out, Fogg is released and charters a train to London with very little time to spare and certain he has lost the wager.

He apologizes to Aouda for bringing her on this journey but she confesses her love for him and asks that he marry her right away. Passepartout goes to find a minister and learns that they have mistaken the date - because they have traveled eastward, they gained a day crossing the International Date Line. Fogg not only has won a bride but is able to get to the Reform Club in time and wins the wager too!

ITINERARY

1. London, England - The Reform Club
Upper class gentlemen of the 19th century frequented “gentlemen clubs” on a regular basis. Fogg’s bet was made in The Reform Club, which does exist. Founded in 1836, it is a private members' club that was comprised of an all-male membership for decades. It wasn’t until 1982 that it changed its rules to include the admission of women. It was the first gentlemen’s club in London to make the change.

2. Dover, England
Fogg and his valet, Passepartout ,begin their journey on the night of October 2, 1872. Their first challenge is to cross The English Channel. There isn’t a lot of detail regarding this in the book but they would have had to take a train to Dover, the closest ferry port on the Strait of Dover which is the narrowest part of the English Channel. Though now the area may be better known for the spectacular White Cliffs of Dover which bring travelers from all over the world to see.

3. Calais, France
The ferry’s destination was the French port of Calais. Since the Middle Ages it has been an important center for trading with England. Under English rule from 1347 to 1558, it was called the "brightest jewel in the English crown". Calais is still a key transport hub, but also draws visitors as a popular beach destination and is home to the Lace Museum for which the town is famed.

4. Paris, France
The next step of Fogg’s journey would be getting to Paris - a 3 hour train ride from Calais. At the time, Paris was in the middle of a major restoration period following a recent revolution. Even though the iconic Eiffel Tower was not yet built, the city was gaining beautiful squares and parks and wide new avenues all converging at the famous Arc de Triomphe. Fogg would not have had the time to enjoy the charms of the city but would be switching trains and heading through the French alps to Italy on the Orient Express.

5. Turin, Italy
Our adventurers’ train stops in Turin, a major political center in northern Italy that served as the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865. Today it is an important business and cultural center known for its rich architecture, numerous art galleries, churches, palaces, opera houses, piazzas, and museums.

6. Brindisi, Italy
Fogg now heads south by rail to the charming city of Brindisi which lies on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Due to its strategic position on the Italian Peninsula, the city has played an important role in trade. Fogg and his valet board the steamer The Mongolia for a 4 day voyage to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

7. Mediterranean Sea
Their steamer heads out to the Mediterranean Sea which is actually made up of many smaller seas and borders 22 different countries. For hundreds of years it has served as the central superhighway of transport, trade and cultural exchange between diverse peoples encompassing three continents. The Mongolia was probably just one of many steamers crossing the sea since it boasts some of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

8. Suez Canal, Egypt
Arriving in Egypt, Fogg’s first sign of trouble begins. Mistaken for a notorious bank robber, a Scotland Yard detective joins them when they reboard The Mongolia and he follows Fogg for the remainder of the journey. They travel down the newly built Suez Canal which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea making it the shortest link between the east and the west. This important thoroughfare opened for navigation in November of 1869.

9. Aden, Yemen
The steamer made a stop in the city of Aden. At the time, Aden was a British Colony and an important port and coaling station for trade between British India, the Far East, and Europe. The commercial and strategic importance increased considerably when the Suez Canal opened. From then and until the 1960s, the Port of Aden was one of the busiest ship-bunkering, duty-free shopping, and trading ports in the world. Unfortunately, today Aden is considered a highly dangerous destination and closed to travelers.

10. Bombay (Mumbai), India
Promising the captain a reward if they arrive ahead of schedule, they cross the Arabian Sea and sail into Bombay two days early. Known as "The Gateway to India", it was a booming trade center in the 19th century and home to the country’s first railway. Fogg soon discovers the Trans-Indian Railway ends 50 miles short of Calcutta, their next destination, so he must make an alternative plan. Believe it or not, he purchases an elephant, hires a guide, and the group rides the elephant through the Indian jungles.

11. Allahabad, India
The adventure continues when our travelers rescue Aouda, a young woman about to be put to her death at a Sati ceremony, a former practice in India whereby a widow throws herself onto her husband's funeral pyre. They create a plan to have Passepartout take the place of the deceased husband on the pyre - rising from the dead, scaring the priests so they can carry Aouda away. Their plan works and they even manage to make it to Allababad in time to catch the train to Calcutta.

12. Calcutta, India
Fashioned by the colonial British in the manner of a grand European city, Calcutta was the capital of India at the time and under British rule. It is now one of India’s largest cities and one of its major ports. Then considered British soil, Detective Fix takes the opportunity to arrest Fogg and Passepartout but of course, they escape, jump bail and hurry off to board their awaiting steamer The Rangoon which is heading to Hong Kong. Fix also boards the steamer at the last minute - he will not give up!

13. Singapore
During their 13 day journey across the South China Sea, the steamer makes a stop in Singapore to take on more coal. During the 19th century, Singapore quickly grew as an important trade hub, attracting immigrants from China, India, the Malay Archipelago and beyond. We discover that something is brewing between Fogg and Aouda - they disembark for a romantic carriage ride through the city. You can actually still take a horse and carriage ride through the Singapore Zoo.

14. Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong was another British Crown Colony in the 19th century. It was the main supplier of tea to the Commonwealth and in return they supplied the country with opium. Seeing this as his last chance to arrest Fogg, Detective Fix uses this drug to his advantage, taking Passepartout to an opium den, keeping him from informing Fogg of a change in the departure time of their next vessel, The Carnatic. The valet manages to catch the steamer but as Fix hoped, Fogg misses the departure. But Fogg still outsmarts the detective and escapes arrest.

15. Shanghai, China
Not finding another steamer in Hong Kong, Fogg and Aouda take a pilot boat to Shanghai. One of the first Chinese ports to be opened to Western trade, Shanghai has become one of the world's largest seaports. Its striking skyline today would look like science fiction to Fogg in the 19th century. They do find a steamer that will take them both to Yokohama where they hope to meet up with Passepartout.

16. Yokohama, Japan
Just south of Tokyo, Yokohama is a Japanese port that was opened to foreign trade in 1859 and became home to a large population of Chinese. Today it boasts having the largest Chinatown in all of Asia. Our travelers have all arrived safely and Fogg starts the search for his valet. He finds him working in a circus trying to earn his fare home. After being reunited, the four of them (including Detective Fix, who promises to stop trying to delay Fogg) board a paddle-steamer, the General Grant, to take them across the Pacific.

17. Trans Pacific Crossing
This is the longest portion of their journey, taking 22 days to cross the Pacific Ocean. They have spent a great deal of time on steamers which were a major driver of trade globalization. In 1867, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company launched the first regularly scheduled trans-Pacific steamship service with a route between San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Yokohama. This route led to an influx of Japanese and Chinese immigrants, bringing additional cultural diversity to California.

18. San Francisco, California USA
They arrive in the US via San Francisco, which had experienced two recent booms - the 1849 Gold Rush and the discovery of silver in the Comstock Lode in 1859. It had grown from a village of 800 people into a busy city of 35,000. Our travelers board the Pacific Railroad Train bound for Omaha, Nebraska not knowing that there are many obstacles ahead for them.

19. Ogden & Salt Lake City, Utah USA
The train crosses the Sierra Nevada mountain range into the state of Nevada where it must stop and wait for a giant herd of bison to cross the tracks. They enter Utah and marvel at the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA
Traveling into Wyoming and crossing the Rocky Mountains, the train is forced to stop near Medicine Bow because the suspension bridge that crosses the river has been damaged by bad weather and they are not sure it will support the weight of the train. After much deliberation they decide they can try crossing at full speed! They barely make it across before the bridge completely collapses into the rapids of the river. Close call!!! Maybe this is a good reason why suspension bridges are rarely used for railways anymore.

21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA
There is more excitement ahead when the train is attacked by Sioux Indians near Fort Kearney, an important stage station built in 1848 as a safe haven for Overland Trail travelers, Pony Express riders, and gold prospectors. The soldiers at the fort scare the attackers away but it was soon discovered that Passepartout had been kidnapped. Fogg departs with a team of soldiers, leaving Aouda in the capable hands of Detective Fix, and goes off to rescue his faithful valet. He is successful but when he returns he finds that the train has left without them.

22. Omaha, Nebraska USA
Our travelers’ next mode of transportation was quite unusual - a sledge with sails! Fashioned to the “sail” over the frozen plains, it could reach a speed equal if not superior to that of the express trains. The distance between Fort Kearney and Omaha, as the birds fly, is almost 200 hundred miles. If the wind held good, the distance might be traversed in five hours, reaching Omaha in time to catch the train. And that they did with only enough time to board!

23. Chicago, Illinois, USA
Chicago is their next destination where they hope to find a train that will take them to New York City. The Windy City was in the throes of the “Great Rebuilding” from the devastating fire that happened the year previously, destroying 4 square miles of the city and leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless. Fogg and his companions find the city has risen from its ruins, proudly seated on the borders of its beautiful Lake Michigan. They board a train that will take them through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey like a flash, hoping to catch the steamer bound for England.

24. New York, New York USA
New York City in 1872 would look very different from the city we know. Several key landmarks would be missing: the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. “Missing” is the key word here - our globetrotters arrive to discover they have missed their transportation home by just a few hours. The only steamer available is heading to Bordeaux, France. With no other options they board the Henrietta the next morning.

25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland
The 80 day mark is fast approaching and Fogg is getting desperate! He cannot convince the captain of the ship to make a detour so he bribes the crew to mutiny and make course for Liverpool. They encounter hurricane force winds and eventually run out of fuel. But Fogg buys the ship from the captain and has the crew burn the wooden parts of the ship for fuel. Unfortunately, they only get as far as Queenstown, Ireland, a seaport town now known as Cobh and famous for being the last port of call of the ill-fated Titanic.

26. Liverpool, England
Fogg’s party catches an express mail train to Dublin where they board a ferry to Liverpool, the famous maritime city that brought us The Beatles. Fogg is ahead of schedule but Detective Fix throws him a curveball - he has a warrant for his arrest, unbeknownst to him that the real thief was actually arrested 3 days earlier in Scotland. The misunderstanding is soon ironed out, Fogg is released and charters a train to London with very little time to spare and certain he has lost the wager.

Fogg, Aouda and Passepartout finally arrive at London but are five minutes past their deadline. Fogg is feeling defeated and has spent every penny he owns. He apologizes to Aouda for bringing her on this journey but she confesses her love for him and asks that he marry her right away. Passepartout goes to find a minister and learns that they have mistaken the date - because they have traveled eastward, they gained a day crossing the International Date Line. Fogg not only has won a bride but is able to get to the Reform Club in time and wins the wager too!

Fogg now heads south by rail to the charming city of Brindisi which lies on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Due to its strategic position on the Italian Peninsula, the city has played an important role in trade. Fogg and his valet board the steamer The Mongolia for a 4 day voyage to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

7. Mediterranean Sea
Their steamer heads out to the Mediterranean Sea which is actually made up of many smaller seas and borders 22 different countries. For hundreds of years it has served as the central superhighway of transport, trade and cultural exchange between diverse peoples encompassing three continents. The Mongolia was probably just one of many steamers crossing the sea since it boasts some of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

8. Suez Canal, Egypt
Arriving in Egypt, Fogg’s first sign of trouble begins. Mistaken for a notorious bank robber, a Scotland Yard detective joins them when they reboard The Mongolia and he follows Fogg for the remainder of the journey. They travel down the newly built Suez Canal which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea making it the shortest link between the east and the west. This important thoroughfare opened for navigation in November of 1869.

9. Aden, Yemen
The steamer made a stop in the city of Aden. At the time, Aden was a British Colony and an important port and coaling station for trade between British India, the Far East, and Europe. The commercial and strategic importance increased considerably when the Suez Canal opened. From then and until the 1960s, the Port of Aden was one of the busiest ship-bunkering, duty-free shopping, and trading ports in the world. Unfortunately, today Aden is considered a highly dangerous destination and closed to travelers.

10. Bombay (Mumbai), India
Promising the captain a reward if they arrive ahead of schedule, they cross the Arabian Sea and sail into Bombay two days early. Known as "The Gateway to India", it was a booming trade center in the 19th century and home to the country’s first railway. Fogg soon discovers the Trans-Indian Railway ends 50 miles short of Calcutta, their next destination, so he must make an alternative plan. Believe it or not, he purchases an elephant, hires a guide, and the group rides the elephant through the Indian jungles.

11. Allahabad, India
The adventure continues when our travelers rescue Aouda, a young woman about to be put to her death at a Sati ceremony, a former practice in India whereby a widow throws herself onto her husband's funeral pyre. They create a plan to have Passepartout take the place of the deceased husband on the pyre - rising from the dead, scaring the priests so they can carry Aouda away. Their plan works and they even manage to make it to Allababad in time to catch the train to Calcutta.

12. Calcutta, India
Fashioned by the colonial British in the manner of a grand European city, Calcutta was the capital of India at the time and under British rule. It is now one of India’s largest cities and one of its major ports. Then considered British soil, Detective Fix takes the opportunity to arrest Fogg and Passepartout but of course, they escape, jump bail and hurry off to board their awaiting steamer The Rangoon which is heading to Hong Kong. Fix also boards the steamer at the last minute - he will not give up!

13. Singapore
During their 13 day journey across the South China Sea, the steamer makes a stop in Singapore to take on more coal. During the 19th century, Singapore quickly grew as an important trade hub, attracting immigrants from China, India, the Malay Archipelago and beyond. We discover that something is brewing between Fogg and Aouda - they disembark for a romantic carriage ride through the city. You can actually still take a horse and carriage ride through the Singapore Zoo.

14. Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong was another British Crown Colony in the 19th century. It was the main supplier of tea to the Commonwealth and in return they supplied the country with opium. Seeing this as his last chance to arrest Fogg, Detective Fix uses this drug to his advantage, taking Passepartout to an opium den, keeping him from informing Fogg of a change in the departure time of their next vessel, The Carnatic. The valet manages to catch the steamer but as Fix hoped, Fogg misses the departure. But Fogg still outsmarts the detective and escapes arrest.

15. Shanghai, China
Not finding another steamer in Hong Kong, Fogg and Aouda take a pilot boat to Shanghai. One of the first Chinese ports to be opened to Western trade, Shanghai has become one of the world's largest seaports. Its striking skyline today would look like science fiction to Fogg in the 19th century. They do find a steamer that will take them both to Yokohama where they hope to meet up with Passepartout.

16. Yokohama, Japan
Just south of Tokyo, Yokohama is a Japanese port that was opened to foreign trade in 1859 and became home to a large population of Chinese. Today it boasts having the largest Chinatown in all of Asia. Our travelers have all arrived safely and Fogg starts the search for his valet. He finds him working in a circus trying to earn his fare home. After being reunited, the four of them (including Detective Fix, who promises to stop trying to delay Fogg) board a paddle-steamer, the General Grant, to take them across the Pacific.

17. Trans Pacific Crossing
This is the longest portion of their journey, taking 22 days to cross the Pacific Ocean. They have spent a great deal of time on steamers which were a major driver of trade globalization. In 1867, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company launched the first regularly scheduled trans-Pacific steamship service with a route between San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Yokohama. This route led to an influx of Japanese and Chinese immigrants, bringing additional cultural diversity to California.

18. San Francisco, California USA
They arrive in the US via San Francisco, which had experienced two recent booms - the 1849 Gold Rush and the discovery of silver in the Comstock Lode in 1859. It had grown from a village of 800 people into a busy city of 35,000. Our travelers board the Pacific Railroad Train bound for Omaha, Nebraska not knowing that there are many obstacles ahead for them.

19. Ogden & Salt Lake City, Utah USA
The train crosses the Sierra Nevada mountain range into the state of Nevada where it must stop and wait for a giant herd of bison to cross the tracks. They enter Utah and marvel at the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. The train then has a 6 hour layover in Ogden, Utah so our travelers take the opportunity to cure their curiosity about Mormonism and visit Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital founded
in 1847.

20. Medicine Bow, Wyoming USA
Traveling into Wyoming and crossing the Rocky Mountains, the train is forced to stop near Medicine Bow because the suspension bridge that crosses the river has been damaged by bad weather and they are not sure it will support the weight of the train. After much deliberation they decide they can try crossing at full speed! They barely make it across before the bridge completely collapses into the rapids of the river. Close call!!! Maybe this is a good reason why suspension bridges are rarely used for railways anymore.

21. Fort Kearney, Nebraska USA
There is more excitement ahead when the train is attacked by Sioux Indians near Fort Kearney, an important stage station built in 1848 as a safe haven for Overland Trail travelers, Pony Express riders, and gold prospectors. The soldiers at the fort scare the attackers away but it was soon discovered that Passepartout had been kidnapped. Fogg departs with a team of soldiers, leaving Aouda in the capable hands of Detective Fix, and goes off to rescue his faithful valet. He is successful but when he returns he finds that the train has left without them.

22. Omaha, Nebraska USA
Our travelers’ next mode of transportation was quite unusual - a sledge with sails! Fashioned to the “sail” over the frozen plains, it could reach a speed equal if not superior to that of the express trains. The distance between Fort Kearney and Omaha, as the birds fly, is almost 200 hundred miles. If the wind held good, the distance might be traversed in five hours, reaching Omaha in time to catch the train. And that they did with only enough time to board!

23. Chicago, Illinois, USA
Chicago is their next destination where they hope to find a train that will take them to New York City. The Windy City was in the throes of the “Great Rebuilding” from the devastating fire that happened the year previously, destroying 4 square miles of the city and leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless. Fogg and his companions find the city has risen from its ruins, proudly seated on the borders of its beautiful Lake Michigan. They board a train that will take them through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey like a flash, hoping to catch the steamer bound for England.

24. New York, New York USA
New York City in 1872 would look very different from the city we know. Several key landmarks would be missing: the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. “Missing” is the key word here - our globetrotters arrive to discover they have missed their transportation home by just a few hours. The only steamer available is heading to Bordeaux, France. With no other options they board the Henrietta the next morning.

25. Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland
The 80 day mark is fast approaching and Fogg is getting desperate! He cannot convince the captain of the ship to make a detour so he bribes the crew to mutiny and make course for Liverpool. They encounter hurricane force winds and eventually run out of fuel. But Fogg buys the ship from the captain and has the crew burn the wooden parts of the ship for fuel. Unfortunately, they only get as far as Queenstown, Ireland, a seaport town now known as Cobh and famous for being the last port of call of the ill-fated Titanic.

26. Liverpool, England
Fogg’s party catches an express mail train to Dublin where they board a ferry to Liverpool, the famous maritime city that brought us The Beatles. Fogg is ahead of schedule but Detective Fix throws him a curveball - he has a warrant for his arrest, unbeknownst to him that the real thief was actually arrested 3 days earlier in Scotland. The misunderstanding is soon ironed out, Fogg is released and charters a train to London with very little time to spare and certain he has lost the wager.

27. London, England
Fogg, Aouda and Passepartout finally arrive at London but are five minutes past their deadline. Fogg is feeling defeated and has spent every penny he owns. Passepartout goes to find a minister and learns that they have mistaken the date - because they have traveled eastward, they gained a day crossing the International Date Line. Fogg not only has won a bride but is able to get to the Reform Club in time and wins the wager too!

I'm asking because I love my indie books and some of them have no MPGs (yet).
