Hi Lena,

What a great idea - a prequel about Er Lang before he met Li Lan! That sounds like a lot of fun, especially since he was one of my favourite characters to write (and he took over a lot of the book which he wasn't supposed to, at the expense of poor Tian Bai...). I can imagine that a book devoted entirely to Er Lang might have lots of adventures, all carried out in a somewhat arrogant and highhanded manner ;)

Right now I'm working on my second novel, another strange tale set in 1930s colonial Malaya, but I'm definitely open to writing a sequel to The Ghost Bride in the future!

Best wishes,

Hi Kim,

Thank you so much! As an avid reader myself, I'm honored that you stayed up late reading The Ghost Bride - though the Chinese auntie in me is a bit worried that you're not getting enough sleep. ;) I am indeed working on another novel right now, and will try my best to keep writing (fueled by many late night trips to the refrigerator...)

Best wishes,

There’s been a long silence on this blog, not because I haven’t been eating and reading books, but because I’m almost done writing my second novel. I say this with some trepidation because to be honest, I’ve been claimingI’m “almost done” for a while. And all the time, mybook keeps getting longer and longer and longer.

The good news is that I’m very excited about it, as I think it’s a strange an...

I really enjoyed this darkly luminous collection of loosely linked stories. Ogawa had me thinking about carrots shaped like human hands for a long time afterwards...

“In the darkness of a thousand
withered souls, it was Er Lang’s hand that I
sought, and his voice that I longed to hear. Perhaps
it is selfish of me, but an uncertain future

than being left behind.”

“The Chinese considered the moon to be yin, feminine and full of negative energy, as opposed to the sun that was yang and exemplified masculinity. I liked the moon, with its soft silver beams. It was at once elusive and filled with trickery, so that lost objects that had rolled into the crevices of a room were rarely found, and books read in its light seemed to contain all sorts of fanciful stories that were never there the next morning.”

“I don't keep mistresses; it's far too much trouble. I'm offering to marry you, although I might regret it. And if you think the Lim family disapproved of your marriage, wait until you meet mine.”
