Great book. Totally unique structure, but it worked for me. Great voices and a really great plot that is slowly unraveled on each page.

Second book in the series and while I still really enjoy the protagonist, the story wandered a bit, particularly toward the end. Not as tight as the first book in the series, but still entertaining and worth your time.

Really enjoyed this book. Great lead character with a great voice. Very accurate depiction of small town Texas life. The tendency will be to say this is a book for girls, but I'd argue that it's just as important for boys to read it.
More of Jeff's books…
“I'd forced books on my kids from the day they were born and, as it turned out, it had been completely unnecessary because all of them liked to read. Or maybe they liked to read because I'd read aloud nearly every children's book in print.”
Jeff Shelby, The Murder Pit

“do it when it's daylight.” He laughed again. “Daisy. No one else is coming in.” “That's not what I'm worried about.” “Then what are you worried about?” I rolled closer to him. “How did whoever killed Olaf find that opening?” He thought for a moment. “I don't have a good answer for that,” he admitted. “I mean, you couldn't just walk into our yard and see it,” I said. “It wasn't visible. You would've had to know it was there.” He nodded. “Yeah, suppose so.” “The only people who could've known about it were the owners before us,” I said slowly. “Or the owners before them...” I sat up straight. “So it has to be one of them.” Jake looked dubious. “I don't know about that.” “How could it not?” I asked, smacking the pillow. “No one else would've known.” “You're assuming two things,” Jake said. “One, that the previous owners knew about the opening. We've lived here for”
Jeff Shelby, The Murder Pit

“She tucked her chin to her chest and looked at me like I was a Neanderthal. Except I remembered that scientists had recently discovered that Neanderthals were actually probably capable of complex thought and communication so that analogy wouldn't work anymore.”
Jeff Shelby, The Murder Pit
