Novels, collections, anthologies - anything that is able to give us a true scare in this mad, mad, mad century.

Who Goes There? was first published in 1938, so it's hardly a XXI century horror book ;)

This particular edition of Who Goes There? was published in 2009. If that goes against the spirit of the list then I'm sure that Vlad will remove the book.
Horrorshow wrote: "This particular edition of Who Goes There? was published in 2009. If that goes against the spirit of the list then I'm sure that Vlad will remove the book."Sorry, guys, I'd really have to remove this (and Robert Chambers, alas).
Upd. If I find a way to, that is :)
Upd.2 It seems I did.
No problem. Sorry to have wasted your time.
Sorry, guys and gals, but Stephen King's The Stand has nothing to do with the 21st century, so it had to go away.
I'm forced to introduce a new rule and exorcize books with less than 75 ratings from the list. I understand you guys're trying to promote yourself but please give people a wider picture. The other thing that I understand is that some good books (including my own favorites) will have to go away. Well, we should rely on some criterion, and any book can come back as soon as it attains some popularity.
Here are some items that should be removed from the list:It - Stephen King first published 1986
Summer of Night- Dan Simmons first published 1991
The Girl Next Door- Jack Ketchum first published 1989
Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson first published 1959
The Descent - Jeff Long first published 1999
Rose Madder - Stephen King first published 1995
Not saying all of these aren't great books, they just don't belong on this list.
There are a bunch of books on the list that are way too low in ratings:1) Witchwoods by Gary Henry (4 ratings)
2) Forever and Ever by Anthony Hulse (42 ratings)
3) The Everborn by Nicholas Grabowsky (14 ratings)
4) Bloodstained Tales by David Hearne (14 ratings)
5) Chainsaw Alice in Wonderland by Khurt Khave (1 rating)
6) Unpardonable Sin by Michael Potts (3 ratings)
7) Zombie War by Nicholas Ryan (12 ratings)
8) Die Trying by Nicholas Ryan (3 ratings)
9) Dead Rage by Nicholas Ryan (55 ratings)
10) The Ape's Wife by Caitlin Kiernan (56 ratings)
Also, what are the rules on multiple books in the same series being on the list? My opinion would be that no more than one book from the same series by the same author should be on the list; otherwise the list just gets clogged up with 3 or 6 or 9 listings that are basically the same book.
For example, there are 3 books in Michael West's Harmony Indiana series in the top 100, 7 books in J.K. Accinni's Species Intervention #6609 series in the top 50 and 9 books in Karina Halle's Experiment in Terror series on the list.
Thanks, Melanie, I delete the wrong books from time to time, and now's the right moment for that.As for multiple books, that's less obvious. Take, for instance, David Wong's John Dies at the End series. The first novel and the second one are really different in their plot and tone, but both are equally good, so it'd be unjust to throw the second book away. I'll give some more thought to this issue, though, since multiple entry points do clog the list up. Thanks again.
revised edition are good, right? F.Paul Wilson updated his Adversary Cycle to all blend well with modern day. I seen some of the books here, but not the updated issues.
Salem's Lot, originally published in 1991, has been removed from page 2. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...It, originally published 1987, is also gone from that page.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...
Likewise, The Shining is gone from page 3 due to a vast discrepancy between actual first publication date and the very specific parameters of this list.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Which leads us back to the eternal question as to why those that love books enough to spend time on Goodreads and vote on listopias are too often singularly unable to read the most basic instructions.
Mr. Mercedes, though scribed by horror-master Stephen King, is a mystery, not horror, and is now gone from the last page.
Ahem. Thank you. My snark-fest is over now.
The system found and removed 1 duplicate.
Snark-fest is resumed: does the list's descriptor not clearly state:" Books with less than 75 ratings will be removed. Please don't see this list as a way to promote your books with a little help from your friends."...?
So some more titles are coming down, down, down. Here we go:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
I don't think I found them all; if I can, I'll return tomorrow to mop up those remaining. It's galling to see just how many titles here (pp 2 and 3) were exactly what the listmaker said should not happen: titles with 1 or 2 ratings with the strong appearance of an author trying to sneak their book onto a best-loved list. *gnashing of teeth*
The list has great potential to grow and expand in a more natural, authentic way if we can just keep the rats out of the corn crib.
Deny the Moon (Wolf-Blooded #1) has just 10 ratings; it must go. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...Dark Winter: Last Rites (Dark Winter, #3) has 1 rating. It too must leave us.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Demonic Visions 50 Horror Tales Book 4 (Demonic Visions 50 Horror Tales, #4) 10 ratings and about to leave.https://www.goodreads.com/search?utf8...
Welcome Home had 3 ratings and is gone:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Ceasul fantasmelor with 18 ratings leaves us: https://www.goodreads.com/search?utf8...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... Psychopomp, with 4 ratings, leaves us.
Learning to Kiss in the Snow, 33 ratings, gone:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Also,Cellar Door: Words of Beauty, Tales of Terror, with 23 ratings, leaves us.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
The Last Legacy: Season One, 28 ratings:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Murder Red Ink, 24 ratings:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Century's Best Horror etc:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
And: The Century's Best Horror Fiction Volume Two, with 11 ratings: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
With just 1 rating--puhleeze!--Chris Mentillo: Weird Tales of Horror
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
The Death of Fear (The Damned Hunger Chronicles, #1)
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
And here's one that landed on the wrong list, a popular historical fiction title:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
With 7 ratings:Rise of a Phoenix: Rise of a Phoenix:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Every time I think I have finished, there's another one, floating among the legitimate entries like a turd in the punch bowl:
Being Small, 11 ratings https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Because I eventually need to get off the listopia and get on with my life, I finally made a decision to leave those with 50 ratings or more alone. That doesn't mean that nobody else should remove them; merely that there were so, so many really low ratings, lots with just 1 or 2, that I had to prioritize. I have not checked copyright dates except for the few titles I had read and already knew were not originally published in the 21st century. So there are no doubt still a few issues. But this list does have great potential, and I think it is viable again. The first page was already pretty strong, so it was just a matter of mopping up the back two pages.
Happy October, fellow readers!
Currently on page one, The Dark by David C. Cassidy only has 21 ratingshttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Leah wrote: "Currently on page one, The Dark by David C. Cassidy only has 21 ratingshttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2..."
Good eyes, Leah! And now, it is gone. Removed from position #50; those interested, see link above in Leah's comment.
Good grief. No, no, and no! Less than a week has gone by since I cleared the obviously misplaced titles off the list. You need 75 ratings. It says so at the top of the page; an author plus two friends, or a fan and a couple more, does not constitute popularity. Leaving space #88 right this minute:The Mannequinshttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Also, with 1 whopping rating, Portrait of Rage:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... has now become my own portrait of irritation. Goodbye, lonely book.
Still another from page 2: 3vil, 3 ratings, gone.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
And yet: 3vil, Volume 2 https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... also gone.
With 3 ratings, Kai https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... has 72 fewer than the required number. Leaving now.
And here's one that won't even be published for another couple of days. 1 rating, going, gone:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
For heaven's sake, there it is again. Is this an October thing, or do people just blithely cruise in, disregard instructions, and drop their little gifts in here for us to pull out again all the time? With just 3 ratings each, https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... is coming down, joined by https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...Whoops, one more: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
And one more from page 2:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

Anything over 50 ratings, I will leave to the paid employees. As a volunteer, I am down for winnowing out the most egregious cheaters. And oh my do they come back! You can see how many I have edited out up there.
On the other hand, I will go after the wrong copyright dates, and thanks for the assist.
It looks as if the accepted release date for The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is 2005, with a false start in 1999. The awards were given based on 2005; I won't be the one to remove it.
Removed for 1997 copyright date:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... page 1
From page 2, copyright in the 1980's, https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
Publication date, removed:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
The others you mentioned, Leah, that are on page 2 are sufficiently ambiguous (again, awarded according to publication year for a year after 2000, or that year) that I am reluctant to zap them. Goodreads has very strict guidelines, and although they can't fire me--what with me not getting paid by them--they can certainly yank my librarian status, which I prize because cleaning up these lists is so satisfying. So I will take the safer path. Now, on to page 3:
Early copyright, removed https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
Note that this author has multiple false entries--whether due to enthusiastic readers or something more sketchy, I do not know.
The last few titles on Leah's list have an earlier publication date mentioned, but the date Goodreads recognizes is a date after 2000. Sometimes things are supposed to get published a certain time and get shelved; the publishing industry is so arcane and bizarre, I can't pretend to understand it, but I am honoring the bolded publication dates there, again, playing it safe.
However, the list is a lot cleaner now. Thanks.
Coming down with far too few ratings:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7...
It may take a village to raise a child, but it only takes a weekend to trash a listopia.
I am looking for a book that I read quite a few years ago. I cannot remember the name of the book but it is about a girl who gets into an argument with her boyfriend and he drops her on the side of the road and leaves. It was based in Kentucky but it is a fiction boo, She begins to start walking and ends up in the woods where she comes across and old church. There were men in this church and they end up chasing her through the woods to a house and the house is where someone lived that the men knew. Anyway does anyone know the name of the book???? Hopefully

Removed from #178 with just 30 ratings: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...Aw geez. I turned my back on this list for a couple of months and the sock puppets moved in. Removed from #164 with 40 ratings:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
And with 27 ratings, also gone from #178:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Removed with just 1 (give me a break) rating:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
3 more, same author, 1 rating apiece:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
I haven't touched it, but do question the presence of Mr. Mercedes, which is definitely a mystery. It's at #195.
Starting a second comment to let superlibrarians know: someone needs to have a word with author Shinzoo Mitsuda, who has one single rating for a string of entries (which I am about to delete).
Oh good grief. 48 hours and it's happened again. Read the instructions! With a paltry 20-something ratings and about to leave one of the #164 slots:Murder Red Ink
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Jagganath, removed from page 2, also too few ratings:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Murderous Little Darlings

Dark Winter etc.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Demonic Visions
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Jack the Ripper and Black Magic...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1....
Also, the system found and removed one duplicate.
If you're new to this listopia: Read the directions! I'm coming back soon.
Removed for having just 2 ratings, Godforsaken. Read the instructions, instructions, instructions:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Anthony Hulse is another spammer of list. Watch that guy. He thinks list are created to promote his books.
JDB wrote: "Anthony Hulse is another spammer of list. Watch that guy. He thinks list are created to promote his books."Did not see anything on this list by that author, unless it was an entry that had 75 or more ratings, in which case he is here legally as far as I can tell.
Removed one title for having just 29 ratings, less than half the minimum set as the listmaker's criteria:Point Hollow
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Tsk. I turned my back for less than 2 weeks, and here we go again. With 2 ratings, the unruly https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
is gone from #177.
...and again. #130, Overtaken: Captive States, a book with 42 ratings, is now gone:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
#133 Living Legacy, 41 ratings:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
page 3, Horror Stories and Other Horror Stories, 62 ratings:

I have to say I find it disturbing that so many of these entries, dropped time after time into this listopia despite diligent effort on the part of volunteers like me, are books by Goodreads authors. You folks know better than this. Behave.
I notice several true crime books on this list . Do they belong ? Also , The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule was published in 1980 .
Michael wrote: "I notice several true crime books on this list . Do they belong ? Also , The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule was published in 1980 ."The horror genre has some gray areas where it sometimes crosses over into other genres--mystery, thriller, fantasy, sci fi, and as you noted, true crime. Removing a book that can in any way be defended as belonging can get us volunteer librarians--the only ones that correct errors on listopia--in a great deal of trouble.
That said, your title is indeed a republished version of a 1980 book, and so it was clearly out of place, and now it is gone.
Removed for being published outside the list's parameters: The Stranger Beside Me, by Ann Rule https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Ghost Story by Jeff Brackett, a Goodreads author, was at the bottom of page 2 with only 18 ratings, a clear violation of the listmaker's criteria, and so it is gone. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...Page 3, 39 ratings, Glyphotech:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
Also from page 2, White Devil by Stella Purple, also a Goodreads author, with only 29 ratings, gone
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Also removed from page 2, also by Stella Purple, Red Roots, which has only 15 ratings, nearly all of them 5 stars yet strangely, not a single review:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Page 2, 42 ratings and about to leave us, Dark Awakenings:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...
Page 2, again by Stella Snow and this time with only 4 ratings, removed:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
And yet another one with very few ratings off the back page, and hey, guess who wrote it?
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Fellow librarians, at what point do we call this author misconduct? If Ms. Purple has crossed that line, how do I flag this problem?
Just because it's King doesn't mean it's a horror novel. Full Dark, No Stars is a collection of drama/suspense novellas. Lisey's Story is a drama.
Ellis wrote: "Just because it's King doesn't mean it's a horror novel. Full Dark, No Stars is a collection of drama/suspense novellas. Lisey's Story is a drama."You can say that, but there is also a defining supernatural element to Lisey's Story that puts it in a genre associated with the supernatural. That gives us science fiction, horror, or magical realism. I agree that it doesn't fit the horror genre as squarely as most of his work, but that overall sense of dread that defines horror is there, imho. But more importantly, to removed something from a list, it has to be absolutely misplaced or the librarian doing the act can get in a good deal of trouble.
Zombie Tales: Primrose Court Apt. 502 by
Robert DeCoteau (Goodreads Author)
