"Deputy Plunkert agrees to go with Call and Blankenship, but then his wife, who is just 16, has a pluperfect fit. They've never been apart overnight! The guy will probably back out. Otherwise, how could Pea Eye end up with them after all?" May 07, 2021 12:29AM

"They're driving the little elephant--Charlie, Fanwell, and JLB Matekone--and the cops pull them over. Wrong car; they make a fuss over JLB, who is a famed mechanic. Once back in, they discuss whether it's illegal to have the elephant, and JLB comments that it must be, or everyone would have one. He says it; nobody reacts; they move on. This is the sort of humor that slays me." May 07, 2021 12:27AM

""Peace is Better," second story, features a first person protagonist telling his story in a folksy, bad grammar that sounds vaguely Wild Westish, clearly intentional. But this isn't just any person. Through little references, assumed as known fact to the listener, we learn this person was hatched; soon after, that he has a tail, and it continues. By midway, we know he is an Egger." James Lee Burke
“..why is it that in problematic situations almost everyone resorts to axioms and societal remedies that in actuality almost nobody believes in?...ask yourself, have you ever known anyone whose marriage was saved by a marriage counselor, whose drinking was cured by a psychiatrist, whose son was kept out of reform school by a social worker?”
James Lee Burke Black Cherry Blues

Stephen Markley
“New Canaan had this look, like a magazine after it’s tossed on the fire, the way the pages blacken and curl as they begin to burn, but just before the flames take over.”
Stephen Markley, Ohio

“It's not clear whether, at this point, the Babiarzes fully understood that the libertarians were operating under vampire rules—the invitation to enter, once offered, could not be rescinded.”
Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling, A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear: The Utopian Plot to Liberate an American Town

Katherine Arden
“Having the world as you wish--that is not for the young," he added, "They want too much.”
Katherine Arden, The Girl in the Tower

Stephen Markley
“Life itself has become the final disposable, exploitable resource. We will do anything. Level whole mountains, erase whole species, relocate mighty rivers, burn forests to the ground, change the pH of the water, blanket ourselves in toxic chemistry. It took two million years for our species just to stand up and only five hundred to do the rest. Our culture is one of abundance, of entitlement, and basically little else. We've put our birthright at risk because we don't know how to control ourselves. Our lust.”
Stephen Markley, Ohio
