Wendy | 583 comments wendyma15.8 - IS THAT AN EYE UNDERNEATH THAT NOSE?
In honor of Pablo Picasso's birthday on October 25, read a book (fiction or non-fiction) where the subject is visual art or a visual artist or one in which a significant character is a visual artist (includes painters, sculptors, movie-makers, graphic artists, illustrators, photographers, etc).

Does not include books about books unless it ties to art (e.g. graphic novels, comic books). It's not sufficient to read a graphic novel, unless it's a graphic novel about an artist. A fiction book need not be about a real artist – it could be completely fictional, but with a character who is some sort of visual artist.

5.7 Circle of Life
Wolf Tower

Tanith Lee and I both share the same birthday: September 19! Yay!

5.8 Freedom to Read
James and the Giant Peach

This was on one of the frequently banned lists. I think it's because of the abusive caretakers and magical things...even though it's a fairy tale, and those are staples of the fairy-tale genre. People are silly.

15.2 Recommended Books
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

This was ranked 124 on the list, and I almost fell off my bed laughing while reading it. Poor Ros, he's so stupid. Poor Guil, having to deal with Ros ALL THE TIME.

I added/voted for forty-odd books on the list, including The Hunger Games, Ella Minnow Pea, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

30.8 Fall Back Into Reading
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw(10.2009) and Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History (9.2000)

The Last Straw was pretty funny--I can see why the kids love it so much. I think they're humorous as an adult looking back on that time of life. Isaac's Storm was brilliant. True story: I was reading it at school during a prep and sitting right by the window on a really windy day, and I was definitely getting scared as I read. That doesn't happen often. But I think everyone ought to read it because it's so well-written!

B. If your second die is 1, Read a book where a general is a main character (if it’s not obvious from the book description, please tell us about the character) ex. Gods and Generals
*The books for dice 1 and 2 ARE military themed, or at least feature military personnel as main characters.
C. If your third die is 6, Read a book you haven’t read before with the word ‘Honor(able)’ in the title ex. True Honor

I rolled a 5, a 1, and a 6.

25.3 Daylight Savings.....

Option A: Nonfiction, before I was born:

The Times We Had: Life with William Randolph Hearst by Marion Davies
3 stars

When I recently visited Hearst Castle, I fell in love with the Romanesque swimming pool. It's the place I dream of being when I'm stuck in a line or listening to a boring lecture. I wanted to learn what it was like to live in this awe inspiring place.
Fun read with lots of old Hollywood gossip.

Option C: Short Book: 176 pages

Boy: Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl
4 stars

Enchanting read.
