Fall Challenge 2010 Completed Tasks (do NOT delete any posts in this thread)

20.3 El’s Task (Best Review Contest) – Feminist Literature
I read David Ebershoff's The 19th Wife (514 pages). This book kept me in its thrall through 3 flights and 2 business trips. It carefully wove history and modern events into a fictional tale. I really enjoyed it.
David Ebershoff is a GoodReads Author. This is a big book (500+ pages)
20.4 Mrs. Soule’s Task (Author! Author!) - The Plot Line Thickens
I enjoy Zombie movies – only for their campy “reality” – not for real! So I read Zombies vs. Unicorns by Holly Black - a book of short stories on, you guessed it, zombies and/or unicorns (415 pages). I particularly enjoyed the part where the unicorns farted rainbows & flower smells - although that may have been the cold medicine kicking in... :) Holly Black is a GoodReads Author.
25.4 - Lisa MD's Task: Stay Tuned For Your Regularly Scheduled Program
I rolled Snake Eyes (Double Ones): You may choose any two programs you want from the 2010 and/or 1960 line-up, and complete the required reading for each. Woo-hoo!
2010 Fall TV line up:
3. Blue Bloods: Read a book with a police officer as a main character.
Tough Customer - Sandra Brown (319 pages)
Sandra Brown is a GoodReads Author
6. Glee: Read a book with a high school setting or musical main character.
Star Island - Carl Hiaasen (337 pages)

15.1 New Horizons- Choose a popular shelf you're not comfortable with.
Catching Fire (Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins.
This book was on the "futuristic" shelf. Not something I'd normally choose from, but I love this series!
20.4 Movie plot
The Book of Lies by Brad Melzer
My favorite movie is action and suspense- something that has some mystery to it, too. I really enjoy movies like The Librarian, The Davinci Code, etc. Did not enjoy this book though.
25.1 9, 10 or 11 book in a series.
Blood Game by Iris Johansen and The 9th Judgment by James Patterson (**claiming Goodreads author**)
Blood Game is the 9th in the Eve Duncan series (GR has it listed as 8 but BN.com and the library say it's #9- got permission to use it) and The 9th Judgement is the 9th book in the Women's Murder Club Series.

Attentat by Amélie Nothomb, so AN.
5.10 NAME THAT CAR
The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain.
Someone mentioned 'Prince' as a plausible name for a car. Unfortunately mine (actually my sister's) is just the 'Pauper'. Ah, the woes of being a student.
Total points: 30 + 3*5 = 45
And just one book to meet my personal goal! This challenge is making me read a lot more than I use to (even though that is just a little compared to many of you!)

20.4 The Plot Line Thickens
I like Legend/Tall Tale movies like “Big Fish” or “Get Low.” So I read Ray in Reverse by Daniel Wallace. The same author who wrote the book that "Big Fish" is based on.

10.8 - work memoir - Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper by Diablo Cody
The author was unenspiringly employed as a writer at an ad agency and decided to explore her opportunities in the skin trade for a year (how's that for a career change?!?) The book is set in my neck of the woods in Minneapolis which I thought was amusing.
I've never been to a strip club and even though there was one night in college when my ex-boyfriend's crazy party friend showed up at the bar with three off-the-clock strippers in tow, I've never really met or been exposed to any women who've worked in this line of business (that I am aware of). The only spot in the book I'd been to was here, an adult toy store with a live peep show. And yeah, I yelped it - and for anybody not familiar with Yelp, check it out. It's like Goodreads for bars and restaurants and theaters and clubs. Definitely worthwhile if you're into that kind of thing.

Only 3 more weeks left for the challenge! After looking at my books, I've decided to claim two of my unclaimed reads, since I'm sure now where they will fit:

5.9 - Comfort Read
For this task, you should reread an old favorite, revisit a beloved author, or pick up your favorite genre. OPTIONAL: Tell why you consider this a comfort read.
Judgement of the Judoon (2009) by Colin Brake (Hardcover, 256 pages) (#31 of Doctor Who) (post season four, pre- season five)
OPTIONAL: I'm a big fan of the new Doctor Who, and this book is a tie-in novel for the series. Something to read whilst waiting for new episodes.

From the Sept/Oct 2010 Edition of the Magazine:
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake (2010) by Aimee Bender (Hardcover, 293 pages) - It was OK but not as good as her debut novel (which I read last challenge.)

Up the Chimney Down: And Other Stories (outside: chimney) and Room for me and a mountain lion;: Poetry of open space, (inside: room)
Some of the stories in Up the Chimney Down were odd, but not unpleasantly so; I suspect they'd go over well with my students if I were going to do a read-aloud or something. Only a handful of poems from Room for Me... really spoke to me, but those poems that did were amazing. Not a bad pair, but not my favorites from this challenge.

20.4 Mrs. Soule’s Task (Author! Author!) - The Plot Line Thickens
Choose your favorite movie scenario then read a book with a similar plot line.
I love, love, love-love stories, especially if they take place in another time and place. I read Timeline by Michael Crichton. It was a story about historians who actually were sent through a "wormhole" to the 1300s, where love developed b/w the main female character and one of the main male characters fell in love after all of their trials. It was a really good book that I definitely recommend.
