Amy (jusamy) | 166 comments 25.3 -- Sandy's Task as suggested by Katy: Daylight Savings
2 Books from 2 Different Categories.
I chose:
[A] Historical Fiction by reading Scandal's Bride by Stephanie Laurens which takes place in the 1800s.
and
[D] Most Depressing: In Cold Blood: A True Account of a Multiple Murder and Its Consequences by Truman Capote. This book was depressing, for sure, but I certainly don't think is was the MOST depressing book of all time. Truman's matter of fact delivery of the story keeps it from bogging down into depression. Also, he writes the end as a kind of vengeant hope.

10.3 - FREEDOM - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which was approved in the help thread. (5*)

10.5 THE FIRST ESTATE - The Christmas Night Murder. This book is about an ex nun. In this book she goes back to the convent to celebrate Christmas and ends up staying to solve a mystery about a missing priest. There are also several nuns who play a major role in the story (4*).

10.6 - IN THE PINK - Swapping Lives by Jane Green (3*)

10.10 - GROUP HUG - The Confessions of Catherine de Medici which was being read by A History of Royals group for Sept/Oct. (4*)

15.9 - COIN FLIP - I flipped 2 DO IT so read a book with 300 pages The Queen's Handmaiden with 336 pages. (4*)

25.3 - DAYLIGHT SAVINGS - For historical fiction I read The Red Queen which I did not like as much as The White Queen. (3*). And for a short book I chose Ghost Of A Chance (4*).

30.6 - EXPLORATION - Across the Plains in the Donner Party this was written using first hand accounts of 2 members of The Donner Party. The description of the book is not correct on goodreads. It is about coming across the plains and that winter in the pass. There is not alot of gory details about the cannabalism but the girl in the story was only 12 years old. (3*) For the second part I read A Life on the Road by Charles Kuralt. It started with his youth and how he used to travel around with his father. Then about his journalism career and his travels around the world for CBS. It was approved in the help thread (4*).

GOODREADS AUTHORS - C.W. Gortner, Jennifer Ashley, Jayne Ann Krentz.

BIG BOOKS - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 870 pages.

This will bring my total to 470 points.

---

15.5 Literature Map
24 Hours

I put in "Jay Asher" and came up with Margaret Mahy, who I had never heard of. Not a bad book, but not as good as Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why.

20.4 The Plot Line Thickens
Ellen Foster

I like all sorts of movies, but one type I like is where the protagonist has to deal with situations that get worse and worse, but in the end everything turns out okay--which is what happens in this book.

20.5 Oprah's On!
Izzy, Willy-Nilly

This book was first published in 1986.

25.2 As Her Debut...
A Love Story Starring My Dead Best Friend (debut novel) Nevermore (debut novel, 2010)

Actually, these books could be switched--they're both debuts that were published this year. However, Nevermore is the better of the two. I'm so glad Creagh is writing a sequel!

30.3 Shipwrecked!
Ender's Game and The Positronic Man

Since I doubt I'd actually last long if I were shipwrecked on a deserted island (being pyrophobic means I'd probably be eaten and/or freeze to death the first night), I'd want to have two of the three books I read every year with me. Each time I read them, I pick up on something new, and my understanding of the books has changed in the fifteen or so years since I first read them.

50.1 Semper Fi
Chains (rolled 1: Revolutionary War), Casino Royale (rolled 3: Special Forces), and Above All, Honor (rolled 6: Honor)

Chains takes place during the Revolutionary War, and the protagonist is a slave who spies on her Tory owners for the Patriot cause. James Bond was allowed for special forces in the help thread (posts 3 and 24), but I didn't like Casino Royale as much as I liked the Bond short stories I've read. Above All, Honor was just boring...even the "steamy bits" didn't steam as much as dribble lukewarmly.

B. Read a book where the title contains a word from this list of commonly misspelled words: The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson. Sadly, and is included in the list of commonly misspelled words.

I read: A Practical Illustration of Woman's Right to Labor Or A Letter from Marie E. Zakrzewska, M.D. Late of Berlin, Prussia By: E. Marie Zakrzewska

The use of the term 'Letter' in the title is a bit misleading although the book is short at 120 pages, it does just make the page requirement. It was fascinating!

10.6 - In the Pink
I read Brilliant by Marne Davis Kellogg. The small picture doesn't really show it well, but the cover of the book is quite pink (I read the hardcover edition). Brilliant by Marne Davis Kellogg

20.4 - Mrs. Soule's Task - The Plot Line Thickens
For this task I chose the movie scenario where two characters are forced together by some circumstance; at the beginning they hate each other, but by the end have fallen in love (think of The Ugly Truth or Catch and Release). I read The Royal Treatment by MaryJanice Davidson.

30.1 - PJ Reads' Task - It's In the Cards
I drew the five of hearts and the jack of diamonds.
5 of Hearts (published in an odd year since 2000) - The Ark by Boyd Morrison, which was published in 2009
Jack of Diamonds (bestseller written by a man) - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson, which has been on the NY Times bestseller list for quite some time.

I am also claiming a Big Book ticket for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I read the mass market paperback edition, with 644 pages.

30.5 – Ms. Anderson and Tanja’s Task – Life Lessons
I rolled a 26, so I read a book with a misspelled word in the title, and a non-fiction book about a topic I know very little about.
2 - Playing with Fire by Gena Showalter ("with" is the misspelled word)
