I read The Monk Downstairs

On a different note, I did not expect so much sex -- and descriptive at that -- in a book with the word "monk" in the title. Who knew?

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by rBarbara Kingsolver, from the nonfiction shelf : I don’t easily read nonfiction books, but I really enjoyed this one, probably because Barbara Kingsolver is one of my favorite writers, and that she writes of her life, on a subject that really interests me.
For 10.6 IN THE PINK I read Jeune maman et paresseuse, as I'm a new mom :

Task: 20-7 Erin NY's Task: The Melting Pot
I Read:
O Pioneers! by Willa Cather.
My favorite aspect of this book is that it didn't stop with the Parents story, it went on to their children's experiences after they died. That is different from other immigrant stories that I have read and I liked that a lot.

I chose the Graphic Novels shelf and read:
Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood & The Story of a Return by Marjane Satrapi
This is the first graphic book I have read. It's not actually a novel but an autobiography, and I enjoyed it very much. I will read more graphic books if the subject matter interests me, whereas before this task I wouldn't even have looked at one.
So thanks for the task which has widened my reading!

20.4 The Plot Line Thickens
Resistance by Anita Shreve
This book had all the elements of my favorite plot line - strong female lead working against hostile army or corrupt government, plus being set in WWII, with a dash of romance. Apparently there actually is a movie based on the book, but I must have missed it - will have to add it to the netflix queue!

20.2 Music Tells the Story
I read Avalon High by Meg Cabot, which is about the characters from the legend of Arthur being reincarnated as teenagers. It ties into the musical "Camelot"
20.4 The Plot Line Thickens
I like movies where the characters have crazy overnight adventures that take them in many unexpected directions, like Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, Superbad, the Hangover, etc. I read Rose Sees Red by Cecil Castelluci which also follows this plotline...The main character is a young ballet dancer who has lived next to the daughter of a Soviet ambassador for years, and finally meets her when her family is about to move back. The story takes place during the Cold War. When the main character takes the Soviet girl into the city for an ice cream, she learns that the girl wants to have some "american" experiences before she has to go home, so they evade the body guards watching her and go to a party on the steps of the Met. From there the night goes all over...they end up at the Russian Tea Room, Riding Staten Island ferry, sleeping over at a new friend's house, and finally at a peace rally the next morning.

5.5 - Take Me Out to the Ball Game
I read The Boys of October : How the 1975 Boston Red Sox Embodied Baseball's Ideals--and Restored Our Spirits.
What a fun book! I lived in Boston in 1975, and was a die hard Red Sox fan. Even though they couldn't pull out that last game, I still think it was the best World Series ever - and I can't imagine another game to even come close to the 6th game! This book brought it all back.
10.8 WHAT A WAY TO MAKE A LIVING
I read Tell Me Where It Hurts: A Day of Humor, Healing and Hope in My Life as an Animal Surgeon
Another interesting and enjoyable book (and one which I doubt I ever would have read if not for this challenge!)

I learned a lot about raising goats and what to do with their extra milk (soap!).
I also rolled a 5 and read Imperfect Endings: A Memoir by Zoe FitzGerald Carter, which is about a daughter who helps her mother commit assisted suicide after suffering from several debilitating diseases for many years.
