Heidi (heidi422) 5.5 Dropping Names: Audrey Niffenegger
Her Fearful Symmetry
This was a nice read, but it was no where as good as the Time Traveler's wife.

5.8 Take a Walk on Wall Street

Best books on Lincoln
Lincoln's Melancholy
I learned a lot about Lincoln, but even more about the historical context of depression. It was fascinating.

5.9 Get Caught Reading
Helen Hath No Fury
Quick fun read. I think I'll read the other Amanda Pepper Mysteries.

15.1 Wedding Bells

Something borrowed and old
All Creatures Great and Small
I loved this book! It was very humorous and interesting. I will read the others in the series. I borrowed it from a co-worker and he's given me the rest.

Something Blue and new
The Lovely Bones
This was one of the top 5 worst books I've ever read. Horrible writing, weak plot, and down right silly situations.

25.9 Swimsuit Addition: Victorian
The Portrait of a Lady
I enjoyed this book because Henry James is a master storyteller. "Our heroine" was well developed and he had some superb turns of phrase that I absolutely loved.
"Changing the form of one's mission's almost as difficult as changing the shape of one's nose; there they are, each, in the middle of one's face and one's character-one has to begin too far back." Madam Merle pg 327

Dracula
Creepy. I kept wondering how it would have struck me if I had no knowledge of the mythology of vampires.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

15.4 - Learn Your Numbers - My number is 1
The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell (also a 1)
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (The main character, Katniss, is independent and a leader in the rebellion, characteristics matching with a 1.)

25.5 - Share the Summer Love
YA Chick Lit: This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen
I love this genre for the times I want something comfortable and easy to read. Sometimes, I just want people to end up happy, even if the going is tough. This book is a typical Sarah Dessen book - the characters are interesting and well-developed, engaging and likable (for the most part). I'm happy with the way it ended, even if it was mostly expected.

Non-Fiction: Word Freak: Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius, and Obsession in the World of Competitive Scrabble Players by Stefan Fatsis
I love this genre for the reality it brings to my reading. After reading a non-fiction book, I truly feel like I've learned something. This book in particular made me feel like if I really wanted to, I could become a Scrabble master. Do I want to? No, not really. But I do want to go play Scrabble with my friends, and wow them with my newly-found awesome skills. I found this book to be fascinating and engaging, with lively characters that are too real and funny and quirky to be made up. It is one of my favorite books of the summer.

25.9 - Swim Suit Edition - C. Tankini (850 pages of books published in last 5 years)
Letters to Juliet by Lise Friedman - 176 pages, published 2006
An Education by Lynn Barber - 192 pages, published 2009
The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall - 602 pages, published 2010 ** This one qualifies for a BIG BOOK ticket (500+)

30.3 - Ode to Illinois
A. Lincoln bio - Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin ** This one qualifies for a BIG BOOK ticket (750+) as it is 944 pages
B. Set in Chicago - The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson

I will be passing on Peter Pan to my nephew who just turned 8 in August. He is not the biggest reader so I am hoping he might be inspired to read it (or at least have it read to him) due to the main character being a young boy who goes on many adventures.

message 2805: by Petra (new)

Petra I completed Task 50.1 (Tarot) by reading:

(Past) The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole (from the Read list of Sam and Melitta)

(Present) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (from the Currently Reading list of Bluemoon on Aug. 1st)

(Future) Daughter by Ishmel Moore (from the To Read list of Kathy G)

In "Castle of Otranto", I thought I would be reading a Gothic Horror story. Despite ghosts and spectres, it's really an overdramatic, comical story of a stolen title and the righting of a wrong. Everything in this story falls into place neatly and without effort. Interesting, fun to read and humorous but also very drawn out, despite it being under 200 pages.

I was a bit disappointed in "Pride and Prejudice". I liked the first part and the ending. Both sections were humerous, warm and full of Victorian style, wit and lovable characters. However, the middle 200 pages or so were frivolous and unentertaining. My least favorite part was when the strong, self-aware Lizzy starts to fall in love with Mr. Darcy while visiting his family home and picturing herself as the mistress of the home. Somehow, that "I want the house, prestige and riches" attitude took away from the love story (for me). It was unlike Lizzy.

"Daughter" was a heartbreaking YA book about a young teenage girl who's mother is suffering from alzheimer's disease. The story centers around her becoming aware of the situation and learning to cope with it and learning to realize that, eventually, she'll lose her mother to lost memory. Sad.

That brings my total Points to 365. I have one more task left in me, I'm sure.

Whose Body? by Dorothy L. Sayers

My all-time favorite genre is mystery. Figuring out the hows and whys really appeals to the scientist in me. Unfortunately, this book is not a great example of the genre. There's little to no character development and even for a much older (1925) book it just doesn't do it for me. This was a surprise since Agatha Christie is one of my all-time favorite authors. I may or may give Sayers' books another try.

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde

Another favorite genre is sci-fi/fantasy. I just love the possibilities of plot and character when an author isn't limited to "this" world. This was a really fun example of the genre. The characters and plot were all extremely original. I would love to read more books in the series.

20.9 Indies Choice Book Awards

(2007, Honor Book)
The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson
5 stars

I found this book enchanting. Bryson blends just the right amount of family follies, nostalgic observations, and serious history into his writing. During the entire read, I kept thinking that the narrator from the movie "A Christmas Story" would be perfect candidate for reading the audio edition of this book.

Independent Spirit Awards:
(1991, Best Feature)

The Grifters

I can't believe I have never seen this movie. I'm an 80s girl, so I grew up watching John Cusak. I recently tried to read the book, but for some reason, it didn't catch my attention. However, I really like the movie. The acting was superb and the tale was dark, just the elements I love in a flick.

Sorry-forgot the review part!

A-Chick Lit. I read Get Lucky by Katherine Center(A GoodReads Author). It is the story of 2 sisters-one who is single and has a career in advertising in NYC. She loses her job after she forwards an inappropriate e-mail to all her co-workers. She has spent her whole life working, and doesn't know what to do with herself. So she goes back home to Texas where her sister and dad live (their mom passed away when they were kids). The sister is married and trying to have a family, but is unable. Long story short-one sister becomes the surrogate for the other, and there is all kinds of family drama.

I like Chick-lit most of the time, when I am ready for a light read and don't feel like I have to concentrate on every single word. But I do like a little depth to the characters, not just fluff (although sometimes just fluff is okay too!) and I think this book does a good job of that.

B. Literary Fiction. I read The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver. This is sort of a coming of age story-a young woman from rural Kentucky decides that she wants more than just getting married and pregnant/having kids, so she takes off with her mother's blessing to find her life. Along the way, in her old, beat-up VW bug, she "acquires" a child, and then ends up in Arizona. The story has a back plot regarding illegal immigration, and alot of interesting characters.

This book is my favorite kind of literary fiction-the story was easy to read, but had some meat to it and to the characters. It sort of had a message to it, even if you don't agree with it, and to me, that is what literary fiction is. I want to explore people, places, and things, and be surprised.

Hope this works as a review/explanation of why I like these 2 types of books. I can read well, but can't write well at all!

20.6 List Maker

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

This isn't an unknown book by any stretch, but I think it qualifies as a must read. I was going to do another book for this task and started it, but I then realized that I just "had to read" Catching Fire before Mockingjay came out. The second book moves the story to a whole new level and is one of the better middle books of a trilogy I have ever read. If you read Hunger Games for the group read and plan to read Mockingjay for the fall, then it is even more a "must-read"!

Country I've not visited and would like to is Italy. For this I read A Thread of Grace. I'd prefer traveling there today than during WWII as this book is set.

Translated Book is Every Man Dies Alone which was originally written in German - another WWII book.

50.1 Let the Tarot Decide

Past on Tommy's Bookshelf was A Gate at the Stairs. I wouldn't recommend this book.

Present on Kathleen's Currently Reading List was The Girl Who Played with Fire

Future on Crystal's To Read Shelf was Quicksand which was one of the worst books I've ever read. Some weird cross between mystery, romance, supernatural. The characters were unbelievable and unlikeable and some of the dialogue was unintentionally hilarious. Example: After Eve the main character is shot while being stalked by a child killer in a swamp (and the killer is still on the loose)her boyfriend says "I know I'm wet but can I hold you?" Huh???

20.6 Must read or not...
I Am the Messenger by by Markus Zusak

I thought this book was very well written and is definitely a must read. In the US it is classified as YA, but I think it is a book for adults (in Australia, where it was originally published, it is considered adult. The writing in this book is beautiful. I also really liked all the secondary characters, especially the coffee-drinking dog, named Doorman. It was a bit predictable though, even though it was supposed to be a big mystery. I did enjoy reading it none-the-less.

25.5 two favorite genres
My Name Is Memory by Ann Brashares
Rebel Angels by Libba Bray

Genre 1: Chick-lit. I like this genre in summer, because the books tend to be really light quick reads with a compelling story. The writing is not great but it's ok.

Genre 1: YA. Again I like this genre because the stories are good. Usually there are moral dilemmas and real-life problems as well as a good ending.

Review of My Name is Memory: I liked the premise. I thought this book though gave too much background info. In fact the whole book was background and stuff only started happening in the last 1/4. Also I thought it was inspired a bit too much by The Time Traveler's Wife, there were many points in the book where it sounded very similar!

Review of Rebel Angels: This book was so good! Even better then the last one! So much has happened! I don't want to spoil it (or the first book) to anyone. But all I have to say is very much looking forward to the reading the last book!

The Other Family: A Novel (2010) by Joanna Trollope (Paperback, 336 pages)

A. A book that has the word Family in the title
I read The Other Family: A Novel 5 *'s. A man dies unexpectedly, leaving two families behing. How do they deal with his death ... and each other? I found this to be a real pageturner, so I gave it 5 *s, even though my sympathies were with different characters than Joanna Trollope's sympathies.

B. Tell the group at least one thing that you love about your own family or the family member from your title.
I like the way my family genuinely rejoices when someone achieves one of their goals. (She got the job! He got the scholarship! A different she: asked to the prom --- by the CUTE boy!)

Mockingjay- by Suzanne Collins from thecompulsivereader.com

My review:
Hmm. Ok, I liked it. But I wasn't as enthralled with this installment of the trilogy. Too much action, too many unbelievable injuries, and too much time passing quickly. I liked the ending, meaning the last 4 pages; however, a lot of the middle was sort or "blah, blah, blah" too me. It makes me sad to say it, because I loved all the characters in the first two books. They were just not the same in this last one. I will miss them though. Overall, the trilogy was great.

I read The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester. The title describes me because I'm a professor -- and I have also been accused of being a madwoman at times.

There are two characters central to the story: one is the original editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, James Murray. I love words, and putting together puzzles, and taking on tasks that are too big to handle, so in that way I saw myself in Murray. I would never have his patience, or the ability to work with someone for years without asking a single personal question – to the extent Murray was standoffish, he definitely wasn’t like me!

25.5 - Favorite Genres -
1) Teach Like a Champion: 49 Techniques that Put Students on the Path to College from the genre of books about teaching. As an (incredibly nerdy) teacher I read a LOT of books about teaching and education. What I like about this genre is getting new ideas for my classroom, and feeling part of a community of educators through books.

and

2) Jazmin's Notebook by Nikki Grimes. I would consider this to be YA poetic fiction. What I like about this genre is the beauty of the language and the way a story can be told using poetry and prose together.

25.5 - Helen's Task - Share the Summer Love

A. One of my favorite genres is fantasy/science fiction. I enjoy it because it allows the author to explore ideas without the constraints of “real life” – only limited by his/her imagination. And, for me, it’s an escape from real life.

For this, I read Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.
I don’t want to say much, because I don’t want any spoilers. I was just as compelled to read this as the previous two in the trilogy, without being able to stop. In some ways, I didn’t find the plot as compelling as the first two books, but I also thought it was necessary – things had to be brought to a conclusion.

A second favorite genre of mine is mysteries, and one of my favorite subsets of mysteries is the “wrongly accused” type. I think it feels somewhat “safe” because no matter how bleak things look for the main character, you figure they’re going to pull through and clear their name and find the real bad guy by the end of the book. That’s a particularly safe bet when it’s the middle book in a trilogy – so I read The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson

I really enjoyed it – this series (and this book) is a little more brutal than I normally read, but I’m completely fascinated with the characters and, for a long book, it just flew along. I particularly liked the way more and more people became convinced that there was more going on than just a psychotic girl killing people, and the way that at least some of the police were portrayed as thinking people, who didn’t just want to take someone, anyone, down for the murders.
