5.4 - Lesser Known Awards
The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis (Hardcover, 266 pages)
Task:
There are a lot of lesser known book awards out there and lucky for us Goodreads has a list of them. Read a book found on the list of winners and nominees for an award you had previously never heard of.
I read The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine. 4 stars. A very clear explanation of what happened with Wall Street and sup-prime mortgages and credit default swaps. This book was on the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Nominee for Long List (2010). I have never heard of this award before doing this task.

50.1: Let the Tarot Decide
I read books on my friend Rebecca MA's shelves
Past: I read The Black Circle by Patrick Carman. Rebecca read this earlier in the year. It is on her Read shelf.
Present: I read Mr. Monk in Outer Space by Lee Goldberg. We both read this book together, it was on our currently reading shelves at the same time.
Future: I read The Alchemyst by Michael Scott. I recommended this book to Rebecca, but she has not read it yet. It is on her TBR shelf.
Not including the task I have to fix, I should have 110 points now.

15.9 - “He Who Knows Others Is Wise. He Who Knows Himself Is Enlightened.” - Lao Tzu
A. Crazy Love by Tara Janzen ★ ★ ★
B. These are the two things my husband calls me, depending on mood swings - the main female character is a “wild & free” type who relishes exceeding the expectations of others. While I don’t consider myself wild, I do like surprising others with my capabilities.

Correction for post 2630
Although I understand the 1970 rule as a classic, it would have been nice if that rule be put in the task itself. I read Falling Up when I was a kid. I consider it a classic. I will read another book for that task.
Instead I will post the following:
5.10: If you cannot enjoy reading a book over and over...
I read Falling Up by Shel Silverstein several times growing up and I read it again yesterday.

I would really like to go to Morocco, so I read Moroccan Traffic and One Hundred Years of Solitude which was originally written in Spanish.

Mostly Happy by Pam Bustin
The title of this book describes me well, but the character gets to that place in her life on a much tougher road than I had to travel. Bean suffers abuse and the only way she can save herself is to separate from her family and find her own independent way. My mom suffered from emotional illness and I, too, chose to remove myself from the situation as a young adult and find out who I was and build my self confidence. I fall back into poor self image sometimes, but I am definitely Mostly Happy!

So I was wrong -- some of the books I've read actually fit in here -- hooray!
Task 15.2 (Stars and Stripes) I read:
A. Gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson (state name in title), and
B. Kissing in Manhattan by David Shickler (takes place in NY, one of the original 13 colonies)
Task 25.7 (Passionate About): I am passionate about the law, and specifically, books about lawyers. Please don't judge me!!
A. Nonfiction: I read One L: The Turbulent True Story of a First Year at Harvard Law School by Scott Turow. This was especially interesting to read soon on the heels of reading The Paper Chase, which is the same "memoir of the first year of law school at Harvard", but several years apart.
B. Fiction: I read Anonymous Lawyer by Jeremy Blachman. I alternated between laughing hysterically and cringing with the realization that it . . . wasn't as fictionalized as one might have hoped.

I live in Montrouge, France, which is a city nearby Paris : what I'd like to change is that I wish we had the subway on my city in order to be able to go easily in Paris (and therefore have less journey time to go to work, as I'm pregnany I wish I wouldn't have 2 hours of transportations per day) ; hopefully, the subway is coming in 2012 so I just have to wait.

Repost of 2639 before I get caught on it!
15.1 Wedding Bells Are Ringing
New/Blue- Phantom Tollbooth by Norman Juster
This book has been on my TBR list for years. Loved it! My kids told me to read it and I am passing it on to my Mother In Law because we share so many "word" stories and jokes. The Phantom Tollbooth
Old/Borrowed- I was born in 1955 so I chose The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. This is hard boiled detective, the stuff my dad loved. I am so excited because as much as I watch TCM I have avoided this Bogart/Bacall movie till I read the book and it will be on this weekend (fitting as I read Bacall's bio earlier this challenge!) The Big Sleep
I forgot to add that I borrowed this from the library. (I guess I should stop doing posts so late at night after I am done reading!

15.10 (family name in title) Prodigal Son. I'll be looking for the other ones in this series--already have book number 2.
I love my family--espeically when I get together with my mom and step-dad to play cards or dominoes and when we sit on the back porch just talking until the wee hours of the morning (or until 10:00 which is when my mom and I usually fall asleep). I feel very lucky to have my immediate and my extended family in my life.

10.4 - Unzipped by Lois Greiman (I rolled 3-6-2)
25.1 - An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon (set during American Revolution and several characters are in the military) AND Push by Sapphire (has a red cover)

25.3 - The Owl Killers by Karen Maitland (set in England) AND The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (translated from French)
Requesting Big Book Tickets for-
The Owl Killers - 502 pages - although GR is off and only says 480 for my version.
An Echo in the Bone - 820 pages
The Count of Monte Cristo - 1,000+ pages - I read it on project Gutenberg and my Word document had 1,700 pages but every bound version is well over 1,000.

Read: The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera
Blog: http://madbibliophile.wordpress.com/2...
Review: I'm not quite sure how I feel about this one yet. Kundera just seems to jump all over the place, one minute there's a plot, the next is just philosophy. Plus, the only time I felt any stirring of emotion, it was all due to the dog. Granted, Kundera is a wonderful user of the language, but I couldn't stay interested. (3 Stars)

My signature dish (and really only dish since I don't cook) is the ultimate grilled cheese. I have posted the recipe in the recipe thread. This is something that I didn't create, but am known for even at work. We have grilled cheese potlucks and cook them on Foreman grills. It is not a sandwich that is good for you and it is hard to mess with a classic that is the grilled cheese, but it really does taste better than a regular grilled cheese and that is why it is a stand out recipe.
I read I Am the Cheese for part A. I read Chew On This: Everything You Don't Want to Know About Fast Food for part C. I don't think I'll be eating at a fast food restaurant in the near future.

Wendy, for 15.8- Double, Double which editions of and did you read? The covers of the editions s..."
I chose Preston- The Cemetery and Peters -The Hippopotamus Pool
They looked and still look similar to me. The coloring and the central antiquities theme in the middle.. Come on- this is too much. Send it out to another person to referee. I picked the book specifically because I thought it was very similar. I'm not rereading a third book for this task. The last time they said I couldn't use the same author when the task did not specify that for the similar covers part of the task, so I specifically changed to this book. The editions are correct, maybe my artistry isn't as finally honed as yours, but I stick by my choice. This is starting not to be fun any more. :-(
