20.6 - Nicole CA's Task - Must-Read lists abound. Let's create our own! Read a book that is at least 300 pages and tell us whether or not it is a must-read.

I read Gang Leader for a Day: A Rogue Sociologist Takes to the Streets by Sudhir Alladi Venkatesh (320 pages). This book is definitely a must-read for EVERYONE. It gives you a unique first-hand perspective of daily life in a housing project and a crack-dealing street gang and it's leader. Many of the situations the sociologist writes about are highly unexpected and surprising, from the intricate underground economy to the dedicated way these people stick together and help each other over the years. It sparked my interest in local housing projects in my city and what has become of the residents post-gentrification. I hope all of my friends on Goodreads will check it out. I thought it was one amazing and illuminating book. +20

SARA E. Posting some more tasks. 350

5.3 - I read Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr, which was a bit meh. I think I just can't get into fantasy fiction that deals with fairies.

5.7 - I read How To Steal A Car by Pete Hautman How to Steal a Car by Pete Hautman, which features a car and cop cars on the cover. A really cute and fun read about a teen who starts stealing cars out of sheer boredom.

5.9 - I read Linger by Maggie Steifvater in the library. It was OK. A werewolf book.

10.4 - I rolled 124. So, I read Psyche in a Dress by Francesca Lia Block, which is 128 pages. Couldn't really get into this one at all. It is sort of a Greek mythology/modern fiction/urban fantasy/some poems. Meh. Not my cup of tea.

15.2- For the first part of the challenge, I read Gods in Alabama by Joshilynn Jackson. LOVED IT. Can't wait to read Backseat Saints.

For the second part of the challenge I read Savor the Moment by Nora Roberts, which is set in Connecticut. Very cute read, part of the bride quartet, about four friends who run a wedding planning/events business, a really cute and fun romance series. Luv Nora.

30.1 - I was born on a Monday in September. For September, I had to read a book about everyday objects, so I read Bubble Gum and Hula Hoops: the origins of objects in our everyday lives by Harry Oliver. Loved this book. It gives the origins of everything from toilets to paper clips.

For the book in verse I decided to finally read an Ellen Hopkins book. For those of you who are not familiar with her, she is a VERY popular YA author who does ginormous books in verse about really controversial topics. I decided to read Crank, which is about a teen girls descent into the world of abusing crystal meth. I was surprised that I actually enjoyed this book, and I think that it was very realistic, esp. considering that the main character is based on Hopkin's daughter, who struggled/is still struggling with an addiction to "the Monster." Never thought I would be able to get into a book written in verse, but I actually appreciated this one.

Previous score: 350
Current score: 420

Since you liked Crank, try the sequels. There's one out already (Glass) and a third one to be released at the end of September (?). Burned is my favorite of her books, though. I'm glad you found good books for my task! ^_^

10.10 - The five-star book was The Hole We're In by Gabrielle Zevin, I chose Jennifer Wolfe, and decided to read Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, which I LOVED.

That should bring my score up to 430. Woo Hoo!

message 2664: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 116 comments 10.3 The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks from Eileen Goode's profile
10.6 Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town
15.5 Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner and Pearl from her top ten list
15.7 Six Suspects
Part B - I think there needs to be a greater focus on education in America, and that should not be a place where budget cuts happen, so I volunteer in a couple of programs that promote literacy - one with kids and another to tutor adults
25.5 I seem to have a default favorite genre of historical fiction, most specifically that around WWII. At first it seemed coincidence that I kept picking up books of that era, and now I'm interested in all the different ways it affected people even those that weren't directly involved with the war, such as in Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
Lately my second favorite genre is fantasy with sci-fi leanings. This is a new one for me, but I'm reading a bunch of it and I really enjoy Orson Scott Card so I read Speaker for the Dead

A. After the Rice Not so great 2*
B. The Recipe Club: A Tale of Food and Friendship Also not great. I didn't really like any of the characters in either of these books. Luckily, they were pretty fast reads.

My dish: Salsa beans and RICE from Desperation Dinners. It's a great dish for a potluck because the recipe makes a huge batch and if I just make it for home we eat leftovers for about two weeks. It stands out because it seems really complicated, but it is super simple. It is also a great dip if you leave out the rice, so it is good for standing around the table and munching.

I didn't see the movie, but I heard so much about it that I wanted to read the book. I liked it - it had a lot to think about with the clash between traditional ways and more modern ways - not just the question of whether a girl can be the spiritual leader of the group, but about the younger people who go to other countries, the relationship between people and nature, etc.

It's short, but there's a lot to think about in it!

5.7 - MODE OF TRANSPORTATION Earthquake at Dawn which has a horse drawn carriage listing into a crack in the street. This book is about a photographer who is supposed to be leaving San Francisco the afternoon after the earthquake took place. 30.4 - SCENE OF THE CRIME - Crisis which is a medical thriller about a doctor that gets sued for malpractice after a pt dies. There is a twist at the end but I think it could have been pulled off better (3*). And The Keepsake which is another medical/forensic thriller about a medical examiner and a cop that are researching a series of murders after a mummy , which is thought to be 2000 years old is discovered to have a bullet in her. This leads both on a search for a killer. There is an autopsy and alot of forensic work done. (3*)

Juniper (jooniperd) Hello!

I have the following tasks completed:

10.6 - Stand Up For Your Rights
The Beauty of Humanity Movement by Camilla Gibb. In this novel, set in Vietnam, much of the plot centres on the oppression of artists and writers under communist rule in the 1950's (hence the title as it was this 'Beauty of Humanity Movement' group of people who were terrorized and sent to re-education camps). The main character was part of a group that defied the government during this time to bring literature and art to the population of Hanoi. his survival, in spite of the government, is remarkable.

25.9 - Donna Jo's Swimsuit Edition

10.10 Great Minds The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University by Kevin Roose

25.5 Summer Love - A) Pleasure for Pleasure by Eloisa James (genre historical romance)
B)The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (young adult/fantasy)

A review: The one thing I don't like about this series is that sometimes the main focus is lost. The main couple should always be that. I loved the scenes with Josie and Mayne early on and felt the balance was alright overall, but it could have been better. I love historical romance because it takes me away from the modernity of today to a place where romance exists as a driving force and things end up happily.

B review: Reading it as a 23 year old, it's just alright. I enjoyed how the author modernizes the greek myths and guessing who the gods and monsters were before we were told, but I just couldn't get into it. I like the genre (fantasy) because it is full of adventure and challenges!

Leigh Ann (leighannflyingonsilverwings) 15.9 - “He Who Knows Others Is Wise. He Who Knows Himself Is Enlightened.” - Lao Tzu ~ Fearless

This was a book about a little girl who is taken from her mother and sent to live in what is called "The Institute". Outsiders believe it to be a school, but really it's a prison. The girls are not called by their names, but are given numbers. Consequently they make up nicknames for each other in correspondence to their personality. The hero of the story is called Little Fearless because she is not afraid to do what she believes is right, no matter the consequences. This was an enjoyable YA book with alot of life lessons.

Was the hero of the story like me? I like to think that I am fearless in situations that call for it, but this little girl went above and beyond, not for herself, but for her friends. They called her the bravest and the best of them. No, I don't think I'm quite THAT fearless, but she inspires me.

20.1 - The Most Improved Player - Deirdre's Task - Sweltering Summer Days

I read Half Magic by Edward Eager

My favorite ice cream is Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked - chocolate and vanilla, with chocolate chip cookie dough and fudge brownies. WAY too good, and I’ve eaten way too much of it during the challenge – you know, just to make sure that it’s still my favorite....

25.8 - Sandy's Task - Once Upon A Time…

I read The Sleeping Beauty by Mercedes Lackey (345 pages) and The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling (107 pages).

25.6 Summer Lovin'
As I don't like summer, there are not many songs I like that remind me of summer. However, a British group called Prelude brought out a summer album called 'Owl Creek Incident' that had some nice songs that made me think of the pleasanter aspects of summer. Included in that album was a song called Amsterdam, so I read
