1. In the 1930s, Noah McVicker of Kutol Products, a Cincinnati based soap manufacturer, invented a putty to clean coal residue off of wallpaper at the request of Kroger Grocery.
2. In 1955, Kay Zufall, a nursery school teacher, saw kids using the wallpaper cleaning putty to make art projects. She convinced her brother-in-law, Joe McVicker, to turn it into a toy.
3. In 1956, The McVickers founded Rainbow Craft Company to make and sell Play-Doh.
4. Woodward & Lathrop, a Washington D.C. department store, was the first to sell Play-Doh.
5. Macy's of New York and Marshall Field's of Chicago originally sold Play-Doh in a package of 3, 7 oz. cans.
6. In 1957, Play-Doh ads aired on Captain Kangaroo, Ding Dong Room, and Romper Room spreading Play-Doh's popularity across the nation.
