A woman named Maria Gomez is murdered in Miami, apparently by her husband—who'd been presumed dead, slain by a crime boss. FBI agent Brett Cody can't believe it; dead or alive, the man had loved his wife. He also can't help feeling guilty, since he was responsible for protecting Miguel and Maria Gomez.
A few miles away, Lara Mayhew has just begun working at a dolphin research facility. She loves her new job—until a dolphin brings her something unexpected from the deep. A human hand. More body parts show up, and when Brett looks into the situation, he discovers that the dismembered corpse is Miguel's.
Soon, rumors of crazed zombies abound in the Miami media, and the Krewe of Hunters, an elite FBI unit of paranormal investigators, is called in. Brett and Lara find themselves working with the Krewe—and working closely together. An elderly crime boss who's losing his memory seems to be key to solving this case, but…there's no motive. Unless Brett and Lara can uncover one in the Miami underworld. And that means they have to protect themselves. And each other.

The Forgotten by Heather Graham Krewe of Hunters series #16. Paranormal romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone. Lara, Matt and Meg are from book #15. FBI Agent Brett Cody doesn’t believe that Miguel Gomez killed his wife, Maria. First, the man is dead. Second, Miguel loved his wife unconditionally and would never have harmed her. Then pieces of Miguel are discovered and questions have to be directed to the funeral parlor and cemetery. Another death and rumors of zombies start. Lara Mathew works at a dolphin research facility in Florida and is appalled when one of the dolphins drops a finger in her hand. But she’s analytical and is soon working with Brett, and the Krewe to figure out how a dead man can still be walking.
Dolphins, ghosts, and zombies in Florida. Of course it’s Florida. I liked that Lara was able to live in the prior book. She’s even stronger in this book, able to handle not only the macabre deaths, but the paranormal as well. I always expect ghosts in this series but never expected zombies. The dolphins were more than welcome. On to the next ghost.
Have you ever gotten stuck in a book series and each time a new installment comes out, you have to grab it right away? Even though you know that every book in the series follows the same pattern? You know there will be a happy ending, boy gets girl or vice versa, and the mystery is solved, but you still keep reading? The Krewe of Hunters books are that series for me. Now, it might seem from what I wrote above that these books may not be good but that is not the case at all. I actually love them!
For those who have never read a book in this series, there are a few things to know. First, all of the books follow a specialized unit of the FBI called the Krewe of Hunters, who investigate cases that have an element of the strange or paranormal. Each member of the Krewe has an ability that lends to the solving of these cases and new members are being added to the group all the time. So, even though new characters are the focus in each new installment, the original characters are almost always play a role in the stories as well. Second, if you haven't figured it out already, every book in the series has a paranormal element to it. While they do follow a basic crime-solving mystery format, most of the books have a mild horror element to them and almost always involve the ghosts of the dead helping to lead the way. Some of them also have a historical element to them as well, which is an added bonus for me. Finally, the two main characters always become involved with one another about midway through the story so there is definitely some romance as well. Usually, the books are in sets of three but almost any of them can be read as a stand alone.
These are fairly quick, fun reads and perfect if you need a book for the beach or a weekend getaway. I love to read them in between deeper books because I know I can count on Heather Graham to give me a spooky story that won't disappoint. The next Krewe of Hunters book comes out in September and I will await it as patiently as possible.
Krewe of Hunters (team) are researching clues of female body parts brought up by "Cocoa" the Dolphin (Lara Mayhew is now working at dolphin research facility). It was difficult to follow the clues in determining the murderer. In addition, the FBI agent Brett Cody was protecting Miguel and Maria Gomez - Maria Gomez is found dead and the murderer must be found. The book did not flow as smooth as desired.
I found this book to be very entertaining but not really suspenseful. Never once was I actually concerned about the characters. I guess I just expected them to sail through all of the problems without a scratch. I'm not sure why I felt that way but I did. Maybe I wasn't really connecting with them? Unsure. Yet it's not a bad story at all. In fact it was fun to read and the writing, the descriptions are top notch. I could almost see hot tropical Florida. And I liked Cocoa the dolphin.
The plot revolves around someone dumping bodies into the water near where they keep dolphins and somehow Lara gets involved. Ok, she finds a finger. Cocoa gives it to her. And from there the FBI gets involved. Then things get worse. But who did it? And why?
I really didn't try to guess who the killer was. I was pretty clueless. Normally I would try but I didn't.
This is the first book I have read by Heather Graham, the multiple award winning romantic suspense author. And honestly speaking, it left me cold.
The premise is intriguing enough...a woman is murdered by her husband who is supposed to have been killed by the mafia. Even as FBI agent Brett is investigating the case more such murders by 'dead men' are revealed and the media goes ballistic about 'zombie attacks'. Meanwhile, Lara who has just started working at Sea Life, a dolphin research facility, gets a shock when one of the dolphins brings up a human body part. There is a paranormal angle in it as both Brett and Lara begin to connect with the ghosts of the murdered woman (Maria) and her husband (Miguel). Being part of the Krewe of Hunters series, there are special agents who specialise in solving crimes with the help of ghosts. Apart from this there is an angle about medical research too.
While it is an easy enough read, there are too many characters (on both sides of the good vs evil divide). The paranormal angle isn't spooky enough. Besides it is a bit of a stretch to imagine that not only the Krewe Hunters but Brett and Lara too are able to easily communicate with ghosts. The writing does not create enough suspense nor is there much of a romance angle. It's unlikely that I will ever read any other book in this series.
Zombies! It seems the dead are back and killing those they love. Yep-this case was very intriguing and intense. Dolphins! I love these beautiful, intelligent creatures and we befriend one brilliant dolphin. A slow-burning romance in sunny Miami Florida filled with snark, witty banter and a little heat. Graham did an excellent job of making me fall for Brett and Lara. While the Krewe is called in (Matt and Meg), Brett is not actually Krewe. I cannot remember a previous book doing this, although we get plenty of paranormal woo-woo involving Lara and Brett. As I said before, all of these books work as standalone, and Graham does a great job of giving you enough back-story to characters from the previous book.
The Forgotten was an intense, different, and engaging installment in the Krewe of Hunters series.
Back to a "safe" choice, meaning a book I will enjoy with reliable characters and an easy to follow plot. Once again Graham delivers in this 16th installment of the Krewe of Hunters series. This series, and book, touch on a bit of every genre: action, mystery, paranormal, with always a dash of something special on the side. In this case, dolphins! The setting was at a research/sea part that featured dolphins, and I was into every cheesy moment. So, once again I picked this up knowing exactly what I was getting and wasn't disappointed in the slightest.
Another potato chip, because these books are like potato chips, you have read just one more. The stories are all different but you know the guilty will pay and love will win in the end and you get to “visit” a new place.
It was spooky, the mystery was so engrossing, there was some real tension with the romance, and as always I loved the setting. Most Krewe books end with the hero/heroine who isn’t already part of the FBI joining the agency/unit but this one didn’t stick to that and I loved it. Getting Matt and Meg back felt like visiting old friends, too. It was just such a great installment in what’s become my favorite series.
I would give this 2.5 stars. I have read earlier books in the series and really enjoyed them. This one left me wanting a little more development of the mystery and the paranormal was meh. A decent read but not my favorite.
Stars: 3.5 / 5 Recommendation: Yes, pick it up for a mystery involving paranormal elements, historical flair and the romantic side of the plot.
The Forgotten is the sixteenth book in the Krewe of Hunters series by Heather Graham and published in July of 2015. The plot is centered around Brett Cody - FBI Agent - and Lara Mayhew - working at the dolphin research facility. The plot is set in Miami, FL, 3 weeks after the events of the previous book, The Silenced.
This forms the second book in the third trilogy within the series - first book being the previous book The Silenced. Although not mentioned exclusively, I consider them as a trilogy as the characters kind of flow from one book to the next keeping the continuity. First trilogy consisted of the ninth book The Night is Watching; the tenth book The Night is Alive; the eleventh book The Night is Forever. Second trilogy consisted of the 12th book The Cursed, 13th book the Hexed and 14th book The Betrayed.
Krewe are a secret FBI unit with each member of the unit honing a particular psychic talent of their own, making them the paranormal investigating team. This unit was created to deal with murders having supernatural undertones and paranormal activities. Headed by paranormal investigator Adam Harrison, this elite unit is called on to solve cases linked to historical mystery involving legendary crime and serial killings, war events and hauntings. The Krewe are divided into three distinct groups. The first group is led by Jackson Crow, who is also the Assistant Director of the Krewe, and called as the original Krewe of Hunters; the second group is led by Texas Ranger Logan Raintree and called as the Texas Krewe; the third group is Yankee Krewe, based in NYC, overseen by Jackson Crow.
We met Lara Mayhew in the previous book, The Silenced. In essence, that plot was centrally focused on rescuing Lara. At the end of that plot, Heather Graham sends Lara Mayhew to Miami, FL to work at a dolphin research facility in Miami, FL. With her being such a strong psychic I wondered if Heather Graham would spin a story for her. Just as I suspected, she has the immediate book set for Lara Mayhew.
After going through a horrendous near-death experience, Lara Mayhew moves to Miami, FL to work at the Sea Life Center with dolphins and researching around them. And then one day one of her dolphins brings her back a human finger from the bottom of the lagoon she works at.
FBI Special Agent Brett Cody is assigned the murder of Maria Gomez, who was being protected by the agency, since her husband had turned informant against the local mafia and was killed in the process. Now body parts are being found all over the lagoon and Agent Cody and Lara have to work together to unravel this mystery.
This being a kind of sequel to the previous book, I would have expected FBI Special Agents Matt Bosworth and Meg Murray definitely to be involved. In this we see that Matt and Meg are engaged to be married soon. A bit more of FBI Special Agent Diego McCullough is shown making me believe he might become a primary character soon.
Heather Graham describes FBI Agent Diego McCullough as looking like Mandy Patinkin in the 1987 American romantic fantasy comedy film, The Princess Bride. I have seen this film and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, whenever I think of Mandy Patinkin, I remember him more as FBI agent Jason Gideon in the hit TV show Criminal Minds.
I see a pattern to Heather Graham's stories in the Harrison Investigations and Krewe of Hunters series, apart from the presence of ghosts and spirits. Usually the stories revolve around historical inferences, somehow connecting the past to the present either by way of characters or incidents and they involve hidden tunnels be it in cemetery or old houses or mortuaries. Always has one new pair of Krewe of Hunters or Harrison Investigations investigators. I wonder if Heather will add a third twist to the plot.
As always there is historical and paranormal references from past are given to the reader with artifacts, events and places. This time the tales revolve around zombies and voodoo with real facts - Mike the headless chicken (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_th...) in 1945, Miami Cannibal Attack in 2012 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_c...). And she also takes the readers into the world of big corporations doing scientific experiments on animals.
Somewhere around the 15th chapter, I think I guessed who the killer was. But again Heather Graham surprised with the twists making the killer altogether someone else than what as a reader I had anticipated.
This book again had the hard-card inserts where it gave reader an opportunity to either join a book club and win books, or buy a book and get a few free. It is just impressive to see them still. Yet, again there are so many grammatical and character errors seen in this edition. I wonder if whoever edits or proof-reads her books, is efficient enough.
A very good mingle of murder and mystery; past and present; zombies and voodoo; and above all romance and love. Another successful thriller in the series of books under Krewe of Hunters by Heather Graham that is an easy ready and still enjoyable. A tale that captures one easily till the end.
Spoiler Alerts:
1. Plot Reveals: a. Other characters we see in this plot, that have strong psychic and paranormal abilities: I am hoping Heather Graham will have a plot for them in subsequent books - The Medical Examiner, Dr. Phil Kinny; FBI Special Agent Diego McCullough; b. Brett Cody gets an offer to join Krewe of Hunters but he declines, with the option open to join further. I am still going to put him under Team One for now.
2. Sub Plots: a. In eleventh book, The Night Is Forever, Dustin Blake was part of an FBI team consisting of Grant Shelby, Cindy Greenstreet and Jerry Gunter. I am wondering why Heather Graham had mentioned their complete names as well as a brief intro, albeit as part of the conversation. Will they resurface in future plots is something we have to wait and see. b. Dustin Blake has a sister Rayna Blake who is a Nashville sensation - a country music singer. I wonder if Heather Graham will use her as a lead character in a future book. c. Katie O'Hara and David Beckett are two characters in The Cursed plot. And a history into their background paused me to think they might be characters from another of Heather Graham book. I was pretty sure they weren't from Krewe of Hunters or Harrison Investigation series. A little dig on google pointed me to Ghost Shadow, the first book in Bone Island Series by Heather Graham published in 2010. Having not yet read that series, I am curious if Hannah O'Brien or Liam Beckett, David's brother, appear in that book as well. d. Jane Everett and Sloan Trent were part of Team Two: Texas Krewe. But in The Betrayed, Heather mentions that they were going to be permanent members of the Yankee Krewe. Have to read the rest of the books to know if that is where she sends them.
3. Grammatical / Historical / Location / Character Errors: a. On Pg. 71, Line 12, it should be "…right about Grant…" b. On Pg. 76, Line 23, it should be "….that Miguel Gomez had…" c. On Pg. 166, Line 1, it should be "…you to arrange for us…" d. On Pg. 182, Line 9, it should be "…take water, though…" e. On Pg. 183, Line 9, it should be "…wound up being…" f. On Pg. 287, Line 2, it should be "…people no one would…"
"The Forgotten," the latest installment of Heather Graham's Krewe of Hunters series, brings us to Miami when a man comes home...and kills his wife. Agent Brett Cody, who'd known the dead man, takes the wife's murder to heart, and vows to find out the truth about why Maria Gomez was killed. Meanwhile, Lara Mayhew has come to a dolphin sanctuary in Miami for a new start. And her new life begins with a bang when one of the sanctuary's dolphins brings her a present: a dead man's finger. So begins a long, twisting road involving zombies, mob bosses, and marine animals. Oh my.
One of the things I love most about Graham's writing is out full-force in "The Forgotten." I love the way Graham immerses the story in the setting. Everything about the story is informed by the place, by the history, by the culture, which helps bring a bit of believability to the paranormal side of her stories. She brings that to Miami, and more specifically, Miami's Haitian population, and the history of Papa Doc and his alleged zombie army. Graham always makes me want to go on a history spiral, hitting up books and the internet to find out more and this is no different.
However, the rest of the book felt a bit flat. It didn't feel like a Krewe of Hunters book, and I don't know if it's because I haven't yet read the last book in the series (which is heavily connected to this one). However, the ghostly element just didn't feel there. There were a couple of perfunctory "Oh look, I'm talking to a ghost" scenes, but it felt like they were there because they were expected to be there and didn't add much to the story. Same for the romance. It felt like halfway through, Graham remembered "Oh, right. The love story. Here you go" and tossed it in there.
The book was still quite enjoyable, but it's not one that I'm going to pick up and reread again (unlike Sacred Evil, The Hexed, and The Betrayed). It's not one of Graham's strongest offerings, but it's a solid read.
I admit to being a trifle disappointed in this latest entry in the "Krewe of Hunters" series. It seems as though author Heather Graham was just in too much of a hurry to put zombies into her story and get in on the latest supernatural literary trend.
Lara Mayhew, who was in the previous book ("The Silenced") is the main character here. She's in Florida, working for Sea Life, a marine mammal sanctuary, as their PR liaison. One of the dolphins, Cocoa, has taken a particular liking to her ... and one day, brings Lara a human finger during a session of playing "fetch."
In the mean while, people who are already dead are being seen around town killing their loved ones -- and then turning up "really, truly dead" later. One of them shows himself to Lara as a ghost -- and that's why the FBI's special Krewe are brought into the mix. They are basically law enforcement ghostbusters. One of the FBI agents, Brett Cody, finds himself attracted to Lara -- and vice versa -- but only after the stereotypical "hate at first sight.'
And yes, zombies. With a plot lifted straight from the pages of "The Serpent and the Rainbow," someone is making zombies using tetrodotoxin (referenced in the book even by scientists as "puffer fish poison"). The reason isn't revealed until the end of the book.
Graham told, rather than showed, the passion and attraction between Brett and Lara, which cost the book half a star. A full star was taken off because I'm just as sick and tired of zombies as I was of vampires when they were the character du jour.
Even though I am not a big fan of paranormal genre, I have been intrigued by this series, and how the ghosts are communicating with the FBI agents, and helping out with the cases. With this story at first, the whole zombie attack was a bit much to me, but as the evidence is revealed, and more information comes forward, including medical evidence, of what really seemed to happen, it all got more fascinating by every page. The mystery is alluring, so many questions that need answers. The suspense side of the story mainly focuses on the investigations, and when the action hits, it is nail-biting, dangerous, and deadly. Brett and Lara has palpable connection. I liked the humor, understanding, acceptance, and passion they had for each other. It is unique, rare and captivating. Everything between them seemed to be so easy, natural, like two pieces of a whole finally getting together, and are the perfect match, it was just delightful. I enjoyed this story, it is different with the Krewe hunter aspect. The mystery, not so much who is behind it, but the reasons for it, kept me guessing. The fate of the 'forgotten' is heartbreaking, but the dolphins with their games and wisdom, as well as the romance and life long friendships gave a great balance to the gloomy murders ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
I read this book long time ago, for those wanting me to update with a review, this is a good stand alone book from Grahams Krewe of Hunters series, in it FBI Agent Cody finds he has a most unusual crime on his hands. A woman has been murdered in her own home by her husband. But the husband had been murdered weeks earlier in an explosion tied to a local crime boss., Meanwhile, Lara Mayhew is settling into a new job working with a dolphin research facility. When one of the dolphins brings Lara a human finger from the lagoon, Britt is called in. The finger, along with a number of other body parts, turns out to be the dead man accused of killing his wife., This book is full of drama, mystery and suspense with a bit of paranormal to say the least, it was a quick read, and one ya didn't want to put down.
I thought this series would eventually get old, but here I am on book 16! I really enjoyed this one. Heather Graham described Miami very well, and I liked the role that the dolphin research facility played in the plot. The crime itself involved a notorious crime ring and “zombies” killing their loved ones. Heather Graham also worked in some interesting information on Miami’s Haitian community.
This book was lighter on the paranormal elements - ghosts are present in the story at critical moments, but don’t play a strong role overall. Also, unlike in previous books, no other Krewe members show up to help Lara, Brett, Meg and Diego solve the mystery. But I still thought this Krewe installment was very creative and am happy to rate it a solid four stars.
I love Heather Graham and the Krewe Hunters. In the Forgotten, a dolphin is the real hero. The murders are gross and two FBI agents help solve the case. It is easy to get caught up in these murder mysteries. And of course there is always a happy love connection. I have six more of this series lined up to read.
Latest installment to the Krewe of Hunters series. This one provided much needed grit and roughness to Graham's enjoyable yet predictable writing. They cursed! Zombies and cadaver rescuing dolphins made for an interesting read. Looking forward to #17
Wow, just wow. This book was so terrible. To be fair, I normally don't read this genre, but still. Just awful. It felt like being trapped in the literary version of Scooby Doo. Not sure why I even finished reading it.
Not my favorite . Not as interesting. Not that interested in the main characters. One throw-away crazy. And the zombi idea should have been scary, but it was not.
Lara Mayhew is recovering well from the horrific living nightmare that had her the prisoner of a serial killer, locked naked in the darkness. She has left Washington DC and relocated to the Miami area where she has become the Public Relations Directors for a marine life facility. Her new best friend is Cocoa, one of the female dolphins at the facility. Cocoa has taken such a liking to her that the researchers have asked her to learn how to work with her. In their very first training session, during a game of fetch, Lara is horrified when Cocoa brings her a severed human finger.
Brett Cody is running on adrenaline after the murder of Maria Gomez. Especially once the prime suspect becomes Maria's very and truly loving, and very and truly dead, husband Miguel. The day after Maria's murder, Brett is at the Sea Life facility meeting Lara and Cocoa because the finger has been identified as Miguel's. Lara and Cocoa become involved in a deeper search for more body parts in the water surrounding the facility.
In the meantime, Lara's best friend, FBI agent and Krewe member, Meg Murray brings her partner Matt to Miami because she feels her friend needs protection. She's more convinced when yet another "dead" man commits murder.
Very often I find the formula for the Krewe a little tired. It is saved by Heather Graham's writing and world building. I enjoy her knowledge of history and her ability to make it real. This book shook up the formula a bit with a "zombie" storyline that was interesting and compelling.
But what makes this one stand out is the continued inclusion of Lara's friend Meg. While characters always continue to show up in later books, Meg and Matt were part of the story, as opposed to just background. It gave it a sense of connection and continuity that I really enjoyed.
The Forgotten by Heather Graham is the 16th adventure in this exciting Krewe Hunter series! I was thrilled to read this book. The cover was intriguing. The cast of memorable characters from previous books were included (which is always the best part) and new characters were introduced. In this story, I was in Florida exploring how the dead and recent dead victims came back alive. The scenes were vivid and full of risks. Every step the characters took, there was danger waiting for them to make a mistake. One wrong step or calculation and the good guys would be ending up along with the other victims. Danger was everywhere. It was dark. I was on the edge of my seat with this read. I couldn't fathom who the murder(s) were. So of the prime suspects were ruled out for various reasons. This made the guessing harder.
If you love the water as much as I do and interacting with animals this read is also for you! One of the main places were a dead man's body parts are found happen to be inside a dolphin's tank. This dolphin played a key role in helping the Krewe Hunters, FBI agents, and the local police catch the bad guys. One special woman whose past was as horrible as the gruesome murders is once again put into danger. Her life hangs in the air.
Once again, I was entertained by Heather Graham latest novel. I cannot get enough of this Krewe Hunter series! Each member has a unique flavor they add to the stories and to the series. Heather Graham made sure each person had something special to contribute to the newly formed FBI unit, The Krewe Hunters. This is one romantic suspense I highly recommend to all.
I bought this copy from Harlequin. This is my voluntary review.
Yes, this rating was a pleasant surprise. Heather Graham writes the Krewe of Hunters series with a formula. FBI Agents with a talent for paranormal abilities are drawn into a special unit that works on cases that cannot be resolved by the normal human intellect.
This book is my very favorite out of the first 16 novels in this series. Our team finds themselves in Miami Florida. It seems there is a problem with Zombies murdering members of their own family.
I am not a fan of zombie fiction, but this story has other tropes that tie the action together in a very interesting way. The story line that hooked me was the attachment one dolphin has on a new employee at a Florida research park that trains, rehabilitates, and studies the very intelligent dolphins. With an intelligence higher than most dogs, these mammals learn tricks and commands that allow them to help the humans with fetch commands.
This is the storyline that melted my heart. However, I was quite happy with them”zombie” part of the plot as well. (That is a sentence I never imagined I would write in my entire life!)
HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
NOTE: you can read these books out of order. But I think you might enjoy each book more if you read them in order. Do not try to binge read these books. Rather, use them as palate cleansers between other books. (Too much of a good thing can be boring!)
A huge improvement on the last couple of books. Lara is a familiar character, experienced and skilled in multiple ways that go acknowledged, which puts her on much more equal footing with Brett, especially since he is decidedly lacking in the same skills that Lara possesses. Brett comes across more as lacking in people skills, rather than the disrespectful asshole most male protagonists start out as. He respects Lara from the start. There's also an interesting dynamic created here, with neither Lara nor Brett initially belonging to the Krewe, that sets this book apart. There were enough hints and foreshadowing to guess the murderers through logic and not just "what character(s) that we've met have been neglected by the investigation?" .
The book is seeped in bizzarreness. Zombies, mad science, a crime-finding dolphin, all sorts of odd people and stories. Ghosts took a backseat to some seriously weird science.
There are still some issues, some predictable (awkward sex scenes, poor Lara getting damseled, again), others just bad science (like an ME claiming that we only use 10% of our brains and that our brains are just like computers). But in this case the positives outweigh the negatives.
