However, it also helps to have a grounding in the classics. You get a great cross-section of writing styles that way, as well as an understanding of what makes a classic.

Second, just write. Put it on the page, even if it's lousy. Don't edit as you go; that's for afterwards. You may discover that what you wrote is a hot mess, sure. Still, don't throw it away. Create a file on your computer to be the equivalent of the kitchen junk drawer. You never know what will come into your mind that will improve the original manuscript -- or what tidbit from it would be perfect in another tale.(less)

Thank you! My photographer friend picked it up at a garage sale for the princely sum of $10; we used it as a prop before it went on to its ultimate fate of being used in a kinetic sculpture.
