However, it also helps to have a grounding in the classics. You get a great cross-section of writing styles that way, as well as an understanding of what makes a classic.

Second, just write. Put it on the page, even if it's lousy. Don't edit as you go; that's for afterwards. You may discover that what you wrote is a hot mess, sure. Still, don't throw it away. Create a file on your computer to be the equivalent of the kitchen junk drawer. You never know what will come into your mind that will improve the original manuscript -- or what tidbit from it would be perfect in another tale.(less)

Welcome to the Pine Away Motel and Cabins Welcome to the Pine Away Motel and Cabins by Katarina Bivald
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have to admit, this book took a little time to find its footing. It begins with Henny Broek, resident of Pine Creek, Ore., being hit and killed by a truck while crossing the street. Then, the primary narrator is Henny’s ghost, trying to figure out what to do next.

Thank you! My photographer friend picked it up at a garage sale for the princely sum of $10; we used it as a prop before it went on to its ultimate fate of being used in a kinetic sculpture.
