"This was the book that started my love affair with the dystopian genre. And maybe indirectly influenced my decision to do a politics degree. I was only 12 years old when I first read it but I suddenly saw how politics could be taken and manipulated to tell one hell of a scary and convincing story. I'm a lot more well-read now but, back then, this was a game-changer. I started to think about things differently. I started to think about 2 + 2 = 5 and I wanted to read more books that explored the idea of control."- Emily May from Goodreads" See Review |

The New Penguin History of The World

""...or a similar such volume by a reputable publisher with the aim of over viewing the total history of the human race. I have no idea what advice can possibly be actionable for all eight billion people in the world, other than to encourage them to find out where they, their tribe, their nation, or their religion fits into the single, vast, human family."

Man's Search for Meaning
by
""While just like any other book it has garnered some criticism after its release... I think Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl is one of the most impactful existential narratives to ever be committed to text. It's a sobering reminder that normal people can be subjected to trauma beyond their comprehension and can also remain resilient despite unbelievable atrocity."-/u/dedbigfed
It isn't very long or an overly complicated read, but it 'is' a powerful book.-/u/_Miracle" |

The Handmaid’s Tale (The Handmaid's Tale, #1)
by
""I worked for a history professor throughout college and when the department was looking for a new hire, they asked me to sit in on some late round interviews. I was allowed to ask a question or two if I wanted and I asked the candidate this question. The answer I liked the best was a book I hadn’t read at the time, but I found it at the library the next week and read it for the first (of many) time. I’m going to steal that candidates answer. It feels even more important now than it was many many years ago when I was in college." -/u/onelittlechickadee"
