Hey, chicks can write, too!

Its true! When I think of most of my favorite novels, 90% of them were written by men. Well, here are some great books (fiction and nonfiction) that clearly proove that breasts don't inhibit the creative process.

My favorite writers are ALWAYS women. My husband enjoys men writers more and says women are too long winded but no one was was long winded as Tolstoy.

message 2: by Foxontherun (new)

Foxontherun I like more male writers than female ones, but that's mostly because I've been exposed to more male authors in my lifetime. I'm also not a huge fan of the Brontes and Jane Austen, which are sort of the classics in terms of female lit. So far, though, none of my least favorite female authors are on this list, which is good :)

Janet Evanovitch is fun reading--but not exactly on par with the likes of Carson McCullers, Simone de Beauvoir or Joan Didion.

But I like the variety so far.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I loathe Jane Austen (like Mark Twain I guess) and I like the Bronte's ok the least known one being my favorite. Carson McCullers is boring IMO and Simone may have done lots for the women's movement but is not FUN reading. I read for fun now. I have not read Joan Didion. Maybe I should create a list for FUN reading. I want to have a laugh now and again and read nothing depressing.

message 4: by Foxontherun (new)

Foxontherun True--don't get me wrong. I own all the Stephanie Plum series up until number 11. I just wish I could think of more "literature" by women that isn't from 100 years ago.

I also really dislike Toni Morrison, Annie Proulx and Zora Neale Hurston.

But I *do* love Dorothy Parker!

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Its a wonder any women were able to write back then as they were only supposed to keep house and have babies. (not much has changed but a little) I don't care for Annie Proulx either and so far have managed to avoid reading Toni Morrison. Goodreads has forced me to read many things in order to do the quiz but I try to read strictly for pleasure now.

My sister loves Dorothy Parker too and sends me cards, labels etc with Dorothy Parker quotes. What do you recommend?

message 6: by Foxontherun (new)

Foxontherun I would say either "The Portable Dorothy Parker" or "The Poetry and Short Stories of Dorothy Parker." Really any collection that has the short story "Th Phone Call" in it is worth the price and while she's known for her wit, some of her poetry and essays are very poignant.

She's my hero, either way.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, will see if I can get it from the library.

message 8: by Roshio (last edited Sep 29, 2011 01:32PM) (new)

Roshio yikes! did the name of the list have to have the word 'chicks' in it.

message 9: by Celia (new)

Celia George Eliot is my favorite female author. She isn't nearly as frilly as Austen or the Brontes and she put a lot of research into her books. I'm convinced she was a brilliant lady.

message 10: by Jodi (new)

Jodi The title and description for this list is just hideous. Condescending and misogynist. Ugh. Pls don't try and do feminism any favours! This is opposite of that.

Oh come on, can't you see the humor in it? :-) I could, which is why I've added heaps of excellent, sometimes even more or less forgotten, books written by women.

message 12: by Rosa (new)

Rosa Please. No one ever said they couldn't, not even Roald Dahl.

message 13: by BookLovingLady (last edited May 26, 2017 12:32AM) (new)

BookLovingLady Foxontherun wrote: "I also really dislike Toni Morrison..."

I like her work, but I'll grant you that unlike some literature, it takes me a lot of pages before I finally get into the story. Having read a book of hers for my American literature classes, I know though that I'm going to like her work, no matter if it takes me quite a while to get into it :-)

Annie Proulx and Zora Neale Hurston are still on my TBR list, so it's not possible for me to give an opinion on their work.

message 14: by Esther (new)

Esther This list is so embarrassing!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Why do you find it embarrassing?

message 16: by Esther (new)

Esther Because of course women can write. It's embarrassing that of the list's creator's favourite novels 90% are by men.
